Atmospheric Photochemistry in Low-and High-NOx Regimes

  • Atmospheric photochemistry of $O_3-NOx-RH$ were considered theoretically, to clarify the reasons for the different trends of between the formation of photochemical oxidants (Ox) and its primary pollutants for the Low-and High-NOx regimes. Equations of OH, $HO_2$, and production of ozone ($O_3$) as a function of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and reactive hydrocarbons (RH) were represented in this study. For the Low-NOx regime, $HO_2$ radical is proportional to RH but independent of NOx. OH radical is proportional to NOx but inversely-proportional to RH. $O_3$ production is proportional to NOx but has a weak dependence on RH. For the High-NOx regime, OH and $HO_2$ radicals concentrations and $O_3$ production are proportional to RH but inversely-proportional to NOx. In addition, the Osaka Bay and surrounding areas of Japan were evaluated with the mass balance of odd-hydrogen radicals (Odd-H) using CBM-IV photochemical mechanism, in order to distinguish the Low- and High-NOx regimes. The Harima area (emission ratio, RH/NOx = 6.1) was classified to the Low-NOx regime. The Hanshin area (RH/NOx = 3.5) and Osaka area (RH/NOx = 4.3) were classified to the High-NOx regime.

  • This study analyzed characteristics of ozone (O3) formation regimes in Busan over a period of recent five years (2015~2019) and compared the findings with those obtained in Seoul. We employed four observed variations: early morning commuting-hour (i.e., 06:00-09:00 LST) nitrogen dioxide (NO2), peak-hour (i.e., 12:00-16:00 LST) O3, 8-hour average O3 (MDA8 O3), and △O3 (=O3_max- O3_min) in Busan and Seoul. In addition, the NO2-O3 relation was assessed to interpret which of NOx-limited or volatile organic compound (VOC)-limited was dominant. In Busan, the annual mean O3 concentration was relatively higher than in Seoul, whereas there were fewer high-concentration days. The Pearson correlation coefficients (R) between Early morning-hour NO2 and the Peak-hour O3 was positive (but close to zero) in Busan and negative in Seoul. Likewise, the R between the Early morning-hour NO2 and the △O3 showed a relatively considerable positive correlation (R=+0.4~0.5)(R=+0.4~0.5) in Busan, while a weak positive correlation (R=+0.1~0.2) in Seoul. From this result, it can be inferred that the O3 formation regime in Busan was intrepreted to be nearly neutral or relatively closer to the NOx-limited regime than Seoul, while Seoul to the VOC-limited regime. The study findings imply that O3 control strategies should be applied differently in Busan and Seoul. The results here were inferred from surface NO2 and O3 observations, and the varification studies based on in-situ VOCs measurements would be needed.

화력발전소 배출가스 중 질소산화물의 확산에 관한 연구 (Simulation Study of NOx Dispersion from Power Plant Stack Gas)

  • Various efforts have been explored to save the cost in many industrial fields. In order to recover the residual thermal energy from the flue gas, an extreme high efficiency heat exchanger is planning to install at a power plant. The gas temperature will be reduced to $40^{\circ}C$ from $115^{\circ}C$. Thus gas buoyancy decreases, and dispersion of nitrogen oxides is expected to deteriorate as increasing relative humidity. In this study, the conversion of nitrogen monoxide to nitrogen dioxide and dispersion regime are investigated through computational modeling. Nitrogen dioxide which indicates 0.1 ppm at 85 m from the ground could be propagated to 620 m at $115^{\circ}C$ of the flue gas, whilst when cooled down to $40^{\circ}C$, it expands up to 750 m. The ground level influence area showed more expansion of dispersion, approximately to 930 m.

연료유량 변화에 따른 원추형 MILD 연소로의 수치적 해석 (Numerical study of a conical MILD combustor with varing the fuel flow rate)

  • MILD(Moderate and Intense Low Oxygen Dilution) 연소는 열효율 향상과 유해배출가스 저감의 상반된 관계를 해결하기 위한 하나의 각광받는 기술이다. 연소가스의 재순환을 이용하여 고온 연소시에 질소산화물을 낮게 유지함과 동시에 연소로 내부온도를 균일화함으로써 열효율을 향상시킬 수 있는 기술이다. 본 연구는 실험실 규모의 노에서 원추형 MILD 연소기의 연소특성을 나타내고 있다. 연구의 조건은 공기의 유량은 일정하게 하면서 가스 연료 유량을 변화시켜 당량비를 변화시켰다. 이 결과 노 내에서 MILD 연소영역이 잘 구현되었고, 당량비 0.69~0.83의 범위에 걸쳐서 노(爐)내에서의 온도와 배출가스의 농도가 각각 예측되었다. 이 당량비 구간에서 최고화염온도 영역과 주 반응영역에서의 온도차가 약 $300^{\circ}C$의 안정적인 화염 영역의 존재를 확인하였다.

저온연소조건에서 급속압축기를 이용한 n-heptane/n-butanol 혼합연료의 착화지연에 관한 연구 (The investigation on the Ignition Delay of n-heptane/n-butanol Blend Fuel Using a Rapid Compression Machine at Low Temperature Combustion Regime)

  • This study presents both experimental and numerical investigation of ignition delay time of n-heptane and n-butanol binary fuel. The $O_2$ concentration in the mixture was set to 9-10% to make high exhaust gas recirculation( EGR) rate condition which leads low NOx and soot emission. Experiments were performed using a rapid compression machine(RCM) at compressed pressure 20bar, several compressed temperature and three equivalence ratios(0.4, 1.0, 1.5). In addition, a numerical study on the ignition delay time was performed using CHEMKIN codes to validate experimental results and predict chemical species in the combustion process. The results showed that the ignition delay time increased with increasing the n-butanol fraction due to a decrease of oxidation of n-heptane at the low temperature. Moreover, all of the binary fuel mixtures showed the combustion characteristics of n-heptane such as cool flame mode at low temperature and negative-temperature-coefficient(NTC) behavior. Due to the effect of high EGR rate condition, the operating region is reduced at lean condition and the ignition delay time sharply increased compared with no EGR condition.
