  • Plant responses to salinity stress is critical in determining the growth and development. Therefore, adaptability of plant to salinity stress is directly related with agriculture productivity. Salt adaptation is a result of the integrated functioning of numerous determinants that are regulated coordinately through an appropriate responsive signal transduction cascade. The cascade perceives the saline environment and exerts control over the essential mechanisms that are responsible for ion homeostasis and osmotic adjustment. Although little is known about the component elements of salt stress perception and the signaling cascade(s) in plant, the use of Arabidopsis plant as a molecular genetic tool has been provided important molecular nature of salt tolerance effectors and regulatory pathways. In this review, I summarize recent advances in understanding the molecular mechanisms of salt adaptation.

  • The rate of bacterial degradation of hydrocarbon was estimated for the measurment of the self-purification capacity of the aquatic ecosystem. Strain ND601P-2, selected as petroleum degrading bacteria from Nakdong River Estuary with high degradability of petroleum, transformed 42% of hexadecane to $CO_{2}$ or cell mateials under the conditions of $25^{\circ}C$, 0.03M NaCl, 167mg-$NH_{4}^+/1, 950 mg-PO_{4}^{3-}$/1, 50 mg-hexadecane/1. The mineralization rate was found to be significantly affected by the temperature and the $Q_{10}$ value was 2.2. Teh optimal salinity of the strain ND601P-2 was 2o/oo. The increased salinity caused the elevation of % respiration value and the prolonged lag phase.

  • Using the data observed on the Oshoro-maru from November 4 to November 12, 1989 in the East China Sea, the oceanographic conditions were investigated. The results are as follows: The oceanographic condition of surface layer was divided into two regions. One was the Tsushima Current Waters and the other was the China Coastal Waters. The oceanic front was formed between above two waters. Tsushima Current Waters had high temperature ranging 22~24$^{\circ}C$, high salinity ranging 33.5~34.5$\textperthousand$ and low D.O less than 4.5ml/l. And China Coastal Waters had low temperature ranging 18~2$0^{\circ}C$, low salinity less than 23.0$\textperthousand$ and high D.O ranging 4.0~5.0ml/l. In the case of the bottom layer, Tsushima Current Waters and China Coastal Waters appeared the same as the surface layer. In addition, the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Waters and the Southern Bottom Waters of East China Sea distributed together with two surface waters above. The was temperature ranging 15~19$^{\circ}C$, salinity 34.5$\textperthousand$ and low D.O ranging 2.0~3.5ml/l and that was temperature less than 1$0^{\circ}C$, salinity less than 33.3$\textperthousand$ and high D,O greater than 4.5ml/l. The waters of intermediate characteristics between China Coastal Waters and Tsushima Current Waters seem to be resulted from the mixing occurred between the above tow waters, and it had temperature of 20.5~22.$0^{\circ}C$, salinity of 32.3~33.3$\textperthousand$.

  • In order to investigate the effect of inflow of Yangze river on the distribution of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$, the results of serial oceanographic observation during 2000-2005 were used. The oceanographic conditions in the northern East China Sea is influenced by the Tsushima Warm Current and low saline water derived from the Yangze river. The distributions of these water masses vary significantly by the season in the northern East China Sea. The sea surface temperature and salinity were stable and concentrations of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ were low in the eastern part of $126^{\circ}E$. On the contrary, the salinity was significantly influenced by the low saline water derived from Yangze river with the high concentrations of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$. It is suggested that the low saline water inflowed from the Yangze river affects high concentrations of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ in the northern East China Sea in summer.

  • In order to estimate the nutrient flux of the Seomjin River into the coastal waters of South Sea, and to understand the estuarine reactions during mixing between river water and seawater, we collected surface water along the salinity gradient in the Seomjin River estuary from Mar. 1999 to Apr. 2001. We found that nitrate and silicate were delivered by fluvial input, while phosphate was, supplied from disposed wastes in the Gwangyang Bay. Mean annual flux of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphate and silicate into the Gwangyang Bay was estimated 10.9 molesㆍsec$^{-1}$(4,820 tonnesㆍyr$^{-1}$), 0.07 molesㆍsec$^{-1}$(68 tonnesㆍyr$^{-1}$), 13.3 molesㆍsec$^{-1}$(11,747 tonnesㆍy$^{-1}$), respectively. An evident removal of phosphate, silicate and ammonium at the mid-salinity zone during the dry season was attributed to the active uptake of phytoplankton, and consequently nutrient flux into the Gwangyang Bay was low. Whereas, during the flood season in summer, conservative or additional distribution of the nutrients was observed in the estuary. As a rsult nutrient flux into the Gwangyang Bay was maintained high. High concentrations of chlorophyll a and the active removal of nutrient during the dry season at the mid-salinity zone suggest that nutrient distribution in the Seomjin River estuary was mainly controlled by biological processes and nutrient fluxes into the Gwangyang Bay might be significantly modified of by the primary production.

  • Three generalized additive models were applied to the distribution of anchovy eggs and oceanographic factors to determine the occurrence of anchovy spawning grounds in Korean waters and to identify the indicators of their occurrence using survey data from the spring and summer of 1985, 1995, and 2002. Binomial and Gaussian types of generalized additive models (GAM) and quantile generalized additive models (QGAM) revealed that egg density was influenced mostly by ocean temperature and salinity in spring, and the vertical structure of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and zooplankton biomass during summer in the upper quantiles of egg density. The GAM and QGAM model deviance explained 18.5-63.2% of the egg distribution in summer in the East and West Sea. For the principle component analysis-based GAMs, the variance explained by the final regression model was 27.3-67.0%, higher than the regular models and QGAMs for egg density in the East and West Sea. By analyzing the distribution of anchovy eggs off the Korean coast, our results revealed the optimal temperature and salinity conditions, in addition to high production and high vertical mixing, as the key indicators of the major spawning grounds of anchovies.

  • In this research, we examined the effect of NaCl on the growth, energy metabolism, and proton motive force of Halomonas salina, and the effect of compatible solutes on the bacterium growing in the high salinity environment. H. salina was isolated from seawater and identified by 16srDNA sequencing. The growth of H. salina was not enhanced by the addition of external compatible solutes (choline and betaine) in the high salinity environment. The resting cells of H. salina absorbed more glucose in the presence of 2.0 M NaCl than in its absence. H. salina did not grow in the medium with either KCl, RbCl, CsCl, $Na_2SO_4$, or $NaNO_3$, in place of NaCl. The optimal concentration of NaCl for the growth of H. salina ranged from 1.4 M to 2.5 M, and the growth yield was decreased in the presence of NaCl below 1.4M and above 2.5M. The activity of isocitrate dehydrogenase, pyruvate dehydrogenase, and malate dehydrogenase of H. salina was not inhibited by NaCl in in vitro test. The proton translocation of H. salina was detected in the presence of NaCl only. These results indicate that NaCl is absolutely required for the normal growth and energy metabolism of H. salina, but the bacterial growth is not enhanced by the compatible solutes added to the growth medium.

  • BACKGROUND: Wastewaters were collected from 25 sites of two industrial areas of Mymensingh and Gazipur in Bangladesh to assess metallic toxicity of wastewater for irrigation usage. METHODS AND RESULTS: The analyzed wastewaters were slightly alkaline to alkaline in nature and were problematic for irrigation except 3 samples. As per TDS values, 9 samples were rated as fresh water and the rest 16 were classified as brackish water. EC and SAR reflected that all samples were medium salinity (C2), high salinity (C3), very high salinity (C4) and low alkalinity (S1) hazard classes expressed as C2S1, C3S1 and C4S1. Wastewaters of different industries were graded as excellent, good, permissible and doubtful for irrigation purpose as per SSP. According to hardness ($H_T$), wastewater were under moderately hard, hard and very hard classes. Cd, Cr and Cu ions were treated as toxicant for irrigating soils and crops. Zn was problematic for long-term irrigation. The concentrations of Pb, Fe and Na were far below the toxic levels. Synergistic relationships were observed between pH-EC, pH-TDS, EC-TDS, SAR-SSP and SSP-hardness. CONCLUSION(s): If wastewater is applied for irrigation due to the fresh water shortage, it can contaminate soil due to some toxic metal ions.

  • This study area was Saemangeum Reservoir in Korea and the applied model was Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code(EFDC). It was the same as the scenarios to the boundary and initial conditions except the resolutions of the model grids. The resolutions were about 800 and 2,000 cells. It was considered scenario 1 and 2. The model was performed to simulate the water temperature, salinity, water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen(DO), chemical oxygen demand(COD), total nitrogen(T-N), and total phosphorus(T-P) at 2008. The simulation results of the two scenarios were reflected in the trend of observed data tolerably. However, water flow, water temperature, and salinity showed high confidence level at the scenario 1. The water quality items did not present high confidence level at the scenario 1 because which concept was considered to biochemical and physical processes. This result shows that grid resolution has an influence on the water transport and the effect is reflected directly shallow and narrow water area. But, the selection of grid resolution should be considered the purpose of model simulation and the process of target items.

  • There are groundwater trouble by high-salinity yield inducing sea-water intrusion in Cheju Island. It is used groundwater-GIS(Well-lnfo) in the maintenance and management of groundwater in Cheju Island to grasp groundwater trouble area and cause of high-salinity yield. For 16 wells certain to yield high-salinity, we logged specific electrical conductivity(EC) and tried to get hold of freshwater and saltwater relationship. As result of distribution of $Cl^-$ by depth, it is showed up groundwater trouble by high-salinity yield in the east coastal area and the partly north coastal area. The reason of high-salinity groundwater yield are low-groundwater level by the structure of geology and low-hydraulic gradient etc. There is necessity for management to development and use of groundwater in the high-salinity area, special management area.
