Proper shaft alignment is one of the most important actions during the design of the propulsion system. The stiffness of recently designed marine propulsion shafting has been increasing remarkably, whereas hull structures have become more likely to deform as a result of optimized design of the scantlings and the high tensile steel. Therefore, to obtain the optimum status in shafting alignment at the design stage, it is strongly recommended that the change of bearing reaction force depending on ballast/load condition, the bending moment force occurred by propeller thrust, elastic deformation of bearing occurred by vertical load of shaft mass and etc., should be considered. This paper dealing with introduction of shaft alignment concerning long shaft for high speed vessel and review its reliability evaluation theoretically.
With the sharp increase of the oil price, the issue of the energy saving requires even higher propulsive efficiency of the propellers. Traditionally the propellers have been designed with the criteria such as that of Lerbs optimum based on the lifting line theory and the empirical formulae of Lerbs and van Manen giving relations of the wake pitch with the wake non-uniformity. With the aid of the high speed computer, it is now possible to apply the time-consuming iterative approaches for the solution of the lifting surface problems. In this paper we formulate the variational problem to optimize the efficiency of the propeller operating in the given ship wake using the lifting surface method. The variational formulation relating the spanwise circulation distribution with the propulsive efficiency to be maximized is however non-linear in circulation distribution functions, thus the iterative method is applied to the quasi-linearized equations. The blade shape design also requires the iterative procedures, because the shape of the blade which is represented by the lifting surface is unknown a priori. The numerical code was validated with the DTNSRDC propeller 4119 which is well-known to be optimum in uniform inflow condition. In addition existing (well-designed) commercial propellers were selected and compared with the results of the open water tests and the self-propulsion tests.
Water jet propulsion system has low efficiency than screw propeller at low speed, but has been applied in high speed ship due to its better cavitation performance and high rotation capacity. In this study, a numerical analysis was conduct to understand the flow in the propulsion system of 200HP grade water jet for small ship. As the result, it could be confirmed that total pressure and force of the flow was increased through the impeller and the straight-ability of discharging flow to outlet was improved by guide vane. Also, the reliability of numerical analysis was secured by comparing peripheral velocity calculated by design values with that calculated by numerical analysis.
Heavy-weight high speed underwater vehicle(HSUV) is launched from the submerged mother ship. For the safety point of view, it is important to confirm whether the HSUV would touch the launching mother ship. In this paper, the hydrodynamic force and moment were modeled by the polynomials of motion variables and the simple lift and drag acting on a plate and cylinder which consist of the HSUV's several parts. The mother ship was assumed as the Rankine half body to consider the flow field near the moving ship. Such hydrodynamic force and moment were included in the 6 DOF equations of motion of the HSUV and the dynamic simulations for the various conditions of the HSUV until the propeller activation were performed. Developed simulation program is expected to reduce the number of expensive sea trial test to develop safety logic of the HSUV at the initial firing stage.

The feasibility of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Ship propulsion using superconduction magnets is reviewed in light of recent advances in high-temperature superconducting. The propulsion using a screw propeller in the noise reduction has it's own limitation. The epochal noiseless MHD propulsion method which does not have this disadvantage is studying nowadays. The subject of a marine MHD as propulsion has been examined before and was found to be interesting because of relatively low magnetic flux densities. It is demonstrated that the MHD propulsion is technically interesting with high magnetic flux density. The development of large-scale magnets using the high-temperature superconductors now under development could make it practical to construct submersibles for high-speed and silent operation.
The street canyon forms the geometric unit of the built environment. The geometry makes up urban canyons and it influences the urban climate. In order to investigate the wind characteristics of urban street canyon at Dogok-dong, Gangnam-gu in Seoul, the wind direction and wind speed data were observed and analyzed by using 2-D ultra sonic and propeller wind monitor from May 5, 2010 to May 4, 2011. The results show that the prevailing wind direction was west at Station A(Military Mutual Aid Association Building), southwest at Station B(Sookmyung Girls' High School) and the wind speed of Station B was higher than Station A. There were diurnal differences about prevailing wind direction between two stations : it was westerly wind at Station A for a whole day, but at Station B only from 22 : 00 to 04 : 00. However, Station B is different from Station A at other time. At Station B, it was easterly wind from 04 : 00 to 12 : 00, southwesterly wind from 12 : 00 to 22 : 00. In terms of seasonal(except winter) frequency, the spring shows the highest frequency and fall was the next.
In the early design stage of underwater vehicles, it is important to estimate the vehicle's underwater motion performance. The key design elements for the motion are propellers, battery power, and underwater resistance of the vehicle. Small thrusters with motor and propeller are usually used for the UUV(unmanned underwater vehicles). In this study, a multiphysics thruster model combining electro-mechanical and hydrodynamics characteristics was proposed to estimate the thruster performance. To show the applicability of the mathematical model, an sample thruster was used for the derive the unknown parameters of thruster. Hydrodynamic parameters were calculated for a 3D geometry model of the propeller by ANSYS/CFX program. Finally, Matlab/simulink program was used for the numerical simulation to predict the thruster performance from the given voltage/current input to the motor. Also, proved validity of simulation model by experiment test. Test were done by 2 mode(middle/high speed, reverse). The thruster performance curves obtained from this simulation were confirmed to be similar with experiment results.
The flow characteristics around a horn-type rudder behind an operating propeller of a high-speed large container carrier are studied through a numerical method in fully wetted and cavitating flow conditions. The computations are carried out in a small scale ratio of 10.00(gap space=5mm) to consider the gap effects. The Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equation for a mixed fluid and vapor transport equation applying cavitation model are solved. The axisymmetry body-force distribution technique is utilized to simulate the flow behind an operating propeller. The gap flow, the three-dimensional flow separation, and the cavitation are the flow characteristics of a horn-type rudder. The pattern of three-dimensional flow separation is analyzed utilizing a topological rule. The various cavity positions predicted by CFD were shown to be very similar to rudder erosion positions in real ship rudder. The effect of a preventing cavitation device, a horizontal guide plate, is also investigated.
