Impervious surface affects urban climate, flood, and water pollution and has important role as basic data for urban planning and environmental and resources management uses. With a high paved rate, increased quantity of the outflown water and brings urban flooding during a heavy rain. Moreover, these non-point source pollution is getting increased the water pollution. In this regard, it is definitely important to research and keep monitoring the current situation of paved surface, which influences urban ecosystem, disaster and pollution. In this study, we suggest a method to utilize high resolution satellite image data for efficient survey on the current condition of paved surface. We analysed the paved surface condition of Dae-jeon metropolitan city area using KOMPSAT-2 image and validate its practicalness and limitation of this method.

Diffuse pollution has been considering as a major source of the quality deterioration of water resources. The establishment of riparian vegetation strips or buffers along those areas of water bodies is used to reduce the threat of diffuse pollution. Remote sensing offers a means by which critical areas could be identified, so that subsequent action toward the establishment of riparian zones can be taken. On the behalf of KOMPSAT-2 satellite imagery as a high resolution spatial data, Landsat TM satellite data are used to aquire the land cover for the riparian buffers studied. This investigation aims to assess the riparian buffers established on the upper Geum river as a pollution mitigation. Through comparing the delineation of riparian buffer zones developed with the existing zones established by the government, we can find the critical distortion points of the existing riparian buffer zone.
In the satellite remote sensing, the operational environment of the satellite sensor causes image degradation during the image acquisition. The degradation results in noise and blurring which badly affect identification and extraction of useful information in image data. Especially, the degradation gives bad influence in the analysis of images collected over the scene with complicate surface structure such as urban area. This study proposes a multi-stage image restoration to improve the accuracy of detailed analysis for the images collected over the complicate scene. The proposed method assumes a Gaussian additive noise, Markov random field of spatial continuity, and blurring proportional to the distance between the pixels. Point-Jacobian Iteration Maximum A Posteriori (PJI-MAP) estimation is employed to restore a degraded image. The multi-stage process includes the image segmentation performing region merging after pixel-linking. A dissimilarity coefficient combining homogeneity and contrast is proposed for image segmentation. In this study, the proposed method was quantitatively evaluated using simulation data and was also applied to the two panchromatic images of super-high resolution: Dubaisat-2 data of 1m resolution from LA, USA and KOMPSAT3 data of 0.7 m resolution from Daejeon in the Korean peninsula. The experimental results imply that it can improve analytical accuracy in the application of remote sensing high resolution panchromatic imagery.

The purpose of Electro-Optical Camera (EOC), the primary payload of KOMPSAT-1, is to collect high resolution visible imagery of the Earth including Korean Peninsula. EOC images will be distributed to the public or many user groups including government, public corporations, academic or research institutes. KARI will offer the online service to the users through internet. Some application, e.g., generation of Digital Elevation Model (DEM), needs a secondary data such as satellite ephemeris data, attitude data to process the EOC imagery. EOC imagery with these ancillary information will be distributed in a file of Hierarchical Data Format (HDF) file formal. HDF is a physical file format that allows storage of many different types of scientific data including images, multidimensional data arrays, record oriented data, and point data. By the lack of public domain softwares supporting HDF file format, many public users may not access EOC data without difficulty. The purpose of this research is to develop a browsing system of EOC data for the general users not only for scientists who are the main users of HDF. The system is PC-based and huts user-friendly interface.

High-spatial resolution remote sensing satellites (IKONOS-2, QuickBird and KOMPSAT-2) have provided low-spatial resolution multispectral images and high-spatial resolution panchromatic images. Image fusion or Pan-sharpening is a very important in that it aims at using a satellite image with various applications such as visualization and feature extraction through combining images that have a different spectral and spatial resolution. Many image fusion algorithms are proposed, most methods could not preserve the spectral information of original multispectral image after image fusion. In order to solve this problem, modified induction technique which reduce the spectral distortion of fused image is developed. The spectral distortion is adjusted by the comparison between the spatially degraded pan-sharpened image and original multispectral image and our algorithm is evaluated by QuickBird satellite imagery. In the experiment, pan-sharpened image by various methods can reduce spectral distortion when our algorithm is applied to the fused images.

Many applications in the areas of agricultural, hydrological and environmental resource management require data over very large areas and with a high imaging frequency - monitoring crop growth, water stress, seasonal wetland flooding and natural vegetation development. This precludes the use of fine resolution data (Landsat, Spot) on the grounds of cost, accessibility and low imaging frequency. Meteorological satellites have the potential to fill this need, given their very wide spatial coverage, and high repeat imaging. The Remote Sensing Unit (RSU) at the Zambia Meteorological Department routinely receives, processes and archives imagery from both Meteosat and NOAA AVHRR satellites. Here I wish to present some examples of applications of these data sets that arise from the RSU work - relationships between rainfall and vegetation development as assessed by satellite, derived information and seasonal patterns of flooding in the Barotse floodplain and the Kafue flats. I also wish to outline ways in which a more widespread use of this data by the Zambian institutions canbe achieved.
As the availability of high-resolution satellite imagery increases, improvement of positioning accuracy of satellite images is required. The importance of orthorectified images is also increasing, which removes relief displacement and establishes true localization of man-made structures. In this paper, we performed automated extraction of building rooftops and total building areas within original satellite images using the existing building height database. We relocated the rooftop sin their true position and generated an orthorectified building layer. The extracted total building areas were used to blank out building areas and generate true orthographic non-building layer. A final orthorectified image was provided by overlapping the building layer and non-building layer. We tested the proposed method with KOMPSAT-3 and KOMPSAT-3A satellite images and verified the results by overlapping with a digital topographical map. Test results showed that orthorectified building layers were generated with a position error of 0.4m.Through the proposed method, the feasibility of automated true orthoimage generation within dense urban areas was confirmed.
In very high-spatial resolution remote sensing imagery, it is difficult to extract the feature information of various objects because of occlusion and shadows. Moreover, various and feeble information within shadows can be of use in GIS-based applications and remote sensing analysis. In this paper, we developed a radiometric restoration method for shadow areas using KOMPSAT-2 satellite image. After detecting the shadow, non-shadow pixels nearby are extracted using a morphological filter. An iterative linear regression method is applied to calculate the relationship between shadow and non-shadow pixels. The shadows are restored by the parameters of the linear regression algorithm. Tests show that recovery of shadowed areas by our method leads to improved image quality.
This paper addresses the use of directional textural information for connecting road segments. In urban scene, some roads are occluded by buildings, casting shadow of buildings, trees, and cars on streets. Automatic extraction of road network from remotely sensed high resolution imagery is generally hindered by them. The results of automatic road network extraction will be incomplete. To overcome this problem, several perceptual grouping algorithms are often used based on similarity, proximity, continuation, and symmetry. Roads have directions and are connected to adjacent roads with certain angles. The directional information is used to guide road fragments connection based on roads directional inertia or characteristics of road junctions. In the primitive stage, roads are extracted with textural and direction information automatically with certain length of linearity. The primitive road fragments are connected based on the directional information to improve the road network. Experimental results show some contribution of this approach for completing road network, specifically in urban area.

In order to geometrically correct high-resolution satellite imagery, the sensor modeling process that restores the geometric relationship between the satellite sensor and the ground surface at the image acquisition time is required. In general, high-resolution satellites provide RPC (Rational Polynomial Coefficient) information, but the vendor-provided RPC includes geometric distortion caused by the position and orientation of the satellite sensor. GCP (Ground Control Point) is generally used to correct the RPC errors. The representative method of acquiring GCP is field survey to obtain accurate ground coordinates. However, it is difficult to find the GCP in the satellite image due to the quality of the image, land cover change, relief displacement, etc. By using image maps acquired from various sensors as reference data, it is possible to automate the collection of GCP through the image matching algorithm. In this study, the RPC of KOMPSAT-3A satellite image was corrected through the extracted matching point using the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehichle) imagery. We propose a pre-porocessing method for the extraction of matching points between the UAV imagery and KOMPSAT-3A satellite image. To this end, the characteristics of matching points extracted by independently applying the SURF (Speeded-Up Robust Features) and the phase correlation, which are representative feature-based matching method and area-based matching method, respectively, were compared. The RPC adjustment parameters were calculated using the matching points extracted through each algorithm. In order to verify the performance and usability of the proposed method, it was compared with the GCP-based RPC correction result. The GCP-based method showed an improvement of correction accuracy by 2.14 pixels for the sample and 5.43 pixelsfor the line compared to the vendor-provided RPC. In the proposed method using SURF and phase correlation methods, the accuracy of sample was improved by 0.83 pixels and 1.49 pixels, and that of line wasimproved by 4.81 pixels and 5.19 pixels, respectively, compared to the vendor-provided RPC. Through the experimental results, the proposed method using the UAV imagery presented the possibility as an alternative to the GCP-based method for the RPC correction.
