  • In this paper, fluid-structure of interaction behavior of a fluid-filled cylindrical polymer container impacted by a high speed spherical projectile was studied using ALE(Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) method. The hydrodynamic ram phenomenon occurred by the impact projectile penetrating through the container was investigated by examining time histories of projectile velocity and fluid pressure and density. The analysis results were agreed reasonably well compared to those by experiments.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the impact resistant performance of steel short fiber-reinforced cement based composites (SFRCCs) containing 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0% volume fraction of steel short fibers subjected to high velocity impact of steel projectile (the diameter of 19.05mm and the mass of 28.13g). The gunpowder impact facility was used for impact tests, and the impact velocity was from about 350 to 700m/s. The specimens were damaged in various failure modes, which are penetration, scabbing, and perforation. Comparing with Plain specimen, SFRCCs have superior capacity on the scabbing limit, and slightly bulged in the back side under the impact velocity of 700m/s. In addition, the impact resistant performance of SFRCCs improved with increase of steel short fiber volume ratio. The fibers play an important role in controlling the local damage of SFRCCs.

  • Rifling force has a torsion impulse effect on the gun tube and thus generates undesirable vibration of the gun tube about its bore axis, putting additional stress on the projectile. High rifling force at the muzzle of the gun tube may adversely influence the trajectory of the projectile. And, the service life of rifled gun barrels is known to depend on the rifling force. Rifling force along the path of the projectile in the longitudinal direction of the gun tube can be described with projectile mass, projectile velocity, gas pressure curve and rifling angle. Under the same conditions, the character of the rifling of the gun barrel decisively influences the rifling force curve. To reduce the above mentioned harmful effect, locally distinct maximum of rifling force has to be avoided and maximum rifling force needs to be minimized. The best way to minimize the maximum rifling force is to design a rifling angle function so that the rifling force curve has a near trapezoidal shape. In this paper a new approach to make the optimal rifling force curve is described. The rifling angle determining the rifling force is developed by combined Fourier series and polynomial function to satisfy both the convergence and boundary condition matching problems.

  • In this study, the numerical simulation using AUTODYN-3D program was investigated angle trajectory prediction for inclined impacts of projectiles. The penetration and perforation of polycarbonate plate by 7.62 mm projectile was investigated numerically. The characteristic structure of the projectile's trajectory in the polycabonate plates was studied. Two combined failure criteria were used in the target plate, and the target plate was modeled with the properties of polycarbonate for simulating the ricochet phenomenon. The effect of the angle of inclination on the trajectory and kinetic energy of the projectile were studied. The dynamic deformation behaviors tests of polycabonate were compared with numerical simulation results which can be used as predictive purpose. From the simulation, the ricochet phenomenon was occurred for angles of inclination of $0^{\circ}{\leq}{\theta}{\leq}20^{\circ}$. The projectile perforated the plate for ${\theta}{\leq}30^{\circ}$, thus defining a failure envelope for numerical configuration. The numerical analyses are used to study the effect of the projectile impact velocity on the depth of penetration (DOP). It can be observed that the residual velocities were almost linear relative to penetration velocities. It means that polycarbonate has high resistance at higher velocities.

  • In order to investigate the fracture behaviors(penetration modes) and resistance to penetration during ballistic impact of Titanium alloy laminates and nitrified Titanium alloy laminates which were treated by PVD(Physical Vapor Deposition) method, ballistic tests were conducted. Evaporation, sputtering, and ion plating are three kinds of PVD method. In this research, Ion plating was used to achieve higher surface hardness and surface hardness test were conducted using a Micro vicker's hardness tester. Resistance to penetration is determined by the protection ballistic limit($V_{50}$), a statistical velocity with 50% probability for complete penetration. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, are respectfully observed at and above ballistic limit velocities, as a result of $V_{50}$ test and Projectile Through Plates (PTP) test methods. PTP tests were conducted with $0^{\circ}$ obliquity at room temperature using 5.56mm ball projectile. $V_{50}$ test with $0^{\circ}$ obliquity at room temperature were conducted with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during PTP tests. Surface hardness, resistance to penetration, and penetration modes of Titanium alloy laminates are compared to those of nitrified Titanium alloy laminates.

  • Penetrator with enhanced lateral effect(PELE) is a newconcept projectile, without dynamite and fuze. It consists of high-density jacket, closed at its rear end and filled with a low-density filling material. To study the explosion characteristics of PELE, by AUTODYN-3D code, the calculation models of projectile body and bullet target are established and the process of penetrating aluminum-2024 alloy target of PELE is simulated, and the scattering characteristics after penetrating aluminum-2024 alloy target of PELE are studied by different initial velocity. The explicit finite element analysis of PELE fragmentation was implemented with stochastic failure criterion in AUTODYN-3D code. As expansion of filling, the fragments were obtained velocities and dispersed laterally and further more enhancing the damage area largely. The number and shape of the PELE fragments were different depend on impact velocity and incidence angle of filling which fragment generated during penetration and lateral dispersion process.

  • In this study, an attempt has been made to investigate the water-entry characteristics of the high-speed parallel projectile numerically. The shear stress transport k-𝜔 turbulence model and the Zwart-Gerber-Belamri cavitation model based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes method were used. The grid independent inspection and grid convergence index is carried out and verified. The influences of the parallel water-entry on flow filed characteristics, trajectory stability and drag reduction performance for different values of initial water-entry speed (𝜈0 = 280 m/s, 340 m/s, 400 m/s) and clearance between the parallel projectiles (Lp = 0.5D, 1.0D, 2.0D, 3.0D) are presented and analyzed in detail. Under the condition of the parallel water-entry, it can be found that due to the intense interference between the parallel projectiles, the distribution of cavity is non-uniform and part of the projectile is exposed to water, resulting in the destruction of the cavity structure and the decline of trajectory stability. In addition, the parallel projectile suffers more severe lateral force that separates the two projectiles. The drag reduction performance is impacted and the velocity attenuation is accelerated as the clearance between the parallel projectiles reduces.

  • Cement composites subjected to high-velocity projectile shows local failure and it can be suppressed by improvement of flexural toughness with reinforcement of fiber. Therefore, researches on impact resistance performance of cement composites are in progress and a number of types of fiber reinforcement are being developed. Since bonding properties of fiber with matrix, specific surface area and numbers of fiber are different by fiber reinforcement type, mechanical properties of fiber reinforced cement composites and improvement of impact resistance performance need to be considered. In this study, improvement of flexural toughness and failure reduction effect by impact of high-velocity projectile have been evaluated according to fiber type by mixing steel fiber, polyamide, nylon and polyethylene which are have different shape and mechanical properties. As results, flexural toughness was improved by redistribution of stress and crack prevention with bridge effect of reinforced fibers, and scabbing by high-velocity impact was suppressed. Since it is possible to decrease scabbing limit thickness from impact energy, thickness can be thinner when it is applied to protection. Scabbing of steel fiber reinforced cement composites was occurred and it was observed that desquamation of partial fragment was suppressed by adhesion between fiber and matrix. Scabbing by high-velocity impact of synthetic fiber reinforced cement composites was decreased by microcrack, impact wave neutralization and energy dispersion with a large number of fibers.
