  • It is well established fact that under tropical condition, unlike polyvoltines, bivoltines are more vulnerable to various stresses i.e. hot climatic conditions of tropics, poor leaf quality and improper management during summer which are not conducive for bivoltine rearing. Therefore, attempt has been made in this study to develop promising bivoltine breeds tolerant to high temperature and high humidity conditions of the tropics. In the present study, by utilizing temperature tolerant breeds six breeding lines were made and at every generation the 5th instar larvae were exposed to high temperature and high humidity and the survived ones were back crossed with the breeds moderately tolerant to diseases were made to improve the quantitative traits. From F6 generations, alternate rearing in normal temperature and high temperature were conducted. At the end of F12 generation, it was possible to isolate three dumbbell breeds viz., HH8, HH10 and HH12 with improvement in quantitative traits. The methodologies followed for the development are discussed.

  • In order to assess risk of high temperature damages about corn during reproduction stages in the future, we carried out analysis of climate change scenarios RCP (Representative Concentration Pathway) 4.5 and RCP8.5 distributed by KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) in 2012. We established two indexes such as average of annual risk days of high temperature damage which express frequency and strengthen index of high temperature damage. As results of producing maps for 157 cities and counties about average of annual risk days of high temperature damage during total periods of scenarios, the risk of high temperature in RCP8.5 was evaluated to increase at all over nation except inland area of Gangwon province, while RCP4.5 showed similar to present, or little higher. The maps of annual risk days of high temperature damage with 10 years interval in RCP8.5 prospected that the risk for damaging corn growth would increase rapidly from 2030's. The largest risk of high temperature damage in the future of RCP8.5 was analyzed at Changnyeong county located east-south inland area in Kyeongnam province, while the smallest of risk counties were Pyeongchang, Taebaek, Inje, and Jeongseon. The prospect at 12 counties which is large to produce corn at present and contains large plains have been showed that there will be only a little increase of risk of high temperature at Goesan, Yangpyeong, Hongcheon, Seosan, and Mooju until 2060's. But considering strengthen index of high temperature damage, most regions analyzed would be prospected to increase rapidly after 2030's. To cope with high temperature damage of corn in the future, we should develop various practical technologies including breeding adapted varieties and controlling cultivation periods.

  • High temperature wear behaviors of plasma-sprayed ZrO$_{2}$-$Y_{2}O_{3}$ composite coatings were investigated for high temperature wear resistance applications. The composite powders containing 20, 50, 80 vol% of alumina for plasma spray were made by spray drying method. Wear tests with composite coated specimens were performed at temperature ranges from room temperature to 800$^{\circ}$C. Wear tests were also carried out with heat treated specimens at room temperature. The microstructural change of coatings and the worn surface were examined by SEM and XRD. Sharp increase of wear loss at high temperature wear test was observed in specimens containing 50 and 80 vol% alumina. Similar trend was observed in the heat treated coatings. The measured residual stress was increased with increased alumina contents and heat treating temperatures. Residual stress induced during heat treatment appeared to be responsible to the observed harmful effect of alumina additions on the high temperature wear.

  • When water inside the concrete member evaporates by high temperature, the evaporation heat which absorbs surrounding temperature occurs. The rate of increment of the internal temperature in concrete is reduced due to the evaporation heat in spite of continuously increasing external temperature. In this paper, the prediction method of internal temperature of high strength concrete members considering the evaporation heat under the high temperature is presented. Finite element method is employed to facilitate thermal analysis for any position of member. And the thermal characteristics models of high strength concrete affected by high temperature are proposed. To demonstrate the validity of this numerical procedure, the prediction by the proposed algorithm is compared with the test results of other researchers. The proposed algorithm shows a good agreement with the experimental results including the phenomenon that temperature is lost by the evaporation heat.

  • Material degradation such as high temperature oxidation of metallic material is a severe problem in energy generation systems or manufacturing industries. The metallic materials are oxidized to form oxide films in high temperature environments. The oxide films act as diffusion barriers of oxygen and metal ions and thereafter decrease oxidation rates of metals. The metal oxidation is, however, accelerated by mechanical fracture and spalling of the oxide films caused by thermal stresses by repetition of temperature change, vibration and by the impact of solid particles. It is therefore very important to investigate mechanical properties and adhesion of oxide films in high temperature environments, as well as the properties in a room temperature environment. The oxidation tests were conducted for Ni and Ni-Co alloy under high temperature corrosive environments. The hardness distributions against the indentation depth from the top surface were examined at room temperature. Dynamic indentation tests were performed on Ni oxide films formed on Ni surfaces at room and high temperature to observe fractures or cracks generated around impact craters. As a result, it was found that the mechanical property as hardness of the oxide films were different between Ni and Ni-Co alloy, and between room and high temperatures, and that the adhesion of Ni oxide films was relatively stronger than that of Co oxide films.

  • The productivity of rice has been influenced by various abiotic factors including temperature which cause to limitations to rice yield and quality. Rice yield and quality are adversely affected by high temperature globally. In the present study, four Korean four cultivars such as Dongan, Ilpum, Samkwang, Chucheong were investigated in order to explore molecular mechanisms of high temperature at seedling stage. Rice seedlings grown at $28/20^{\circ}C$ (day/night) were subjected to 7-day exposure to $38/28^{\circ}C$ for high-temperature stress, followed by 2-D based proteomic analysis on biological triplicates of each treatment. The growth characteristics demonstrated that Dongan is tolerant while Ilpum is sensitive to high-temperature stress. High temperature has an adverse effect in the seedling stage both in high temperature sensitive and tolerant cultivar. Two-dimensional gels stained with silver staining, a total of 722 differential expressed protein spots (${\geq}1.5-fold$) were identified using Progenesis SameSpot software. However, a total of 38 differentially expressed protein spots were analyzed by LTQ-FT-ICR MS. Of these, 9 proteins were significantly increased while 10 decreased under high-temperature treatment. Significant changes were associated with the proteins involved in the carbohydrate metabolism, photosynthesis, and stress responses. Proteome results revealed that high-temperature stress had an inhibitory effect on carbon fixation, ATP production, and photosynthetic machinery pathway. The expression level of mRNA is significantly correlated with the results obtained in the proteome investigation. Taken together, these findings provide a better understanding of the high-temperature resistance by proteomic approaches, providing valuable insight into improving the high-temperature stress tolerance in the global warming epoch.

  • Wheat is frequently exposed to high temperature during anthesis and ripening period, which resulted in yield loss and detrimental end-use-quality. The transcriptome analysis of wheat under high temperature stress during the early stage of the grain filling period was undertaken. Three expression patterns of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) during grain filling period were identified. The DEGs of seed storage protein and starch-branching enzyme showed continuous increases in their expressions during high temperature stress, as well as during the recovery period. The activities of the enzymes responsible for the elimination of antioxidants were significantly affected by exposure to high temperature stress. Only the WAS-2 family genes showed increased transcription levels under high temperature stress in dehulled spikelets. The relative transcription levels for sub-genome specific WAS-2 genes suggested that WAS-2 genes reacted with over-expression under high temperature stress and decreased back to normal expression during recovery. We propose the role of WAS-2 as a protective mechanism during the stage of grain development under high temperature in spikelets.

  • The split Hopkinson pressure bar has been used for a high strain rate impact test. Also it has been developed and modified for compression, shear, tension, elevated temperature and subzero tests. In this paper, SHPB compression tests have been performed with pure titanium at elevated temperatures. The range of temperature is from room temperature to $1000^{\circ}C$ with interval of $200^{\circ}C$. To raise temperature of the specimen, a radiant heater which is composed of a pair of ellipsoidal cavities and halogen lamps is developed at high temperature SHPB test. There are some difficulties in a high temperature test such as temperature gradient, lubrication and prevention of oxidation of specimen. The temperature gradient of specimen is affected by the variation of temperature. Barreling occurred at not properly lubricated specimen. Stress-strain relations of pure titanium have been obtained in the range of strain rate at $1900/sec{\sim}2000/sec$ and temperature at $25^{\circ}C{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$.

  • The present study performed low-pressure steam curing with mortar specimens in order to examine the temperature profile and strength development of steam curing in high-strength specimens of 100MPa. In addition, as a basic research to utilize PC products, we examined the effects of curing temperature and time in steam curing cycle on strength development resulting from the hydration of cement within the range of high strength by changing four factors affecting the quality of PC displacement time, peak curing temperature, peak temperature duration, and ascending and descending gradient of temperature - in various patterns, and analyzed the optimal strength development characteristic based on the relation between temperature profile and strength development. With regard to the high-temperature curing characteristic of PC, we performed an experiment on the strength characteristic according to the temperature profile of high-strength mortar, and from the results of the experiment according to curing characteristic, displacement time, peak curing temperature, peak temperature duration, and ascending and descending gradient of temperature, we drew conclusions as follows.

  • Characteristics of a diesel spray impingement with the variation of ambient temperature, wall temperature and ambient pressure were investigated through shadowgraphy method by using high speed camera. The radial penetration of spray was increased with ambient temperature and wall temperature. It is resulted from the decrease of ambient gas density caused by the increase of temperature. The height of spray was also increased with ambient temperature and wall temperature, because the height of stagnate region is noticeably increased, although height of wall jet vortex is decreased. At the same ambient pressure, the area ratio of impinging spray of room temperature environment to high temperature environment was increased, as the temperature difference between room temperature and high temperature increases. And the increment of area ratio was higher at low ambient pressure than high ambient pressure.
