Plastic bonded explosive(PBX) is mainly composed of the nitramine-ploymer compositions. PBX is characterized by high velocity and pressure of detonation, low vulnerability and good thermal stability. Many important applications of PBX require the good adhesion between nitramine crystals and the binder. For PBXs as well as propellants, where good mechanical properties are of great importance, dewetting therefore must be prevented by strong adhesion between filler-binder. Adhesion depends on surface characteristics of filler and binder. In order to design for better adhesion, an understanding of the surface properties of explosive and binder is required. The surface free energies are calculated from contact angle values by the method of Kaelble. Critical surface tension of solids are calculated by Zisman plot. Critical surface tension is a useful parameter for characterizing the wettability of solid surface. In this study, HMX and 3 kinds of copolymers are selected, since they are widely used in many plastic bonded explosives. The technical objective of this investigation is to predict the interaction between filler and binder from their surface free energies.

Energetic monomers with new design concept were synthesized for energetic prepolymers. Novel energetic monomers consisted of ring-opening polymerizable oxirane and a molecular explosive moiety instead of small explosophores as energetic functional groups. According to the design concept, glycidyl dinitroazetidine (GDNAZ) and glycidyl nitroazetidinol(GNAZO) energetic monomers were synthesized, respectively, and characterized by NMR, EA and GC MS. Heat of formation and detonation performance were calculated by theoretical method to evaluate energy performance of these novel energetic monomers. The result revealed that GDANZ and GNAZO possessed high potential as new energetic monomers for synthesizing energetic prepolymers and binders in PBXs.
Liquid fuel can be easily exploded and release more energy of detonation than conventional explosives because it has different explosion mechanism. In order to analyze dispersion characteristics of liquid fuel for the safety purpose, two tests are conducted. First, pre-test, which is a computer simulation, is carried out by a software called ANSYS AUTODYN to eliminate the effect of a canister that usually causes irregular dispersion of the fuel. Second, field test is performed to find out the amount and density effect of bursting charge. High speed cameras are installed in front of the canister to visualize the mechanism. Velocity, area and radius of the dispersed cloud are measured by image processing software, these are shown that the amount of bursting charge affects cloud velocity and area but density is not a significant factor of cloud formation.

When the EED is exposed to the high power radiation, it is possible to verify systems survivability through measuring the induced current of EED. The usual method of performing a system level test is to replace the EED's with modified units from which the explosive charge has been removed and replaced with the fiber optic sensor. The thermal transient test was performed to obtain the temperature vs current characteristic curve for optical sensor installed in EED. The currents measured when the system is exposed to a known EME are compared to the proposed specfication about the EED and a decision is made on whether system is safe or not.

Anti-terrorism design for public buildings as well as military facilities is important to minimize the mass casualties from terrorist attacks. Also, well designed glazing and window systems can reduce the potential injury of human caused by scattering fragment of a glazing. In this paper, blast resistant design for glazing and window systems is investigated based on the U.S. Standard. The design procedures include minimum requirements for the design, standard practice for design evaluation of the glazing and standard test method for evaluation of the performance.

Three-dimensional dynamic analysis of underground openings subjected to explosive loadings considering the effects of water saturation is carried out in this study. The problem considered in this study is an unlined circular tunnel subjected to a finite cylindrical charge placed at the center of the proposed tunnel. The surrounding rock mass is assumed to be the limestone with 13.5% of porosity. Two calculations are compared using an identical explosive charge; the first in dry rock of 13.5% porosity, the second in the identical rock, but in a fully saturated condition. It is shown that underground openings in saturated porous medium could be significantly more vulnerable to the potential damages associated with high motions and shear failure than those in dry medium.
Metallic glasses are amorphous meta-stable solids and are now being processed in bulk form suitable for structural applications including impact. Bulk metallic glasses have many unique mechanical properties such as high yield strength and fracture toughness, good corrosion and wear resistance that distinguish them from crystalline metals and alloys. However, only a few studies could be found mentioning the dynamic response and damage of metallic glasses under impact or shock loading. In this study, we employed a small explosive detonator for the dynamic indentation on a Zr-based bulk amorphous metal in order to evaluate the damage behavior of bulk amorphous metal under impact loading. These results were compared with those of spherical indentation under quasi-static and impact loading. The interface bonded specimens were adopted to observe the appearances of subsurface damage induced during indentation under different loading conditions.

We demonstrate the methodology of engineering the multi-component ceramic nanopowder with precise morphology by nanoblast calcinations decomposition of preliminary engineered nanoreactors. Multiple explosions of just melted $C_3H_6N_6O_6$ embedded into preliminary engineered nanoreactors break apart the agglomerates due to the highly energetic impacts of the blast waves. Also, the solid-solubility of one component into the other is enhanced by the extremely high local temperature generated during each nano-explosion in surrounding area. This methodology was applied for production of agglomeratefree nano-aggregates of $Gd_{20}Ce_{80}O_{1.95}$ with an average size of 42 nm and $LaSrGaMgO_{3-x}$ nanopowder with an average aggregate size of 83 nm.

Current research trends of prediction of possible structures, synthesis and explosive characteristics of polynitrogen molecules(PNs) are reviewed. Theoretically PNs are composed only of nitrogen atoms, in which N-N bonds are either single or double bonds, and thus when these molecules decompose, release of enormous energy is accompanied. From the middle of 20th century energetic material chemists have been seeking possible structures and the methods of synthesis of these new materials. As a results, from $N_4$ to $N_{60}$ together with their ions are predicted, and experimental chemists have been trying to synthesize these materials with a few success, including the famous ${N_5}^+$ ion in 1999. Although experimental successes are very rare beyond $N_5$ until today, the author believes that renovative ideas together with sincere efforts will bring someday next generation of high energy materials such as nitrogen fullerene($N_{60}$) in reality.
Concrete undergoes a series of thermo-based physio-chemical changes once exposed to elevated temperatures. Such changes adversely alter the composition of concrete and oftentimes lead to fire-induced explosive spalling. Spalling is a multidimensional, complex and most of all sophisticated phenomenon with the potential to cause significant damage to fire-exposed concrete structures. Despite past and recent research efforts, we continue to be short of a systematic methodology that is able of accurately assessing the tendency of concrete to spall under fire conditions. In order to bridge this knowledge gap, this study explores integrating novel artificial intelligence (AI) techniques; namely, artificial neural network (ANN), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and genetic algorithm (GA), together with traditional statistical analysis (multilinear regression (MLR)), to arrive at state-of-the-art procedures to predict occurrence of fire-induced spalling. Through a comprehensive datadriven examination of actual fire tests, this study demonstrates that AI techniques provide attractive tools capable of predicting fire-induced spalling phenomenon with high precision.
