  • An image segmentation approach based on the fuzzy worm searching and MIN-MAX clustering algorithm is proposed in this paper. This algorithm deals with fuzzy worm value and min-max node at a gross scene level, which investigates the edge information including fuzzy worm action and spatial relationship of the pixels as the parameters of its objective function. But the conventional segmentation methods for edge extraction generally need the mask information for the algebraic model, and take long run times at mask operation, whereas the proposed algorithm has single operation according to active searching of fuzzy worms. In addition, we also propose both genetic fuzzy worm searching and genetic min-max clustering using genetic algorithm to complete clustering and fuzzy searching on grey-histogram of image for the optimum solution, which can automatically determine the size of ranges and has both strong robust and speedy calculation. The simulation results showed that the proposed algorithm adaptively divided the quantized images in histogram region and performed single searching methods, significantly alleviating the increase of the computational load and the memory requirements.

  • This paper presents an approach for detecting and measuring human skin pigmentation. In the proposed scheme, we extract a skin area by a GMM-EM clustering based skin color model that is estimated from the statistical analysis of training images and remove tiny noises through the morphology processing. A skin area is decomposed into two components of hemoglobin and melanin by an independent component analysis (ICA) algorithm. Then, we calculate the intensities of hemoglobin and melanin by using the projection transformed block coefficient and determine the existence of skin pigmentation according to the global and local distribution of two intensities. Furthermore, we measure the area and density of the detected skin pigmentation. Experimental results verified that our scheme can both detect the skin pigmentation and measure the quantity of that and also our scheme takes less time because of the location histogram.

  • This paper presents an image contrast enhancement technique for improving the low contrast images using the improved IAFC(Integrated Adaptive Fuzzy Clustering) model. The low pictorial information of a low contrast image is due to the vagueness or fuzziness of the multivalued levels of brightness rather than randomness. Fuzzy image processing has three main stages, namely, image fuzzification, modification of membership values, and image defuzzification. Using a new model of automatic crossover point selection, optimal crossover point is selected automatically. The problem of crossover point selection can be considered as the two-category classification problem. The improved IAFC model is used to classify the image into two classes. The proposed method is applied to several experimental images with 256 gray levels and the results are compared with those of the histogram equalization technique. We utilized the index of fuzziness as a measure of image quality. The results show that the proposed method is better than the histogram equalization technique.

  • This paper proposes a multi-level thresholding method for image segmentation using fuzzy clustering algorithm in transition region. Most of threshold-based image segmentation methods determine thresholds based on the histogram distribution of a given image. Therefore, the methods have difficulty in determining thresholds for real-image, which has a complex and undistinguished distribution, and demand much computational time and memory size. To solve these problems, we determine thresholds for real-image using fuzzy clustering algorithm after extracting transition region consisting of essential and important components in image. Transition region is extracted based on Inか entropy, which is robust to noise and is well-known as a tool that describes image information. And fuzzy clustering algorithm can determine optimal thresholds for real-image and be easily extended to multi-level thresholding. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for performance.

  • The purpose of video segmentation is to segment video sequence into shots where each shot represents a sequence of frames having the same contents, and then select key frames from each shot for indexing. There are two types of shot changes, abrupt and gradual. The major problem of shot change detection lies on the difficulty of specifying the correct threshold, which determines the performance of shot change detection. As to the clustering approach, the right number of clusters is hard to be found. Different clustering may lead to completely different results. In this thesis, we propose a video segmentation method using a color-X$^2$ intensity histogram-based fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm.

  • In this paper we present a novel approach for image retrieval using color and edge information. We take into account the HSI(Hue, Saturation and Intensity) color space instead of RGB space, which emphasizes more on visual perception. In our system colors in an image are clustered into a small number of representative colors. The color feature descriptor consists of the representative colors and their percentages in the image. An improved cumulative color histogram distance measure is defined for this descriptor. And also, we have developed an efficient edge detection technique as an optional feature to our retrieval system in order to surmount the weakness of color feature. During the query processing, both the features (color, edge information) could be integrated for image retrieval as well as a standalone entity, by specifying it in a certain proportion. The content-based retrieval system is tested to be effective in terms of retrieval and scalability through experimental results and precision-recall analysis.

  • There are three texture descriptors in MPEG-7 : Homogeneous Texture, Edge Histogram and Texture Browsing. In this paper, a comparative analysis is presented on the capability of MPEG-7 texture descriptors for iris recognition as part of an MPEG-7 application using descriptors. Through the experiments of comparing the clustering efficiency and error distribution of the descriptors using 560 iris images, their discriminating capabilities for different iris groups are analyzed. The results show that Homogenous Texture descriptor is the best discriminator among three descriptors to recognize the iris pattern. However, compared with the conventional iris recognition methods, it needs more efforts to enhance the results.

  • In this study, we introduce the pedestrian detection system by using the feature of HOG-PCA and RBFNNs pattern classifier. HOG(Histogram of Oriented Gradient) feature is extracted from input image to identify and recognize a object. And a dimension is reduced for improving performance as well as processing speed by using PCA which is a typical dimensional reduction algorithm. So, the feature of HOG-PCA through the dimensional reduction by using PCA leads to the improvement of the detection rate. FCM clustering algorithm is used instead of gaussian function to apply the characteristic of input data as well and connection weight is used by polynomial expression such as constant, linear, quadratic and modified quadratic. Finally, INRIA person database known as one of the benchmark dataset used for pedestrian detection is applied for the performance evaluation of the proposed classifier. The experimental result of the proposed classifier are compared with those studied by Dalal.

  • The principal objective of enhancement methods is to process an image so that the output image is more suitable than the original image lot a specific application. Images taken in the night can be low-contrast images because of poor environments. In this paper, we compared the performance of Image Contrast Enhancement Technique Using Clustering Algorithm(ICECA) with those of color adjustment methods such as Histogram Equalization(HE), Brightness Preserving Bi-Histogram Equalization(BBHE), and the Multi-Scale Refiner(MSR). We compared these methods by applying the image enhancement methods to a set of diverse images.

  • In this paper, an automated segmentation algorithm is proposed for MR brain images using T1-weighted, T2-weighted, and PD images complementarily. The proposed segmentation algorithm is composed of 3 steps. In the first step, cerebrum images are extracted by putting a cerebrum mask upon the three input images. In the second step, outstanding clusters that represent inner tissues of the cerebrum are chosen among 3-dimensional (3D) clusters. 3D clusters are determined by intersecting densely distributed parts of 2D histogram in the 3D space formed with three optimal scale images. Optimal scale image best describes the shape of densely distributed parts of pixels in 2D histogram. In the final step, cerebrum images are segmented using FCM algorithm with it’s initial centroid value as the outstanding cluster’s centroid value. The proposed segmentation algorithm complements the defect of FCM algorithm, being influenced upon initial centroid, by calculating cluster’s centroid accurately And also can get better segmentation results from the proposed segmentation algorithm with multi spectral analysis than the results of single spectral analysis.
