  • Many recent development activities suggest the possibility of a high-speed turbo(centrifugal) compressor or blower for the industrial application of compressed air supplying system when used with the most advanced high-speed motor, inverter technology, and advanced bearing for high rotational speed. The problems to be overcome are of reliability, the application of mass production methods, cost effective manufacture and competitive running costs. This presentation is not focused on a specific technology advances but on an overall review of our recent experiences while we have developed the high pressure turbo blower for the commercial purpose.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics of the small two-stage turbo blower were investigated using commercial CFD tool(ANSYS CFX Ver. 14.5) in this paper. Turbo blower, which is a centrifugal type of turbomachinery, is used in various industries. It is used for application that required high static pressure rising at relatively small volumetric flow rate. In order to understand the mechanism of static pressure rising, the aerodynamic characteristics of the small two-stage turbo blower are analyzed at high rotating speed in this study. The k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model, which is good at prediction of adverse pressure gradient flows, was applied. The CFD results of the turbo blower are validated by performance test. The static pressure rising of the turbo blower is nonlinearly increased over the first stage and the second stage. The secondary flow occurred at guide vanes, between the casing and the first impeller shroud, and the bottom of the impeller disk. As a result, It is required that whole fluid area is analyzed to predict aerodynamic characteristics of small two-stage turbo blower. and the result should be selected with considering for error from experiment and CFD.

  • Air foil bearings have been attempted for application to industrial turbo machines, since they have several advantages over oil bearings in terms of endurance, simplicity, environment-friendliness, efficiency, sound and vibration, and small turbo machines with air foil bearings are in the market as the result. Recently, researches on widening the application spectrum of air foil bearings are in progress worldwide. In this paper, a 300 HP class turbo blower using air foil bearings is introduced. The turbo blower has a high speed PMSM(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) driving a compressor, and air flow rate is designed to be $180\;m^3/min$ at pressure ratio of 1.6. The maximum rotational speed is set to 17,000 RPM to maximize the total efficiency with the result that the weight of rotor assembly is 26kg, which is expected to be the largest turbo machine with air foil bearings ever developed in the world.

  • Turbo blower generates high peaks when it operates at high pressure region. The fan of the air-cleaner system, operates especially high pressure region due to several filters, generates high noise level. In this case, the tonal sound of BPF makes people annoyance. The blower of air-cleaner has several high resistance filters in its inlet area and rotates above 900rpm Moreover, for the compact design, the size of the blower should be reduced 10%.   • A centrifugal turbo blower of the fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) operates at very high speed above 30000 rpm in order to increase the pressure of the air, which supplied to a stack of FCEV, using rotation of its impeller blades. Vibration which originated from the blower is generated by unbalance of mechanical components, rotation of bearings and rotating asymmetry that rotate at high speed. The vibration is transmitted to receiving structure through vibration isolators and it can causes serious problems in the noise, vibration and harshness(NVH) performance. Thus, the study about reducing this kind of vibration is an important task. In this paper, dynamic analysis of the blower executed by numerical simulation and experimental analysis of the blower is also performed. Then, measured and simulated results are compared in order to validate of the simulation. Finally, reducing vibration through modifying mount stiffness is the main purpose of this paper.

  • A centrifugal turbo blower is one of the part to generate electric power of fuel cell electric vehicle(FCEV). In order to generate the electric power of FCEV, the centrifugal turbo blower operates at very high speed above 30,000rpm in order to increase the pressure of the air, which supplied to a stack of FCEV, using rotation of its impeller blades. Vibration which originated from the blower is generated by unbalance of mechanical components, rotation of bearings and rotating asymmetry that rotate at high speed. The vibration is transmitted to receiving structure through vibration isolators and it can causes serious problems in the noise, vibration and harshness(NVH) performance. Thus, the study about reducing this kind of vibration is an important task. Quantifying the effectiveness of vibration isolation can be effectively accomplished by using vibrational power flow because relative contributions of each isolator to the total vibration transmission can be easily represented. In this paper, vibrational power flow is applied to the centrifugal turbo blower mounted on FCEV in order to analyze the most dominant vibration transmitting path. As a result, the main contributor among four isolators is a mount #3 of the blower. Also, a 30 percent lowering of the mount #3 stiffness shows 34 percent decrement of vibrational power flow by the simulation.

NUMERICAL PREDICTION OF THE OPTIMAL STAGGER ANGLES FOR A HIGH-POWER TURBO BLOWER (고마력 터보 블로어의 최적 깃배치각에 관한 수치 예측)

  • The turbo blowers having large power capacity are generally composed of the variable inlet guide vane, the impeller and the variable diffuser. In the present study, the effect of the stagger angles on the aerodynamic performances has been investigated by CFD methods. The design specifications of the reference model having 400kW power were given as 7.43kg/s of mass flow rate, 1.66 of pressure ratio with 12000rpm of impeller rotating speed. As the first simulation parameter, the diffuser vane angle was varied in the range of ${\pm}$20 degree from the initial-design point. The inlet guide vane angles, as the second one, was changed in the range of ${\pm}$40 degree from the initial-design point. The commercial Navier-Stokes solver, ANSYS-CFX, was applied to solve the three-dimensional unsteady flow fields inside the turbo blower. Through the numerical results, the desirable setting angles were proposed to fit the best performance to the variation of the operating conditions.

  • The air supply system has a significant effect on the efficiency of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) systems. The performance and efficiency of automotive PEMFC systems are greatly influenced by their air supply system configurations. This study deals with the system simulation of automotive PEMFC systems using MATLAB/Simulink framework. In this study, a low-pressure operating PEMFC system adopting blower sub-module (turbo-blower) is modeled to investigate the effects of stack operating temperature and air stoichiometry on the parasitic power and efficiency of automotive PEMFC systems. In addition, the PEMFC net system efficiency and parasitic power of air supply system are mainly compared for the two types (low-pressure operating and high-pressure operating) of automotive PEMFC systems under the same net power conditions. It is suggested that the obtained results from this system approach can be applied for establishing the novel operating strategies for FC vehicles.

Study on flows by turbofan without scroll casing (스크롤 케이싱이 없는 터보팬에 관한 연구)

  • Turbo fan as an air moving device is widely used for its silent characteristics and high efficiency relative to the other centrifugal multi blade impeller. In general, turbo fan is installed with a scroll casing for energy conversion from kinetic one to pressure energy. However, a turbo fan without scroll casing is considered as a present model that is proposed model for compact design of a product In detail, the model has only 4 cutoffs as guiders for 4 separated outlets. Specially, equal distribution of flow rate generated by the model blower is main interest in this investigation. The optimal position of the guider is found by reducing abnormal flows such as reverse flow in each outlet.
