  • Fusion power shutdown system (FPSS) is a safety system to stop plasma in case of accidents or incidents. The gas injection system for the FPSS presented in this work is designed to research the flow development in a closed system. As the efficiency of the system is a crucial property, plenty of experiments are executed to get optimum parameters. In this system, the flow is driven by the pressure difference between a gas storage tank and a vacuum vessel with a source pressure. The idea is based on a constant volume system without extra source gases to guarantee rapid response and high throughput. Among them, valves and gas species are studied because their properties could influence the velocity of the fluid field. Then source pressures and volumes are emphasized to investigate the volume flow rate of the injection. The source pressure has a considerable effect on the injected volume. From the data, proper parameters are extracted to achieve the best performance of the FPSS. Finally, experimental results are used as a quantitative benchmark for simulations which can add our understanding of the inner gas flow in the pipeline. In generally, there is a good consistency and the obtained correlations will be applied in further study and design for the FPSS.

  • This paper describes the macroscopic behavior and atomization characteristics of the high-pressure gasoline swirl injector in direct-injection gasoline engine. The global spray behavior of fuel injector was visualized by shadowgraph technique. The atomization characteristics of gasoline spray such as mean diameter and mean velocity of droplets were measured by the phase Doppler particle analyzer system. The macroscopic visualization and experiment of particle measurement on the fuel spray were investigated at 7 and 10 MPa of injection pressure under different spray cone angle. The results of this work show that the geometry of injector was more dominant over the macroscopic characteristics of spray than the fuel injection pressure and injection duration. As for the atomization characteristics, the increase of injection pressure resulted in the decrease of fuel droplet diameter and the atomization characteristics differed as to the spray cone angle. The most droplets had under $25{\mu}m$ diameter and for the large droplets(upper $40{\mu}m$) as the spray grew the atomization presses were very slow. Comparison results between the measured droplet distribution and the droplet distribution functions revealed that the measured droplet distribution is very closed to the Normal distribution function and Nukiyama-Tanasawa's function.

  • The effects of the internal flow in a diesel injection nozzle on the atomization of the spray has been investigated experimentally. Flow visualization was made using a transparent acrylic model nozzle. And also, measurement of the sac chamber pressure was made for clartfying the effect of pressure fluctuation in the sac chamber on the wpray behaviors. The geometry of the model nozzle was scaled up 10 times of the actual nozzle and the injection pressure for the model nozzle was adjusted so as to achieve a Reynolds number at the discharge hole which was the same as the actual nozzle. Polystyrene tracers, a laser sheet light and a still/high speed video camera were used to visualize the flow pattern in the sac chamber. When the needle lift was small, the high turbulence in the sac chamber generated by the high velocity seat flow made the spread angle of the spray large. Cavitation which arose in the sky chamber induced the pressure fluctuation and then affects the spread angle of the spray.

  • In order to verify the durability of the high-pressure hydrogen tank in the operating pressure range, a hydraulic rupture test should be performed. However, if the bubbles generated by the initial injection process of water are attached to the inner wall of the tank and remain, a sudden pressure change of the bubbles during the rupture of the pressurized tank may cause shock and noise. Therefore, in this study, the flow velocity required to remove the bubbles remaining on the inner wall of the tank was predicted through simplified formulas, and the shape of the injection nozzle to maintain the flow velocity was determined based on the shape of the hydrogen tank for the hydrogen bus. In addition, a numerical model was developed to predict the change in flow velocity according to the inlet pressure, and an experiment was performed through a model tank to prove the validity of the prediction result. As a result of the experiment, the flow velocity near the tank wall was similar to the predicted value of the analysis model, and when the inlet pressure was 1.5 to 5.5 bar, the minimum size of the removable bubble was predicted to be about 2.2 to 4.6 mm.

  • This study aimed to analyze spray characteristics and the ambient flow field in the mixture preparation state of the premixed combustion stage. It is very important to understand the spray characteristics and the fuel injection conditions in direct injection diesel engine because the emission gas compositions from diesel engines are related to spray formation processes of the premixed combustion stage. The numerical simulation was performed using the STAR-CD which is a commercial CFD code. Computed results of the transient high pressure diesel spray were compared with experimental results of the same spray injection condition in the constant volume chamber. The results show that spray patterns of numerical simulation agree with this experimental results comparatively.

  • Squeeze casting has advantages to improve mechanical properties of nonferrous castings without losing high productivity. Sound pore free structure makes it possible to be subjected to heat treatment and welding. This process became popular to produce lighter automobile parts alternating cast iron parts. It has, however, two disadvantages of segregation and scattered structure due to the solidified layers in sleeve. In this study segregation behavior of squeeze cast Al-7%Si-0.3%Mg alloy bars was investigated using HVSC machine under various injection conditions. Degree of segregation decreased with injection pressure and effect of injection velocity on it was small. Segregation mode of solute was strongly governed by solidification mode and flow pattern.

  • Drop size is one of the most important parameters which are control the performance of the engine using liquid fuel/oxidizer and drop formation is mainly controlled by aerodynamic force caused by ambient gas. Because of this, empirical data and correlation acquired under standard ambient condition are not valid. So experiments under high ambient pressure condition to measure the drop size using image processing method And find the empirical correlation between SMD and chamber pressure(density), injection velocity.

  • This study has focused on manufacturing technique of powder injection molding of watch case which made from zirconia powder. A series of computer simulation process was applied to prediction of the flow pattern in the inside of the mould and defects as weld line. The material properties of melted feedstock inclusive of the PVT graph and thermal viscosity flowage properties were measured for obtaining the input data in computer simulation. Also, molding experiment was conducted and the results of experiment showed that good agreement with simulation results far flow pattern and weld line location. On the other hand, gravity and inertia effect have an influence on velocity of melt front because of high density of ceramic powder particles in powder injection molding against the polymer injection molding process. In the experiment, the position of melt front was compared with upper gate and lower gate position. The gravity and inertia effect could be confirmed in the experimental results.

  • It is well known to diesel engineers that the heat release pattern is one of the most important factors affecting engine performance. Thorough research in heat release pattern has materially helped the progress in high-speed diesel engine development . This paper is based on the research conducted at KAIST and Daewoo Heavy Industry last year. The purpose of this paper is to determine the heat release pattern in combustion chamber of MAN M type, the famous low-noise engine. Thermodynamic cycle simulation was performed using Whitehous-Way's heat release pattern with modified coefficients and Annand's heat transfer model. Instantaneous temperature and pressure of gas in cylinder could be determined by the numerical solution of simultaneous equation of mass conservation, equation of energy conservation, and state equation of ideal gas. Calculated results were compared with measured values in some details emphasizing upon the factors affecting rate of heat release. The agreement was fairly good and revealed why M type should have lower burning velocity at the early part of combustion in spite of high injection rate. Additional results by parametric studies were given in relation to fuel injection conditions for further application to engine development.

  • Spray calculation has been studied to understand the behavior of the spray in a combustion chamber But the spray dispersion has not been predicted properly in a high velocity injection spray or a wall impaction spray. In this study the extended grazing collision model is applied to improve the problem. The gas phase is modelled by the Eulerian continuum conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy and fuel vapour fraction. The liquid phase is modelled following the discrete droplet model approach in Lagrangian form. The droplet distributions, penetration, width and gas flows are compared for the cases with or without extended model. The extended collision model makes the results better.
