Recently high speed machining is being studied actively to reduce machining time and to improve machining precision. To perform efficient high speed machining, evaluation of high speed machinability must be studied preferentially and it can be identified by investigation of cutting force. To measure cutting forces in high speed machining, dynamometer which has high natural frequency was newly designed using 3-axes piezo force sensor. For newly designed dynamometer, calibration is conducted with sensitivity of force sensor modulated and proper preload and interference force are investigated experimently. Also, cutting force signals of newly designed dynamometer are compared with those of conventional one in high speed cutting experiment and its superiority is confirmed. Then using newly designed dynamometer, high speed machinability is evaluated about cutting force and tool wear in various cutting conditions.
The purpose of this study is to suggest how the machining technique of constant control of cutting speed can improve precision machining and tool life in high speed machining using a ball end mill. Cutting speed is changed in machining fee form surfaces such as connecting rod die. So, we don't have supreme surface form and tool life on machining. To solve this problem we should settle on optimal cutting speeds in free form surface machining. And, to improve precision machining, We must execute high speed machining methods to output optimum NC data using developed constant control of cutting speed program after modeling by CAD/CAM. In this paper, a comparison was made of the cutting precision and tool life in conventional cutting and those in connecting rod machining applying the program developed.
In metal cutting at the tool-chip interface, friction generates considerable amount of heat. Thus, the knowledge of wear properties of cutting tool material in high temperature has been as one of important factors in need of clarification. The authors presented the wear properties of 5%Co-5%V-1%Nb high speed steel, fabricated by powder metallurgy, in room temperature in previous articles. The objective of this paper is to clarify the effects of temperature on its wear properties. Wear tests in sliding conditions under various temperatures have been conducted using the pin-on-disc type wear test machine. The results indicate that the wear properties of 5%Co-5%V-1%Nb high speed steel in high temperature as well as in room temperature are excellent. It may be deduced that the oxide layer formed on worn surface at high temperature is stable enough to prevent wear due to the high temperature strength of its matrix.
High speed milling process is emerging as an important fabrication process benefits include the ability to fabricate micro and meso-scale parts out of a greater range of materials and with more varied geometry. It also enables the creation of micro and meso-scale molds for injection molding. Factors affecting surface roughness have not been studied in depth for this process. A series of experiments has been conducted in order to begin to characterize the factors affecting surface roughness and determine the range of attainable surface roughness values for the high speed milling process. It has previously been shown that run-out creates a greater problem for the dimensional accuracy of parts created by high speed milling process. And run-out also has a more significant effect on the surface quality of milled parts. The surface roughness traces reveal large peak to valley variations. This run-out is generated by spindle dynamics and tool geometry. In order to investigate the relationship between tool setting errors and surface roughness end tilted mills were used to cut aluminum samples. The results indicate that tool setting errors have significant effects on surface roughness and cutting forces.
High speed machining(HSM) technique is widely used in the appliance, automobile part and mold industries, which has many advantages such as good quality, low cost and rapid machining time. but it also has problems like tool break, smooth tool path, and so on. In particular, small size end mill is easy to break, so it must be changed before interrupting operation. Generally, the tool life of small size end mill is effected by the milling conditions whose evaluated parameters are spindle, feedrate, and width of cut. The experiments are carried out by full factorial design of experiments using and orthogonal array. This paper shows optimal combination and mathematical model for tool life, and the analysis of variance(ANOVA) is employed to analyze the main effects and the interactions of these milling parameters and the second-order polynomial regression model with three independent variables is estimated to predict tool life by multiple regression analysis.

High speed machining (HSM), specifically end milling and ball end cutting, is attracting interest in the die/mold or aerospace industries for the machining of complex 3D surfaces. HSM of difficult-to-cut materials such as die/mold steels, titanium alloys or nickel based superalloys generates the concentrated thermal/frictional damage at the cutting edge of the tool and rapidly decreases the tool life. Following a brief introduction on HSM and reated aerospace or die/mold work, the paper reviews published data on the effect of cutter/workpiece orientation and cutting environments on tool performance. First, experimental work is detailed on the effect of cutter orientation on tool life, cutting forces, chip formation, specific force and workpiece surface roughness. Cutting was performed using 8 mm diameter PVD coated solid carbide cutters with the workpiece mounted at an angle of 45 degree from the cutter axis. A horizontal downwards cutting orientation proveded the best tool life with cut lengths ∼50% longer than for all other directions (horizontal upwards, vertical downwards, vertical upwards). Second, the cutting environments were investigated for dry, flood coolant, and compressed chilly air coolant cutting. The experiments were performed for various hardened materials and various coated tools. The results show that the cutting environment using compressed cilly air coolant provided better tool life than the flood coolant or the dry.

A series of experiments has been conducted in order to begin to characterize the factors affecting surface roughness and determine the range of attainable surface roughness values for the high speed milling process. It has previously been shown that run-out creates a greater problem for the dimensional accuracy of pans created by high speed milling process. And run-out also has a more significant effect on the surface quality of milled parts. The surface roughness traces reveal large peak to valley variations. This run-out is generated by spindle dynamics and tool geometry. In order to investigate the relationship between tool alignment errors and surface roughness the scallop generating mechanism in the ball-end milling with tool alignement errors has been studied and simulated. The results indicate that tool alignment errors have no significant effects ell the dimension of scallops in for flat planes.
In this paper, the real shapes of micro tool deflection were observed. In micro endmilling process, micro tool deflection generates very serious problems in contrast to macro tool deflection. For analyzing the micro tool deflection, the trend of micro tool deflection was observed using real captured images in this paper. To get the real images of micro tool deflection, micro slot cutting processes were executed under cutting volume using micro endmill($Dia.\;200{\mu}m$) and real images of tool deflection were obtained during cutting processing by high-speed camera. Finally, the extent of tool deflection was calculated by the deflection angle according to cutting volume.
Recently, the motor-integrated spindle systems have been used to simplify the machine tool structure, to improve the motion flexibility of machine tool, and to perform the high-speed machining. In this study, a static and dynamic analysis system for motor-integrated high-speed spindle systems is developed based on Timoshenko theory, finite element method and windows programming techniques. Since the system has various analysis modules related to static deformation analysis, modal analysis, frequency response analysis, unbalance response analysis and so on, it is useful in performing systematically the design and evaluation processes of motor-integrated high-speed spindle systems under windows GUI environment.
