  • In order to discriminate the enteroendocrine cell types in the mucosal epithelium of the normal duodenum of the Korean hedgehog (Erinaceus koreanus). The tissues were fixed in the mixture of 1% paraformaldehyde and 1% glutaraldehyde in phosphate buffer (pH 7.2), and postfixed in 2% osmium tetroxide (phosphate buffer, pH 7.2). They were embedded in Araldite, and the ultrathin sections were made by LKB-V ultratome following the inspection of semithin sections stained with toluidine blue-borax solutions. Ultrathin sections contrasted with uranyl acetate and lead citrate were observed with JEM 100B electron microscope. At least six types of enteroendocrine cells distributed in the mucosal epithelium of the duodenum were identified according to their morphological characteristics mainly based on the size, shape, number and electron density of the secretory granules. Type I cells had moderately developed organelles. The secretory granules were pleomorphic ($370X510nm$), and the granule cores with high electron density were enveloped in limiting membrane and characterized by a narrow halo. Type II cells contained an indented nucleus and well-developed organelles. The secretory granules were round (350 nm) and classified in two kinds by electron density, moderate and high. Both granules were surrounded by limiting membrane and those with high electron density showed often a wide halo. Type III cells had an indented nucleus. The secretory granules with various electron density were round (220 nm) in shape. The granules with high electron density were enveloped in limiting membrane and characterized by a narrow halo, but those with low or moderate electron density had not been observed the limiting membrane. Type IV cells contained an indented nucleus and moderately developed organelles. The secretory granules were round (180 nm) in shape, and the granule cores with high electron density were enveloped in limiting membrane and showed often a wide halo. Type V cells had a large amount of rough endoplasmic reticulum. Secretory granules with low or moderate electron density were round (230 nm) in shape, and surrounded by limiting membrane and showed a narrow halo. Type VI cells contained an oval nucleus and well-developed organelles, especially Golgi complex. The secretory granules with high electron density were round (210 nm) in shape. The granules were enveloped in limiting membrane and showed often a wide halo.

  • There are several factors that affect the welfare and meat quality of pigs during pre-slaughter transport. Among various factors, the effects of weather conditions and loading density were studied. A total of 3,726 finishing pigs were allotted to one of nine groups arranged in a 3 × 3 factorial design according to the weather conditions (low temperature [LT], under 10℃; normal temperature [NT], 10℃-24℃; high temperature [HT], upper 24℃), and loading density (low density [LD], upper 0.43 m2/100 kg; normal density [ND], 0.37-0.43 m2/100 kg; high density [HD], under 0.37 m2/100 kg). Each treatment group follow as: LTLD, LTND, LTHD, NTLD, NTND, NTHD, HTLD, HTND, HTHD. In terms of carcass composition, pigs had the highest carcass weight and backfat thickness at LT. Comparing the HD transport to the ND transport, the meat quality indicated a lower pH and more drip loss. The incidence rate of pale, soft, exudative (PSE) pork was high in the order of the HD, LD, and the ND transport (20%, 9%, and 2%, respectively). The HT transport showed the lowest pH and greatest L* value under the given weather conditions. Pigs transported under the HTHD and LTLD conditions had the greatest rates of PSE pork (40% and 20%, respectively). Pigs exposed to HD transport had the shortest laying time and the highest overplap behavior. The LDLT transport pigs had a shorter laying time than the LDNT and LDHT transport pigs. In conclusion, too high or too low density transport is generally not excellent for meat quality or animal welfare, however it is preferable to transport at a slightly low density at high temperature and at a slightly high density at low temperature.

  • An experiment was made in order to analyze the growth characteristics and productivity of Zoysia japonica under control, mowing and TIBA treatment conditions at the experimental farm of Kyung Hee University. The field was planned by the split plot design method and each treatment was given to two plots (40$\times$40 and 100$\times$100 mm) and was replicated three times. Each plot was 9$m^2$ for Zoysia japonica. The sampling of each plot was taken once a week after sowing. In order to know the dry matter of total standing crops, each organ of plants was kept at 9$0^{\circ}C$ and weighed. Total leaf area of a plant was measured by drawing method. The author adopted the growth analysis of English School. Holocellulose analysis by sodium chlorite method was made. The increasing rate of LAI was high in all plots between 10th and 12th week after sowing and high growth rate of assimilatory organ was observed in low density area of TIBA plot. Between 10th and 12th week after sowing all the experimental plots showed high increasing rate of standing crop and in the process of growth each density area of TIBA plot recorded high increasing rate. In all the plots F/C ratio and RGR were high when the growth rate of assimilatory organ was increasing cosiderably, and the higher the planting density was, the higher F/C ratio was recorded. In all the plots NAR recorded maximum rate before the growth period to show a high increase of RGR. In the process of the growth TIBA plot showed high icnreasing rate of NAR. CGR showed high value in high density areas of all the plots and reached its maximum in the 13th week after sowing. Compared to the other experimental areas the low planting density areas of control plot and TIBA plot showed considerable earlier lignification indicating low Holocellulose content in the growth process.

  • The focus of this study was to quantify the thermal stratification and analyze the relationship between the stratification structure and the tributaries to understand flow variations in the Paldang Reservoir. The vertical distribution of the temperature and density gradients, and the depth and thickness of the thermocline were quantitatively calculated using a lake physics tool (rLakeAnalyzer) and high-frequency monitoring data. Based on a density gradient of 0.2 kg/㎥/m, the thermocline was formed from mid-May to early-September 2019 and the other periods were weakly stratified or mixed. The thickness of the thermocline was developed until 4.7 m and the depth of the thermocline was formed at a depth of 3 - 6 m at the front of the Paldang Reservoir. During the formation of the thermocline, the Namhangang and Gyeongancheon tributaries with relatively high water temperature (low-density) flowed into the upper layer of the reservoir, and the Bukhangang tributary with low water temperature (high-density) mainly affected the lower layer of the reservoir. This is because the density currents were formed due to the difference in the water temperature of the tributaries. The findings of this study may be used for constructing high-frequency monitoring and quantitative data analyses of reservoirs.

  • A helical inductively coupled plasma asher, which produces low energy and high density plasma, has been built and investigated for photoresist stripping process. Oxygen ion density in the order of $10^{11}/cm^3$ is measured by Langmuir probe, and higher oxygen radical density is observed by Optical Emission Spectrometer. As RF source power is increased, the plasma density and thus photoresist stripping rate are increased. Independent RF bias power to the wafer stage provides a dc bias to the wafer and an ability to add the ion assisted reaction. At 1 KW of the source power, the coupling mechanism of the RF power to the plasma is changed from the inductive mode to the capacitive one at about 1 Torr. This change causes the plasma density and ashing rate decreases abruptly. The critical pressure of the mode change becomes larger with larger RF power.

  • In this paper, we propose a modified fuzzy clustering algorithm which can overcome the center deviation due to the Euclidean distance commonly used in fuzzy clustering. Among fuzzy clustering methods, Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) is the most well-known clustering algorithm and has been widely applied to various problems successfully. In FCM, however, cluster centers tend leaning to high density clusters because the Euclidean distance measure forces high density cluster to make more contribution to clustering result. Proposed is an enhanced algorithm which modifies the objective function of FCM by adding a center-scattering term to make centers not to be close due to the cluster density. The proposed method converges more to real centers with small number of iterations compared to FCM. All the strengths can be verified with experimental results.

  • Electric double-layer capacitors based on charge storage at the interface between a high surface area activated carbon electrode and an electrolyte solution are characterized by their long cycle-life and high power density in comparison with batteries. However, energy density of electric double-layer capacitors obtained at present is about 6 Wh/kg at a power density of 500W/kg which is smaller as compared with that of batteries and limits the wide spread use of the capacitors. Therefore, a new capacitor that shows larger energy density than that of electric double-layer capacitors is proposed. The new capacitor is the hybrid capacitor consisting of activated carbon cathode, carbonaceous anode and an organic electrolyte. Maximum voltage applicable to the cell is over 4.2V that is larger than that of the electric double-layer capacitor. As a result, discharged energy density on the basis of stacked volume of electrode, current collector and separator is more than 18Wh/l at a power density of 500W/l.

  • The thermal and mechanical properties of compacted bentonite and bentonite-sand mixture were collected from the literatures and compiled. The thermal conductivity of bentonite is found to increase almost linearly with increasing dry density and water content of the bentonite. The specific heat can also be expressed as a function of water ontent, and the coefficient of thermal expansion is almost independent on the dry density. The logarithm of unconfined compressive strength and Young’s modulus of elasticity increase linearly with increasing dry density, and in the case of constant dry density, it can be fitted to a second order polynomial of water content. Also the unconfined compressive strength and Young’s modulus of elasticity of the bentonite-sand mixture decreases with increasing sand content. The Poisson’s ratio remains constant at the dry density higher than 1.6 Mg/m$_3$, and the shear strength increases with increasing dry density.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to -retrospectively describe the childhood sports activity level of Korean adult men and women and to determine whether a higher level of childhood sports activity was positively associated with adult bone mineral density. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 100 Korean men (n=40) and women (n=60) was completed. Participants completed a detailed lifetime sports activity questionnaire and had their bone mineral density of the femur and lumbar spine measured using dual energy x-ray densitometry (DEXA). All sports activities were classified into four categories of peak strain score on the basis of ground reaction forces (GRF). Results: During the age of high school, women and men who participated in a high intensity sports activity demonstrated higher bone density in the femur site after adjustment for the effects of body weight, fat body mass, lean body mass, the level of calcium intake, and breast feeding period than those who did not participate in sports activity at all. Conclusion: These results highlight the need to participate in high intensity sports activity during high school age as a means of increasing peak bone mass in the femur site.

  • An inductively coupled plasma source was prepared for the deposition of a-C:H thin film. Properties of the inductively coupled plasma source are investigated by fluid simulation including Navier-Stokes equations and home-made tuned single Langmuir probe. Signal attenuation ratios of the Langmuir probe harmonic frequency were 13.56Mhz and 27.12Mhz. Dependencies of plasma parameters on process parameters were accord with simulation results. Ar/CH4 plasma simulation results shown that hydrocarbon radical densities have their lowest value at the vicinity of gas feeding line due to high flow velocity. For input power density of 0.07W/cm3, CH radical density qualitatively follows electron density distribution. On the other hand, central region of the chamber become deficient in CH3 radical due to high dissociation rate accompanied with high electron density. The result suggest that optimization of discharge power is important for controlling deposition film quality in high density plasma sources.
