  • The wind load equation for the design of electric power facilities such as electrical pole in railroad is based on the maximum wind velocity without considering regional difference in wind velocities. Also, the use of a different equation to highspeed railroad and the possibility of higher wind speed due to climate change claims a new design equation. In this paper, a wind load equation based on wind speed measurement data to date, which is applicable to both conventional and highspeed railroad is proposed. The proposed equation considers the regional differences in wind speed for economic and effective design, and the possibility of higher wind speed due to climate change.

  • LTE-R(Long Term Evolution-Railway) for high speed railway system operation as an essential technology is based on LTE. Recently, moving speed of high speed train is on going to 600[km/h] level over commercial speed 400[㎞/h]. LTE-R as communication technology for a high speed railway system can be able to provide seamless communication to support moving speed for high speed railway system. In this study, a handover method based on prediction is suggested and performance of the suggested method is evaluated. Computer simulation based on NS(Network Simulator)-3 is used for this study.

  • The first high speed railway in Korea was opened to traffic on April 1, 2004 and the second phase will be opened on November 1. 2010. Many technical problems that occurred during construction have been solved. In its early period of project, difficulties were encountered in design, construction of high speed line. because most of Korean railway engineers were familiar only with conventional railway. Now they understand the various phenomena occuring during operation of the KTX and have accumulated extensive technical knowhow. Valuable experiences and knowledges that have been obtained from frials and errors will lead to further improvement for the future project.

  • This paper presents a mathematical model of the long-term track tamping scheduling problem in the Korean highspeed railway system. The presented model encompasses various operational field constraints, moreover improves a state-of-the-art model in extending the feasible space. We show the model is sized up to intractable scale, then propose another approximation model that is possible to handle with the present computer system and commercial optimization package, directly. The aggregated index, lot, is selected, considering the resolution of the planning horizon as well as scheduling purpose. Lastly, this paper presents two test results for the approximation model. The results expose the approximation model to quite promising in deploying it into an operational software program for the long-term track tamping scheduling problem.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of wheel wear of high speed train running on the conventional line. Conventional line has many curved tracks that cause severe wheel flange wear. The influences of lubrication, cant deficiency, curve radius on wheel wear are also described considering the operation performance of the highspeed trainset. A method of calculation using contact patch work model is presented for determination of the evolution by wear of railway wheels.

  • The KTX, first Korean Highspeed train from Seoul to Busan, is scheduled to begin its passenger service in 2004, with improvement of existing railroad between Daegu and Busan and Honam region. This paper aims to suggest the best train operation plan and detailed diagram pattern so that the KTX could work effectively as much as possible. I suggest for instance, connecting direct train and local train, hub stations plan, multi-destination train, and improvement of fare system.

  • The Electromagnetic Interference(EMI) in railway applications is largely due to doing the power conversion for traction and Auxiliary system on the Highspeed Electric Multiple Unit-400X(HEMU-400X). In order to research on EMI in railway applications, it were included how much the HEMU-400X generates it and it has an effect on the equipments of electric system which resulted from Power Line Disturbance (PLD) phenomenon by the loss of contact during its running. In this study, the dynamic characteristic of a contact wire and pantograph suppling electrical power to high-speed trains are investigated. The analysis of the loss of contact based on Power Simulator program software is performed to develop power line disturbance model suitable for high speed operation. It is confirmed that a contact wire and pantograph model are necessary for studying the dynamic behavior of the pantograph system.

  • Korea became the 5th country by opening the Kyungbu-Highspeed Railway in April of 2004, which has contributed to technical innovations and motivated to increase SOC investment for the Railroad facilities. This increase of Railroad facilities will need the many railroad civil engineers who are in charge of construction and maintenance. Moreover, we need more qualitative engineers to catch up with the speed of technical renovation and to play an important role in exporting our railroad technique to outside country such as China, and Russia. In this paper, a new alternative of training railroad civil engineers will be investigated in relation to NURI Project, which is sponsored by Ministy of Education.

  • Recently, various monitoring systems have been proposed to detect interaction performance between trains and infrastructure, as well as, various techniques to improve the accuracy and performance of such inspection equipment in high speeds. Especially, it is important to predict electric noise of high speed trains due to its effect on detection system accuracy. In this paper, we analyze various types of electrical noise in electric vehicles to improve the accuracy of the detection module of the inspection car. In detail, analysis of electric noise of high speed railway is performed as a function of speed based on field tests that were carried out by HEMU-430X (Highspeed Eletric Multiple Unit - 430 km/h eXperiment).

  • Since its invention at TWI in 1991, Friction Stir Welding (FSW) has become a major joining process in the aerospace, railway and ship building industries especially in the fabrication of aluminium alloys. In an attempt to optimize the friction stir welding process of Al alloys for extrusion Aluminium carbody of HEMU-400X (Extrusion Aluminum 6xxx series), effects of joining parameters such as tool rotating speed, plunging depth and dwelling time on the weld joints properties were evaluated. Experimental tests were carried out for butt joined Al plates. A wide range of joining conditions could be applied to join Al alloys for Extrusion Aluminum 6xxx series without defects in the weld zone except for certain welding conditions with an insufficient heat input. The microstructures of welds have dynamic-recrystallized grain similar to stir zone in FSW weld. For sound joints without defects, at the rotation speed of 700 rpm with different welding speeds, the tensile strengths of the Stir Zone(SZ) were almost the same, 80% of those of the base metal.
