The theories having been developed thus far account for higher-order variation of transverse shear strain through the depth of the beam and satisfy the stress-free boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the beam. A shear correction factor, therefore, is not required. In this paper, the effect of surface on the axial buckling and free vibration of nanobeams is studied using various refined higher-order shear deformation beam theories. Furthermore, these theories have strong similarities with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory in aspects such as equations of motion, boundary conditions, and expressions of the resultant stress. The equations of motion and boundary conditions were derived from Hamilton's principle. The resultant system of ordinary differential equations was solved analytically. The effects of the nanobeam length-to-thickness ratio, thickness, and modes on the buckling and free vibration of the nanobeams were also investigated. Finally, it was found that the buckling and free vibration behavior of a nanobeam is size-dependent and that surface effects and surface energy produce significant effects by increasing the ratio of surface area to bulk at nano-scale. The results indicated that surface effects influence the buckling and free vibration performance of nanobeams and that increasing the length-to-thickness increases the buckling and free vibration in various higher-order shear deformation beam theories. This study can assist in measuring the mechanical properties of nanobeams accurately and designing nanobeam-based devices and systems.

In this study, we measured the power and temperature of the floating horizontal solar cell in a coastal lagoon and compared with those of ground solar cell and water platform solar cell. Because the bottom surface of the floating horizontal solar cell was contacting the water, cooling effect was expected stronger than other cells. As a result of the measurement, the power of floating horizontal cell was 11.7% higher than that of the ground cell and 15% higher than that of the water platform cell. During the measurement, it was observed that water waves were continuously flowed on the top surface of floating horizontal cell by the wind, and it could be assumed that the cooling effect occurred not only on the bottom surface of the cell but also on the top surface. In order to analyze the cooling effect and power increasing of the horizontal cell in the wave situation, we measured power and temperature of the cell while generating artificial waves in a laboratory equipped with Zenon lamp as a solar simulator. At the height of thewater surface, the power of the cell with waves was 3.7% higherthan without waves and temperature was 4.6℃ lower. At 1 cm and 2 cm below the watersurface, power of the cell with waves was decreased by 14% and 11% than without waves while temperature was same . At 3 cm below the water surface, there was no effect of waves.
In this paper a new eight-unknown higher order shear deformation theory is proposed for functionally graded (FG) material plates. The theory based on full twelve-unknown higher order shear deformation theory, simultaneously satisfy zeros transverse stresses at top and bottom surface of FG plates. Equations of motion are derived from principle of virtual displacement. Exact closed-form solutions are obtained for simply supported rectangular FG plates under uniform loading. The accuracy of present numerical results has been verified by comparing it with generalized shear deformation theory. The effect of power law index of functionally graded material, side-to-thickness ratio, and aspect ratio on static behavior of FG plates is investigated.
A higher order analytical solution for static analysis of a truncated conical composite sandwich panel subjected to different loading conditions was presented in this paper which was based on a new improved higher order sandwich panel theory. Bending analysis of sandwich structures with flexible cores subjected to concentrated load, uniform distributed load on a patch, harmonic and uniform distributed loads on the top and/or bottom face sheet of the sandwich structure was also investigated. For the first time, bending analysis of truncated conical composite sandwich panels with flexible cores was performed. The governing equations were derived by principle of minimum potential energy. The first order shear deformation theory was used for the composite face sheets and for the core while assuming a polynomial description of the displacement fields. Also, the in-plane hoop stresses of the core were considered. In order to assure accuracy of the present formulations, convergence of the results was examined. Effects of types of boundary conditions, types of applied loads, conical angles and fiber angles on bending analysis of truncated conical composite sandwich panels were studied. As, there is no research on higher order bending analysis of conical sandwich panels with flexible cores, the results were validated by ABAQUS FE code. The present approach can be linked with the standard optimization programs and it can be used in the iteration process of the structural optimization. The proposed approach facilitates investigation of the effect of physical and geometrical parameters on the bending response of sandwich composite structures.
In this paper, various nonlocal higher-order shear deformation beam theories that consider the size dependent effects in Functionally Graded Material (FGM) beam are examined. The presented theories fulfill the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surface of the beam and a shear correction factor is not required. Hamilton's principle is used to derive equation of motion as well as related boundary condition. The Navier solution is applied to solve the simply supported boundary conditions and exact formulas are proposed for the bending and static buckling. A parametric study is also included to investigate the effect of gradient index, length scale parameter and length-to-thickness ratio (aspect ratio) on the bending and the static buckling characteristics of FG nanobeams.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of sign language video location in e-learning system for the hearing-impaired. Background: E-learning education is a good way to resolve the inequality of education for the disabled. Providing a sign language video in e-learning education for the hearing-impaired is very important for their learning. Although the location of sign language video is an important factor in the design of the video, the effect of its location in learning using the e-learning system was not studied. Method: In order to identify the effect of sign language video location on the learning of the hearing-impaired using the e-learning system, the prototypes of the system with different locations were developed. Eighteen people with hearing impairment participated in this experiment. Learning presence, learning immersion, and learning satisfaction were used to measure learning effects with sign language video location. Results: Bottom right position was more preferred through preference evaluation for sign language video location. The learning effect with sign language video location (bottom-left and bottom-right) was not significant. That is, the effects of learning presence, immersion, and satisfaction were not statistically significant with video location. Conclusion: From this study, the following have to be considered in e-learning system design for the hearing-impaired. Although the location of a sign language video is not a significant factor from the experiment, the bottom right position in the design is proposed because learning presence and satisfaction is slightly higher at the bottom right position, and the position is preferred from subjective evaluation. From the analysis of interview data, it was also proposed that the design of a sign language video should be improved for the hearing-impaired. Application: The result of this study can be applied to the e-learning system design for the hearing-impaired.
In the present study, a fifth-order shear and normal deformation theory using a polynomial function in the displacement field is developed and employed for the static analysis of laminated composite and sandwich simply supported spherical shells subjected to sinusoidal load. The significant feature of the present theory is that it considers the effect of transverse normal strain in the displacement field which is eliminated in classical, first-order and many higher-order shell theories, while predicting the bending behavior of the shell. The present theory satisfies the zero transverse shear stress conditions at the top and bottom surfaces of the shell. The governing equations and boundary conditions are derived using the principle of virtual work. To solve the governing equations, the Navier solution procedure is employed. The obtained results are compared with Reddy's and Mindlin's theory for the validation of the present theory.

This paper presents a static study of a rectangular functional graded material (FGM) plate, simply supported on its four edges, adopting a refined higher order theory that looks for, only, four unknowns, without taking into account any corrective factor of the deformation energy with the satisfaction of the zero shear stress conditions on the upper and lower faces of the plate. We will have determined the contribution of these stresses in the transverse deflection of the plate, as well as their effects on the axial stress within the interfaces between the layers(to avoid any problem of imperfections such as delamination) and on the top and bottom edges of the plate in order to take into account the fatigue phenomenon when choosing the distribution law of the properties used during the design of the plate. A numerical statement, in percentage, of the contribution of the shear effect is made in order to show the reliability of the adopted theory. We will also have demonstrated the need to add the shear effect when the aspect ratio is small or large. Code routines are programmed to obtain numerical results illustrating the validity of the model proposed in the theory compared to those available in the literature.
Following the approach of Ebersole (1985), water wave transformation is predicted using the eikonal equation and transport equation for wave energy which are reduced from the extended mild-slope equation of Massel (1993), and also the irrotationality of wave number vectors. The higher-order bottom effect terms, i.e., squared bottom slope and bottom curvature, are neglected in the study of Ebersole but are included in the present study. It was expected that, if these terms are included in this study, the approach would give more accurate solution in the case of rapidly varying topography. But, the expectation was frustrated. It is probably because, in the case of rapidly varying topography, the diffraction effect which is included in the eikonal equation does not work well and thus the solution is deteriorated.

Ocean space utilization using VLFS(Very Large Floating Structures) can provide environmental impact free space by allowing sea water flow freely through the floating structure. Use of Pontoon type VLFS for that purpose needs employment of breakwaters for reduction of wave effects. Therefore, in order to maximize advantage of environmental impact free structure, the breakwater should be the one that can allow water flow freely through it, too. In this paper hydroelastic response of a pontoon type structure is analyzed considering breakwaters which allow water flow through its opening at bottom of the breakwaters. Mode superposition technique is used for solving equation of flexible body while interactions between the pontoon and breakwaters is considered based on generalized mode concept. Bi-quadratic nine node higher-order boundary element method is adopted for more accurate numerical treatment near sharp edged body shape. Performance of various combinations of breakwaters is investigated.
