Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the net joint moment and joint power of the lower extremity during squat in female patients with genu varum. Method: Eight female patients with genu varum were asked to do regular squats, and their net joint moment and joint power were compared to those of another eight female participants with straight legs. Their video recordings and ground reaction force data were analyzed to be used as a theoretical evidence of squatting effectively for female patients with genu varum. Results: Squats had a higher impact on internal knee joint rotation and ankle joint flexion moments in the genu varum group than in the straight leg group due to their weak and short hip joint muscles. Conclusion: There is a need to develop a squat movement that is appropriate for women with genu varum in order to distribute overload efficiently among the hip, knee, and ankle joints and to strengthen the muscles in a balanced way.

This study was conducted to observe the effect on appendage muscle strength according to increase in occlusal vertical dimension. For this study, ten males with a mean age of 21 were selected. The subjects had a complete or almost complete set of natural teeth and reported no subjected symptoms of pain or dysfunction in the masticatory system. The tested occlusal splints were made at the position of increased occlusal vertical dimension of 2mm, 3.5mm, and 5mm from the ICP. Before and after wearing occlusal splints, the appendage muscle strength were tested by CybexII Dynamometer in each subject. The results were as follows : 1. When occlusal vertical dimension was increased, most of mean muscular strength values were increased except for those of supination and pronation of forearm at the position of 5mm increased occlusal vertical dimension. 2. The statistical analyses demonstrated that the increased occlusal vertical dimension position to be significantly stronger than intercuspal position for the muscle strength of the flexion and extension of hip, supination of forearm, external and internal rotation of knee, dorsiflexion and plantarflexion of ankle (p<0.05). 3. At the position of 3.5mm increased vertical dimension displayed the highest mean muscluar strength value than other positions. 4. Statistically demonstrated values, except for supination of forearm, internal rotation of shoulder, were related to lower appendage. Therefore splint was more effective on lower appendage than upper appendage to make muscle strength increased. 5. The mean increased rate of muscular strength tested on knee(57%), ankle(42%), and wrist(20%) were higher than hip(31%), elbow(14%), and shoulder(17%).
Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of foot landing type (forefoot vs. rearfoot landing) on kinematics, kinetics, and energy absorption of hip, knee, and ankle joints. Method: Twenty-five healthy men performed single-leg landings with two different foot landing types: forefoot and rearfoot landing. A motion-capture system equipped with eight infrared cameras and a synchronized force plate embedded in the floor was used. Three-dimensional kinematic and kinetic parameters were compared using paired two-tailed Student's t-tests at a significance level of .05. Results: On initial contact, a greater knee flexion angle was shown during rearfoot landing (p < .001), but the lower knee flexion angle was found at peak vertical ground reaction force (GRF) (p < .001). On initial contact, ankles showed plantarflexion, inversion, and external rotation during forefoot landing, while dorsiflexion, eversion, and internal rotation were shown during rearfoot landing (p < .001, all). At peak vertical GRF, the knee extension moment and ankle plantarflexion moment were lower in rearfoot landing than in forefoot landing (p = .003 and p < .001, respectively). From initial contact to peak vertical GRF, the negative work of the hip, knee, and ankle joint was significantly reduced during rearfoot landing (p < .001, all). The contribution to the total work of the ankle joint was the greatest during forefoot landing, whereas the contribution to the total work of the hip joint was the greatest during rearfoot landing. Conclusion: These results suggest that the energy absorption strategy was changed during rearfoot landing compared with forefoot landing according to lower-extremity joint kinematics and kinetics.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was carried out to review the correlation between foot shape(supination foot, pronation foot) and low back pain, hip abduction muscle and ankle lateral sprain. Methods : By using internet, we research the PubMed, Science Direct, KISS, DBpia We selected the article between 1990 and 2007. Key words were supination foot, pronation foot, balance. Results : Normal control balance of human body needs a optimal anatomical alignment and function of musculoskeletal and central nerve system that control continuously to integrate. Especially ankle and foot complex play an important role in postural control because it is located distal part in human body. Supination foot brings to chronic ankle sprain or chronic ankle instability and range of motion limitation due to the weakness of lateral ankle muscle. Pronation foot brings to knee injury because of lower leg internal rotation force. Conclusion : Excessive supination and pronation foot happen to muscle imbalance. Especially weakness of hip abduction or injury of ankle lateral muscle or low back pain are due to abnormal balance and anatomical alignment.
Although the progress in bipedal walking is impressive in recent years, biped robots still require very high torque and can walk only for a short time interval with their internal batteries. Therefore, further research needs to be carried out to enhance walking efficiency of these robots. In order to achieve this goal, we attempt to imitate human walking with pelvis and waist joint rotations in the frontal plane. In order to investigate the effect of the pelvis and waist joint rotations in the frontal plane motion, we study the frontal plane model with a triangular structure made up of a waist joint and two hip joints. Through simulation, we show that the pelvis rotation can reduce the maximum torque and the control effort, and the waist joint rotation can reduce the trunk sway caused by the pelvis rotation. The combination of these two rotations makes the bipedal walking in the frontal plane more efficient.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the biomechanical alterations in the punching motion of 10 elderly women after 12 weeks of taekwonaerobics training. Seven infrared cameras(Qualisys MCU-240) and 2 force platforms(Kistler-9286AA) were used to acquire raw data. The results were as follows. First, the minimum joint angles of the lower limbs had a statistically significant difference between both the dorsiflexion/plantar flexion(1eft, $p=0.001^*$) and the inversion/eversion(both, $p=0.009^*$, $p=0.04^*$) from the ankle angle. There were differences in abduction/adduction(left, $p=0.04^*$) from the knee angle, as well as internal/external rotation(both, $p=0.07^*$, $p=0.02^*$) from the hip angle. Second, the maximum resultant joint moments of the lower limbs had statistically significant differences in the inversion/eversion moment from the ankle joint(both, $p=0.05^*$, $p=0.05^*$), the abduction/adduction moment(left, $p=0.08^*$) from the knee joint, and the internal/external rotation moment(right, $p=0.09^*$) from the hip joint. Third, the maximum resultant joint powers of the lower limbs had a statistically significant difference both in flexion/extension joint powers(both, $p=0.05^*$, $p=0.01^*$) and in abduction/adduction(both, $p=0.02^*$, $p=0.00^*$) from the hip joint, as well as abduction/adduction(left, $p=0.00^*$) from the knee joint, In conclusion, the elderly women were somewhat changed after 12 weeks of taekwonaerobics training.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the kinemaitc gait parameter of lower extremities with different gait conditions(level walking, stairs, ramp) in old adults. Fourteen healthy older adults participated in this study and kinematic data were measured using 3D motion analysis system(Vicon, Oxford Metrics, England). Statistical analysis was used one-way ANOVA to know the difference of lower extremities angle at each gait phase with a different gait conditions. In sagittal plane, pelvic anterior tilt increased in stairs and ramp climbing and hip and knee flexion increased in stairs climbing but ankle dorsiflexion increased in ramp climbing. In frontal plane, pelvic was up in stairs and hip abduction and adduction more changed in stairs climbing than level walking. Knee varus and ankle inversion increased in stair climbing. In horizontal plane, pelvic internal rotation increased in stairs and ramp climbing and knee internal rotation increased in stairs climbing but ankle external rotation increased in stairs climbing. This results was shown that the stairs and ramp climbing changed the kinematic gait parameters of lower extremities in healthy old adults.
The purpose of this study was to analyze kinematic variables during Side kick motion in Taekwon Aerobics. The subjects of this study were the 7 skilled and 7 unskilled female college students. A QTM and an Auto Track were used to acquire raw data. The sampling rates camera was 100 Hz. The parameters were calculated and analyzed with Visual3D and SPSS 12.0. The results were as following; 1. In the elapsed time, there was no significance difference statically between a skilled and unskilled group. 2. In the cases of knee angle, there was significant difference statically at Maximum Knee Flexion2(p=0.046, F=4.925). 3. In the cases of knee angular velocity, there was significant difference statically at Maximum Knee Flexion1(p=0.031, F=5.940). 4. In the flexion/extension of hip angle, there was significant difference statically at Maximum Knee Flexion2(p=0.012, F=8.668). 5. In the abduction/adduction of hip angular velocity, there was significant difference statically at Minimum Knee Flexion (p=0.019, F=7.324). 6. In the external rotation/internal rotation of hip angular velocity, there was significant difference statically Minimum Knee Flexion(p=0.005, F=11.87).
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of an 8-week closed kinetic chain typed Reformer and Chair Pilates exercise on static and dynamic lower limb alignment for healthy female adults. Method: Ten healthy young female adults without musculoskeletal injury history in last 6 months (Age: 29.3 ± 3.5 yrs., Height: 165 ± 3.4 cm, Body mass: 58.2 ± 5.4 kg) participated in this study. Conclusion: From results of our study, it is concluded that an 8-week closed kinetic chain typed Pilates exercise positively effect on lower limb alignment during dynamic movement.
K. H. KIM, J. H. CHO, and S. C. LEE, The Effect of Taping on Lower Extremity during Jump Landing in Subjects with Functional Ankle Instability. Korean Journal of Sport Biomechanics, Vol. 19, No. 2, pp. 265-272, 2009. Ankle taping is thought that it can be very useful in clinical setting for reducing injury. However, the studies of ankle taping is focused only ankle joint. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of taping on lower extremity during jump landing in subjects with functional ankle instability. we collected the data from VICON. Joint range of motion for sagittal plane, frontal plane and transverse plane were measured during a jump-landing task. Taping used in this study appeared to restrict ankle motion with altering the knee and hip joint ROM. We found ankle taping had effects of reducing PF, initial contact PF in sagittal plane, while increasing knee flexion, hip flexion, intial contact hip flexion statistically. It decreased ankle inversion, knee valgus, initial contact knee valgus, hip abduction in frontal plane and ankle abduction, hip internal rotation in transverse plane statistically. Ankle taping showed significant change Knee and hip joint ROM with ankle joint ROM.
