A theoretical energy-based model to capture the mechanical response of thick woven composite laminates, which are used in such applications as maritime or aerospace, to high-velocity impact was developed. The dependences of the impact phenomenon on material and geometrical parameters were analysed making use of the Vaschy-Buckingham Theorem to provide a non-dimensional framework. The model was divided in three different stages splitting the physical interpretation of the perforation process: a first where different dissipative mechanisms such as compression or shear plugging were considered, a second where a transference of linear momentum was assumed and a third where only friction took place. The model was validated against experimental data along with a 3D finite element model. The numerical simulations were used to validate some of the new hypotheses assumed in the theoretical model to provide a more accurate explanation of the phenomena taking place during a high-velocity impact.

In Li-ion batteries, a thick electrode is advantageous for lowering the inactive current collector portion and obtaining a high energy density. One of the critical failure mechanisms of thick electrodes is inhomogeneous lithiation and delithiation owing to the axial location of the electrode. In this study, it was confirmed that the top layer of the composite electrode contributes more to the charging step owing to the high ionic transport from the electrolyte. A high-loading multilayered electrode containing LiFePO4 (LFP) and LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) was developed to overcome the inhomogeneous electrochemical reactions in the electrode. The electrode laminated with LFP on the top and NCM811 on the bottom showed superior cyclability compared to the electrode having the reverse stacking order or thoroughly mixed. This improvement is attributed to the structural and interfacial stability of LFP on top of the thick electrode in an electrochemically harsh environment.
Dynamic energy balance can give clinicians important answers for why obesity is so resistant to control. When food intake is reduced for weight control, all components of energy expenditure change, including metabolic rate at rest (resting energy expenditure [REE]), metabolic rate of exercise, and adaptive thermogenesis. This means that a change in energy intake influences energy expenditure in a dynamic way. Mechanisms associated with reduction of total energy expenditure following weight loss are likely to be related to decreased body mass and enhanced metabolic efficiency. Reducing calorie intake results in a decrease in body weight, initially with a marked reduction in fat free mass and a decrease in REE, and this change is maintained for several years in a reduced state. Metabolic adaptation, which is not explained by changes in body composition, lasts for more than several years. These are powerful physiological adaptations that induce weight regain. To avoid a typically observed weight-loss and regain trajectory, realistic weight loss goals should be established and maintained for more than 1 year. Using a mathematical model can help clinicians formulate advice about diet control. It is important to emphasize steady efforts for several years to maintain reduced weight over efforts to lose weight. Because obesity is difficult to reverse, clinicians must prioritize obesity prevention. Obesity prevention strategies should have high feasibility, broad population reach, and relatively low cost, especially for young children who have the smallest energy gaps to change.
Metal film type of resistor have been tested to invest maximum usable power at the pulsed high voltage and pulsed high current. Experiments were carried out using capacitor charging power supply and dump switch. Pulsed amplitude were varied from 1kV to 25kV. The peak current reached was 1kA. Datasheet are given for the limited pulsed power and energy for metal film type of resistor in nanosecond and microsecond time range. The experimental investigation of the threshold loading of the resistor in the high current and voltage pulsed mode has shown that the process of destruction of resistor has specific features for each mode. The mechanisms of failure and destruction of resistors under action of high-voltage and high-current pulses are discussed.
Recently, superconducting cable has attracted a great deal of interest from the viewpoint of energy saving, one of the most important and difficult problems to be solved to assure the high reliability, safety and economy of cable is breakdown is cryogenic temperature. In this paper, we will report on the characteristics and mechanisms of the breakdown and creeping discharge in cryogenic liquids, dual role of those as the cooling and insulating material, and composited system of cryogenic liquid - gas taking into consideration for application.
The aim of this study was to evaluate protein expression patterns of liver in response to subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) induced by high-concentrate diet. Sixteen healthy mid-lactating goats were randomly divided into 2 groups and fed either a high-forage (HF) diet or a high-concentrate (HC) diet. The HC diet was expected to induce SARA. After ensuring the occurrence of SARA, liver samples were collected. Proteome analysis with differential in gel electrophoresis technology revealed that, 15 proteins were significantly modulated in liver in a comparison between HF and HC-fed goats. These proteins were found mainly associated with metabolism and energy transfer after identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization/time of flight. The results indicated that glucose, lipid and protein catabolism could be enhanced when SARA occurred. It prompted that glucose, lipid and amine acid in the liver mainly participated in oxidation and energy supply when SARA occurred, which possibly consumed more precursors involved in milk protein and milk fat synthesis. These results suggest new candidate proteins that may contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms that mediate liver adaptation to SARA.

In the adoption of a desalination system the most important factor is the cost of fresh water pro-duction. In general LNG is stored in a tank as a liquid state below $-162^{\circ}C$ When it is serviced however the LNG absorbs energy from a heat source and it is transformed to a high pressure gaseous state. During this process a huge amount of cold energy accumulated in cooling LNG is wasted. This wasted cold energycan be utilized to produce fresh water by using a sea water freez-ing desalination system. in order to develop a sea water freezing desalination system and to estab-lish its design technique qualitative and quantitative data regarding the freezing behavior of sea water is required in advance. The goals of this study are to reveal the freezing mechanisms of sea water in a cooled circular tube to measure the freezing rate and to investigate the freezing heat-transfer characteristics. The experimental results provide a general understanding of sea water freezing behavior in a cooled circular tube.
We propose jitter radiation and jitter self-Compton process in this work. We apply our model to the study of GRB prompt emission and GeV-emission. Our results can explain the multi-wavelength spectrum of GRB 100728A very well.
In this study, we proposed a three-dimensional dynamic model under the diffuse interface description for the single crawling cell. From the developed model, we described the clear evolution processes for crawling neutrophil and assessed the reliable quantitative chemotactic property, which confirmed the high possibility of adequate predictions. To establish the system considering of multiple mechanisms such as, diffusion, chemotaxis, and interaction with surface, a diffuse interface model is employed.
A physical analysis is applied to the measured phenomena of aromatic organic compounds under the uniform electric field of 0.1MV/cm through 1.5MV/cm, when they are irradiated or non-irradiated respectively. Upon the observations about irradiation effects, space charge effects and their temperature dependance, the conditions of lattice defects act conspicuously on electric conductrivity, photo conductivity and dielectric breakdown. Although the qualitative agreement with Frohlich's high energy criterion theory for the above mechanisms is poor, it is concluded that the phenomena of aromatic compounds may possibly be due to the effect of lattice defects or impurity centers generated by .gamma.-ray irradiations.
