  • Recently, PTFE-polymide composites are being used self-lubricating parts for industrial field. Thus, this study is mainly concerned with friction and wear properties for the piston ring of non-lubricating air compressor which made of PTFE-polymide composites. The friction and wear test was carried out for the different composition ratio under the atomsphere room temperature and constant load of 7.69N and their friction and wear properties were compared with each other at various sliding speed. notable results are summarized as follows. PTFE 100% showed that friction coefficient was almost same values at 0.94 and 1.88m/s but the value was decreased at 2.83m/s because the friction temperature is higher than low speed. PTFE 80%-PI 20% showed the lowest mean friction coefficient at 2.83m/s. PTFE 20-PI 80% showed the highest friction coefficient at 0.94m/s and the value was decreased at high speed but the value is higher than other materials except PTFE 100 %. PI 100% showed the highest friction coefficient at 0.94 and 1.88m/s becuase adhesive wear mainly occurred that speed. PTFE 100% showed highest specific wear rate on the whole. Specific wear rate of PTFE 80%-PI 20% was almost the same value with PTFE 20%-PI80%. PI 100%showed the lowest value at high sliding speed because the friction surface was thicken and carbonated by high friction temperature.

  • PTFE has good mechanical and chemical stability at wide temperature range, and more over, shows a low value of friction coefficient. On the other hand, it shows cold flow and high wear rate. However, these short comings can be overcome by adding various fillers. In this experiment, PTFE and polyimide powder were mixed into composite and its tribological characteristics was investigated. 100% polyimide was also tested for comparison. The countefface material was a stainless steel (SUS304). Friction and wear tester of ring-on-block type was used at room temperature and under atmosphere. After the wear test, the worn surfaces were examined by optical microscope. The test results show that PTFE-polyimide composite generates. the wear transfer film on both sides of the friction surfaces, and, the friction coefficient and the wear rates are relatively low. 100% polyimide generated little wear transfer films, showed high friction and wear rates, and also showed some problems of vibration and noise. It even damaged the stainless steel countefface. It was concluded that 100% polyimide does not generate transfer film well because its shear resistanbe is high and it stickslips, thus, friction coefficients and wear rates are high. In case of PTFE-polyimide composite, on the other hand, transfer film containing sufficient PTFE adheres and remains on both wear surfaces well enough because PTFE has low shear resistance. Polyimide particles in the composite were proved to be able to bear normal load and does not show stick-slip because they are covered with transfer film containing much PTFE.

  • High velocity of oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermal spray coating is progressively replacing the other classical hard coatings such as chrome plating and ceramic coating by the classical methods, since the very toxic $Cr^{6+}$ ion is well known as carcinogen causing lung cancer, and the ceramic coatings are brittle. Co-alloy T800 powder is coated on the Inconel 718 substrates by the HVOF coating procesess developed by this laboratory. For the study of the possibility of replacing of chrome plating, the wear properties of HVOF Co-alloy T800 coatings are investigated using the reciprocating sliding tester with a counter sliding SUS 304 ball both at room and at an elevated temperature of $1000^{\circ}F\;(538^{\circ}C)$. The possibility as durability improvement coating is studied for the application to the high speed spindles vulnerable to frictional heat and wear. Wear mechanisms at the reciprocating sliding wear test are studied far the application to the systems similar to the sliding test such as high speed spindles. Wear debris and frictional coefficients of T800 coatings both at room and at an elevated temperature of $538^{\circ}C$ are drastically reduced compared to those of non-coated surface of Inconel 718 substrates. Wear traces and friction coefficients of both coated and non-coated surfaces are drastically reduced at a high temperature of $538^{\circ}C$ compared with those at room temperature. These show that the coating is highly recommendable far the durability Improvement coating on the surfaces vulnerable to frictional heat and wear.

  • The thermal fatigue and wear properties of high speed steel roll which was recently developed were investigated by observing microstructure, by measuring mechanical and physical properties, by conducting thermal fatigue testing, and by measuring the amount of wear in actual mill. High speed steel roll had better thermal fatigue testing, and by measuring the amount of wear in actual mill. High speed steel roll had better thermal fatigue life than high chromium iron roll, which was due to lower carbide content, higher strength, and higher thermal conductivity. The amount of wear of high speed steel roll was nearly the same as that of high chromium iron roll in the first finishing stand, which was due to the oxide formation on the roll surface. However, in the third finishing stand, the wear resistance of high speed steel roll was 2~3 times as good as that of high chromium iron roll because the former had higher hardness at high temperature.

  • Wear and friction behavior of plasma-sprayed coatings in Mo- and Co-based alloy were studied for the application of piston-ring automobile engine. The plasma-sprayed coatings were varied with gun current density, gas flow, and distance. The surface roughness, microhardness, and wear volume were measured depending on the spray distances. The high temperature hardness value were also measured as a function of temperature. Ball-on-disc geometry configuration tribometer was utilized in air. The wear tests were performed in the temperature ranges from room temperature to 825$^{\circ}$C to investigate the tribological trend of the piston-ring materials in the lack of lubricant. The cross sections of wear track were investigated, using microscopy.

  • A sliding friction and wear test for silicon nitride (Si,N4) was conducted using a ball-on-disk specimen configuration. The material used in this study was HIPed silicon nitride. The tests were carried out from room temperature to 1000$^{\circ}C$ using self-mated silicon nitride couples in laboratory air. The worn surfaces were observed by SEM and the debris particles from the worn surfaces were analyzed for oxidation by XPS. The normal load was found to have a more significant influence on the friction coefficient of the silicon nitride than an elevated temperature. The specific wear rate was found to decrease along with the sliding distance. The specific wear rate at 29.4 N and 1000$^{\circ}C$ was 292 times larger than that at room temperature. The main wear mechanism from room temperature to 750$^{\circ}C$ was caused by brittle fracture whereas from 750$^{\circ}C$ to 1000$^{\circ}C$ the wear mechanism was mainly influenced by the oxidation of silicon nitride due to the increased temperature. The oxidation of silicon nitride at a high temperature was a significant factor in the wear increase.

  • Experimental frictional and wear characteristics of silicon graphite materials is studied in this paper. Those specimens are lubricated with high temperature and highly pressurized water to simulate the same operating condition for the journal bearing and the thrust bearing on the main coolant pump bearing in the newly developing nuclear reactor named SMART(System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor). Operating condition of the bearings is realized by the tribometer and the autoclave. Friction coefficient and wear loss are analyzed to choose the best silicon graphite material. Pin on plate test specimens are used and coned disk springs are used to control the applied force on the specimens. Wear loss ana wear width are measured by a precision balance and a micrometer. The friction force is measured by the strain gauge which can be used under high temperature and high pressure. Three kinds of silicon graphite materials are examined and compared with each other, and each material shows similar but different results on frictional and wear characteristics.

  • In nuclear power steam generators, high flow rates can induce vibration of the tubes resulting in fretting wear damage due to contacts between the tubes and their supports. In this paper the fretting wear tests and the sliding wear tests were performed using the steam generator tube materials of Inconel 690 against STS 304. Sliding tests with the pin-on-disk type tribometer were done under various applied loads and sliding speeds at air and water environment. Fretting tests were done under various vibrating amplitudes, applied normal loads and various temperatures. From the results of sliding and fretting wear tests, the wear of Inconel 690 can be predictable using the work rate model. Depending on normal loads and vibrating amplitudes, distinctively different wear mechanisms and often drastically different wear rates can occur. At room temperature, the wear coefficient K of Inconel 690 is 7.57${\times}$10$\^$13/Pa$\^$1/ in air and it is 1.93${\times}$10$\^$13/Pa$\^$1/ in water. At room temperature, it is found that the wear volume in air is more than in water. In water, the wear coefficient K at 50$^{\circ}C$ and 80$^{\circ}C$ is 4.35${\times}$10$\^$-13/Pa$^1$ and 5.81${\times}$10$\^$-13/Pa$^1$ respectively, Therefore, it is found that the wear volume extremely increases by increasing on temperature in water. This study shows that the dissolved oxygen with temperature increment increases and the wear due to fluidity is severe.
