  • Objectives : In this study, following the cavity restorations with low copper conventional alloy, high copper admixed one and high copper unicompositional one, which are used the most frequently in a clinical setting at the present, to experiment the time-dependent changes of strength, bubbles were examined. Besides, to examine the detrimental effects of mercury contained in dental amalgam, the amount of mercury release was evaluated. Methods : As dental amalgams which were used herein, [BESTALOY], [Hi-Aristaloy 21] and [Sybraloy] were selected for a low-copper conventional amalgam, a high-copper admixed one and a high-copper unicompositional one in the corresponding order. The formation of bubbles and the weight ratio of mercury release were evaluated using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Thus, the following results were obtained: Results : 1. The time-dependent amount of mercury release reached a statistical significance in three types of alloys, which was shown in such a descending order as [BESTALOY], [Hi-Aristaloy 21] and [Sybraloy]. 2. A low-copper conventional type, BESTALOY is a cutting type and it was found to have an increased formation of fine bubbles. In the remaining two types, [Hi-Aristaloy 21] (a high-copper admixed alloy) and [Sybraloy] (a high-copper unicompositional alloy), the time-dependent changes in the formation of bubbles was negligible. Conclusions : Accordingly, this type of mercury release from amalgam alloy denotes the difference in the weight ratio of total constituents between after 24 hours and after two weeks. But further studies are warranted to examine the amount of mercury release which is detrimental to human bodies. Besides, a low-copper conventional alloy is a cutting type and it was characterized by the abundant formation of bubbles in a time-dependent manner. This implies that the strength of amalgam is impaired, which should be considered in selecting the appropriate amalgam alloy in a clinical setting.

  • This study looked at high performance copper-based alloys as LED lead frame materials with higher electrical-conductivity and the maintenance of superior tensile strength. This study investigated the effects on the tensile strength, electrical conductivity, thermal softening, size and distribution of the precipitation phases when Cr was added in Cu-Fe alloy in order to satisfy characteristics for LED Lead Frame material. Strips of the alloys were produced by casting and then properly treated to achieve a thickness of 0.25 mm by hot-rolling, scalping, and cold-rolling; mechanical properties such as tensile strength, hardness and electrical-conductivity were determined and compared. To determine precipitates in alloy that affect hardness and electrical-conductivity, electron microscope testing was also performed. Cr showed the effect of precipitation hardened with a $Cr_3Si$ precipitation phase. As a result of this experiment, appropriate aging temperature and time have been determined and we have developed a copper-based alloy with high tensile strength and electrical-conductivity. This alloy has the possibility for use as a substitution material for the LED Lead Frame of Cu alloy.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of copper and copper-alloy on the frictional and wear properties of low-steel friction material. The proportions of copper and copper-alloy in the brake friction materials used in passenger cars are very high (approximately 5-20% weight), and these materials have significant effects on friction and wear characteristics. In this study, the effects of cupric ingredients, such as the copper fiber and brass fiber, are investigated using the friction materials based on commercial formulations. After the copper and brass fibers from the same formulation were removed, the frictional and wear characteristics were evaluated to determine the influence of the copper and copper-alloy. We evaluated the frictional and wear characteristics by simulating various braking conditions using a 1/5 scale dynamometer. The results show that the friction material containing copper and brass fibers have excellent frictional stability and a low wear rate compared to the friction material that does not contain copper and brass fibers. These results are attributed to the excellent ductility, moderate melting point, high strength, and excellent thermal conductivity of copper and copper-alloy. We analyzed the surfaces of the friction materials before and after the performing the friction tests using a scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope, confocal microscope, and roughness tester to verify the frictional behavior of copper and copper-alloy. In future studies, it will be applied to the development of copper-free friction materials based on the results of this study.

  • Copper and its alloy had been used widely because of its pronouncing characteristics on their high thermal and electrical conductivity. Various fusion welding methods, such as SMAW, SAW, GTAW, GMAW, Electroslag welding amd so on are applied to weld copper and its alloy. But fusion welding of copper has so many welding problems. THe most serious problems were poor penetration amd high thermal contration stress due to its high thermal conductivity and porosity could be formed by rapid cooling rate of fusion welding. In order to avoid such fusion welding problems, preheating, peering and heat treatment must be applied to obtain sound weld joint of copper. But preheating induce another welding problem such as grain coarsening of weld heat affected zone. This grain coarsening reduces ductility and strength of weld joint. In this view of point, friction welding of copper is triedm to obtain sound weld joint of copper by reducing metallurgical problems. This study introduced new concept of heat input for evaluating the friction weldability of copper. As a result, weldability of copper could be evaluated by this new concept of heat input.

  • To observe the bonding behavior of palladium-based alloys to porcelain; 1. Pd-Co binary alloy with the higher cobalt content, 2. Pd-Co binary alloy with the lower cobalt content, 3. Pd-Ag-Sn ternary alloy, 4. Pd-Ag binary alloy, 5. Pd-Cu-Au ternary alloy and 6. Pd-Cu binary alloy were made as 6 groups of experimental alloys. Each group of alloy was divided into 4 sub-groups such as one sub-group that was not degassed and three sub-groups that degassed for 5 minutes, 10 minutes and 15 minutes. On each specimen, weight changes after degassing, morphological changes of oxide layer by changing the degassing time, compositional changes at metal-ceramic interface and bond strength of metal-ceramic measured with planar shear test were observed and compared. The results of the present study allow the following conclusions to be drawn: 1. The alloy showing the greatest bond strength was Pd-Cu alloy without gold and bond strength was decreased by alloying gold to them. 2. Although Pd-Co alloy showed the most prominent oxidation behavior, bond strength of them to porcelain was not greatly high by the formation of porosities at metal-ceramic interfaces. 3. Likewise tin, cobalt formed the peaks on line profiles at metal-ceramic interface, however copper did not exhibit such peaks on line profiles. 4. Mainly, oxide layer on Pd-Co alloy was composed with cobalt, and for Pd-Co alloy with higher cobalt content the rise of bond strength was not significant by increased degassing time. 5. On Pd-Ag alloy not containing tin, during degassing for 15 minutes silver content was increased at metal-ceramic interface. 6. As an oxidized element, tin formed the oxide layers that widen their area by increasing the degassing time, while cobalt and copper showed the morphological changes of particle or crystal on oxide layer.

  • In this paper, joints of Cu-1Cr-0.1Zr alloy to STS316L were performed by friction welding method. Particularly, Cu-1Cr-0.1Zr alloy is attractive candidate as nuclear power plant material and exibit the best combination of high strength and good electrical and thermal conductivity of any copper alloy examined. The stainless steel is a structural material while copper alloy acts as a heat sink material for the surface heat flux in the first wall. So, in this paper, not only the development of optimizing of friction welding with more reliability and more applicability but also the development of in-process real-time weld quality (such as strength and toughness) evaluation technique by acoustic emission for friction welding of such nuclear reactor component of Cu-1Cr-0.1Zr alloy to STS316L steel sere performed.
