  • The feasibility for a practical use of underwater wet arc welding process is experimentally investigated by using low hydrogen and high oxide type electrodes and TMCP steel plates. Main results are summarized as follows: 1)The absorption speed of the coated low hydrogen and high titanium oxide type eletrodes becomes constant after about 30 minutes in water, and more steeping time in water does not influnce welding arc behavior. 2) By bead appearance and X-ray inspection, the high titanium oxide type electrode is better than the low hydrogen type in underwater arc welding process. 3) The mechanical properties of underwater wet arc welds depend upon welding conditions more than those of in-air welds, and the optimum welding condition can be obtained. 4) Because of quenching effect by rapid cooling rate in underwater wet welding, the maximum hardness of HAZ is increased relatively higher in underwater wet welding, process.

  • Friction stir welding is one of the interesting welding methods for titanium and its alloy which proceeds with plastic flow due to thermo-mechanical stirring and friction heat. Solid-state welding can solve severe problems such as high-temperature oxidation, interstitial oxygen diffusion and grain coarsening by liquid-state welding. Dynamic recrystallization and grain refinement can vary significantly with the plunging load and rotational speed of tool during friction stir welding, and suitable process conditions must be optimized to obtain microstructure and better mechanical characteristics. Suitable FSW conditions were 1000 kg of plunging load and 200 rpm of rotational speed and it showed YS 270 MPa, UTS 332.1 MPa, and El 17.3%, which were very similar to those of wrought titanium sheet.

  • The weldability of high purity aluminum-lithium binary alloys has been investigated using the Varestraint test. Autogenous GTAW (gas-tungsten-arc-welds) were run along specimens of different lithium concentration using three sets of welding parameters. Welding voltage was held constant at 10 volts. Welding current (70∼100 amps) and travel speed (23∼33 cm/min) were the parameter varied. Hot-tearing susceptibility varied with lithium content and exhibited a steep peak at 2.6 weight percent lithium. Depth of penetration increased with increasing heat input and lithium concentration. The susceptibility is influenced by the wettability of dendrites by the interdendritic eutectic liquid as well as the time available for back-Siting by eutectic liquid. The welding condition of welding current 70A and travel speed 23 cm/min was showed good resistance to cracking in aluminum-lithium alloys. Suggestions for improving weld cracking resistance are also provided.

  • It has been suggested that the motivation for automation of welding processes ncludes the replacement and extension of the functions of human operators. Among these types of the welding automation, SAW(Submerged Arc Welding) was prevalently used, because it is highly suited to a wide range of application, especially for the high speed welding. A Significant portion of the total manufacturing time for a pipe fabrication process is spent on the welding following primary machining and fit-up processes. To achieve the reliable weld bead appearance, the automatic seam tracking and adaptive control to fill the groove are urgently needed. This paper proposed the mechanical functions of multi-torches welding system, flux supply and recovery system in conjunction with the complex air pulsing method and various types of methodologies. It was shown that the multi-torches welding system revealed the high welding qualities for the circular and rectangular pipes. In conclusion, the multi-torches welding system developed will contribute the advanced welding technology, welding automation and increment of the market in these areas.

  • Aluminum alloy has not only physical characteristic of very high activated high thermal conductivity and high thermal coefficient expansion but also special characteristic of great difference fusibility of hydrogen between liquid and solid phase. Because of these reasons, Aluminum welding is very different. Therefore, only MIG welding method should be applied instead of other welding methods. In this study, in order to select optimal welding conditions, it has been to investigate the effectiveness on the welding current, welding speed, flow rate of gas and welding voltage to occurrence of spatters, external shape of bead, state of penetration and width and hight of bead by using filer metal of A15356(dia. 1.21mm) on the base material of A16061.

  • In the welding for the steel structure of H-beam with mild steel and 490N/$\textrm{mm}^2$ high tensile steel, we applied the fillet weld mostly and 6-8mm weld length(AISC-spec.). And a new developed metal-cored-wire is used in automatic welding as well as semi-automatic welding. In this study we have attempted to raise the welding productivity and to stabilize the quality on horizontal positions of fillet welding with the following items: - We improved the weld productivity using metal based cored wire with a high deposition rate in the steel structure of H-beam. - We tested the weldability and evaluated the quality of the weldmetal by horizontal fillet $CO_2$ welding. The process is carried out in combination with a special purpose metal-based FCW with excellent resistance to porosity and high welding speed. - We studied the micro structure of the weldmetal by the various welding conditions. - We studied the effect of welding residual stress by the welding conditions in T-joint. Therefore, it can be assured that more productive and superior quality of the weldmetal can be taken from this study results.

  • High welding speed and narrow weld seam are favorable for welding of magnesium alloy. Magnesium alloy is recommended for the smart frame because it has several advantages such as low density, high thermal conductivity, EMI shielding capability and good cast ability. This study is for the assembly welding of the magnesium smart frame with high productivity, good performance and low cost. The window for battery on AZ91D frame produced by die-casting was prepared by CNC machining. Corresponding AZ31 blank of 0.2mm thickness was prepared by die-blanking cut. All system set was fixed at the stationary bed but the laser beam was manipulated by scanner up-to 1,000mm/s speed. The weld joint between AZ31 sheet and AZ91D frame was welded by fiber laser on 850~1,000W output power. The joint showed penetration enough but some humping bead. The distortion by the weld heat was almost free because of the quick dissipation of the heat by small beam size and fast welding. Consequently, the thinner magnesium foil was assembled successfully to the magnesium frame of mobile phone.

  • High power laser beams are used in a wide variety of materials processing applications such as cutting, welding, drilling and surface treatment. The CO$\sub$2/ laser is increasingly used in laser beam welding because of the highly potential advantages. High power laser welding is a high energy density, no filler metals and low heat input process to join metals. As the comparison with the conventiona welding, precision work and good fit-up to join the metals are required and maintenance is expensive at present. The principal variables of laser beam welding are the laser beam power, travel speed and bean spot size. The penetration depth during laser beam welding is directly related to the power density of the laser beam. Generally, for a constant beam size, the penetration depth increases with increasing laser beam power.

  • Laser beam welding parameters have experimentally investigated, using a continuous wave 3kW $CO_2$ laser with the various travel speeds, beam mode and laser beam power in low carbon steels. An optimum position of focus and the effect of shielding gas on penetration depth with varying the flow range of 0.5 to 5.1m/min have been combined to investigate the effect of laser power and travel speed on penetration depth and bead width. It is found that the optimum position of focus in 3kW class laser is 0.5 to 1.5mm below the surface of the material. The flow rate of shielding gas affects the penetration depth and He is more effective than Ar. The penetration depth in laser welds of low carbon steels is between two and four times of the bead width. Laser beam welding of butt joints in 2mm thick carbon steel has been carried out to establish a weldability lobe. The lobe indicating acceptable welding conditions is introduced.
