Current vibration serviceability assessment criteria for wind-induced vibrations in tall buildings are based largely on human 'perception' thresholds which are shown not to be directly translatable to human 'acceptability' of vibrations. There is also a considerable debate about both the metrics and criteria for vibration acceptability, such as frequency of occurrence or peak vs mean vibration, and how these might vary with the nature of the vibration. Furthermore, the design criteria are necessarily simplified for ease of application so cannot account for a range of environmental, situational and human factors that may enhance or diminish the impact of vibrations on serviceability. The dual-site VSimulators facility was created specifically to provide an experimental platform to address gaps in understanding of human response to building vibration. This paper considers how VSimulators can be used to inform general design guidance and support design of specific buildings for habitability, in terms of vibration, which allow engineers and clients to make informed decisions with regard to sustainable design, in terms of energy and financial cost. This paper first provides a brief overview of current vibration serviceability assessment guidelines, and the current understanding and limitations of occupants' acceptability of wind-induced motion in tall buildings. It then describes how the dual-site VSimulators facility at the Universities of Bath and Exeter can be used to assess the effects of motion and environment on human comfort, wellbeing and productivity with examples of how the facility capabilities have been used to provide new, human experience based experimental research approaches.

With the development of cities, the density of the population is continuously increasing as buildings become larger and more high-rise, but since the Haeundae residential complex fire in Busan in 2010, there has been a growing need to meet the fire protection performance of buildings as large-scale fires continue to occur every year. On the other hand, fire doors, which are one of the fire protection performance of buildings, have been judged unqualified in 82% of cases when fire doors constructed on the actual site were inspected after completion. The reason for this is that paper honeycomb and glasswool, which are used as core materials for fire doors, absorb moisture, reducing thermal insulation performance, and sagging due to increased weight, leading to performance degradation due to warping in empty spaces. To overcome these problems, research is underway to apply lightweight aerated concrete, an inorganic material, as a core material. Therefore, in order to select a blowing agent that produces stable bubbles prior to the production of lightweight bubble concrete for application as a fire door inner core, this study examined the physical performance according to the type of blowing agent and dilution concentration, and the following conclusions were drawn. Compared to vegetable bubbles and independent bubbles, synthetic bubbles have 3~8% higher thermal conductivity than independent bubbles, but 3~6% lower slurry density than vegetable bubbles, and 2~13% higher compressive strength, which is thought to be an improvement of synthetic bubbles.

In the case of steel door frames commonly found in general buildings, there are various assembly methods such as rivets, bolts, and welding, but the welding method is generally used. However, this welding joint method has many problems, such as distortion due to heat and damage due to external shock. In particular, when used as a fire door, problems may occur in the event of a fire due to distortion caused by heat from welding and the weak welded joint area. In the case of rivet or welded joints, when moved after assembly, joint loosening due to external shock may occur. Problems may arise where the bonding strength becomes weak. In addition, with the recent increase in high-rise buildings and larger buildings, when assembly is completed and brought to the site, a place is needed to store it, and in addition, there is a problem in that it has to be transported several times in small quantities to the installation site, which is another problem of time and cost loss. This is coming to the fore. In order to fundamentally solve this problem, we have researched and developed a non-welding door frame that can be assembled on site. We have researched and developed three assembly methods: screw-type, insert-type, and protrusion-type. Non-welded door frames are small in size and easy to package, making them advantageous for domestic and overseas exports.
Wind-induced motions, like acceleration for instance, often influence designs for high-rise buildings. As a consequence, correct assessment of natural frequency becomes important. The empirical expressions used to quantify this parameter at the design phase tend to yield values that are significantly different from each other. This paper is concerned with the natural periods of steel buildings. It describes the vibration measurement methods that were employed for testing buildings. This paper will also present reliable methods of assessing the natural period from ambient vibration tests. Data from measurements on 21 buildings in Seoul were provided while 21 buildings were tested by ambient vibration measurements to obtain the natural periods. While regression formulas of natural periods for steel-frarried tall buildings were suggested, the obtained formula was compared with the empirical expressions of structural standards and the Eigen-value analysis.

Recently, as high-rise buildings increase steeply, sub-structures of them are often supported on elastic foundation(in a case of pasternak foundation or winkler foundation). And there are many machines in sub-structures of buildings and slabs of sub-structures are affected by vibration which they make. This paper deals with vibration of plates on elastic foundation. Machines on plates are considered as concentrated mass. This paper has the object of investigating natural frequencies of tapered thick plate on pasternak foundation by means of finite element method and providing kinetic design data for mat of building structures. Free vibration analysis that tapered thick plate with Concentrated Masses in this paper. Finite element analysis of rectangular plate is done by use of rectangular finite element with 8-nodes. In order to analysis plate which is supported on pasternak foundation. The Winkler parameter is varied with 10, $10^2$, $10^3$ and the shear foundation parameter is 5, 10. This paper is analyzed varying thickness by taper ratio. The taper ratio is applied as 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0. And the Concentrated Mass is applied as P1, Pc, P2 respectively.
A framework for multi-platform analytical and multi-component hybrid (testing-analysis) simulations is described in this paper and illustrated with several application examples. The framework allows the integration of various analytical platforms and geographically distributed experimental facilities into a comprehensive pseudo-dynamic hybrid simulation. The object-oriented architecture of the framework enables easy inclusion of new analysis platforms or experimental models, and the addition of a multitude of auxiliary components, such as data acquisition and camera control. Four application examples are given, namely; (i) multi-platform analysis of a bridge with soil and structural models, (ii) multiplatform, multi-resolution analysis of a high-rise building, (iii) three-site small scale frame hybrid simulation, and (iv) three-site large scale bridge hybrid simulation. These simulations serve as illustrative examples of collaborative research among geographically distributed researchers employing different analysis platforms and testing equipment. The versatility of the framework, ease of including additional modules and the wide application potential demonstrated in the paper provide a rich research environment for structural and geotechnical engineering.
Crack control remains a primary concern for mass concrete structures, where the majority of cracking is caused by temperature changes during the hydration process. One-time pouring is a useful construction method for mass concrete structures. The suitability of this method for constructingon of the Shanghai Tower's mass concrete foundation slab of Shanghai Tower is considered here by a numerical simulation method based on a 6- meter- thick slab. Some of the conclusions, which can be verified by monitoring results conducted during construction, are as follows. The temperature gradient is greater in the vertical direction than in the radial direction, therefore, the vertical temperature gradient should be carefully considered for the purpose of crack control. Moreover, owing to cooling conditions at the surfaces and the cement mortar content of the slab, the temperatures and temperature gradients with respect to time vary according to the position within the slab.
The fire resistance performance of generic CFT columns has been verified through various tests and analyses and the columns are widely used for fire resistance designs abroad. In this study, 3 groups of specimens (Non-fire protection, reinforcement with steel fiber and fire resistance paint) are suggested in order to evaluate the fire resistance performance of interior anchor type concrete-filled steel tubular columns having efficient cross-sections through loaded heating tests. Axial deformation-time relationship and in-plane temperatures are compared to evaluate the fire resistance performance of the specimens associated with variables. Suggested from the fact that the interior anchors exposed to fire exert influence on fire resistance performance due to thermal expansion, the reinforcements using steel fiber and fire resistance paint are verified to mitigate contraction and improve fire resistance performance. The result obtained from the tests of interior anchor type concrete-filled tubular columns is expected to be used for effective fire resistance design in association with previously conducted studies.
Detailed finite element (FE) analyses of a full-scale four-story steel frame structure, subjected to consecutive 60% and 100% excitations from the JR Takatori records during the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake, are conducted using E-Simulator. The four-story frame was tested at the largest shake-table facility in the world, E-Defense, in 2007. E-Simulator is a parallel FE analysis software package developed to accurately simulate structural behavior up to collapse by using a fine mesh of solid elements. To reduce computational time in consecutive dynamic time history analyses, static analysis with gravity force is introduced to terminate the vibration of the structure during the analysis of 60% excitation. An overall sway mechanism when subjected to 60% excitation and a story mechanism resulting from local buckling of the first-story columns when subjected to 100% excitation are simulated by using E-Simulator. The story drift response to the consecutive 60% and 100% excitations is slightly smaller than that for the single 100% excitation.
