  • CBTC(Communication-Based Train Control) system which is based on wireless communication can provide high density operation of the train using location tracking between ground and onboard train. It can also reduces maintenance expense because it does not require the ground equipment for tracking circuit and signal flag and so on. Recently, research and interest have been done on CBTC system. The high-speed trains up to 300km/h experience multi-path fading channel which bring about the performance degradation of wireless CBTC system. In this paper, we consider MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) antenna-based CBTC system for trains with Alamoutip-type space-time diversity transmission for reliable communication. Also we model a channel considering practical environment and evaluate performance improvement of proposed CBTC system.

  • Korean Train Express (KTX) has been commercially operating and achieving elevation on transport capacity since 2004. And HSR-350x was developed and succeeded in testing of running over 350km/h. The new high-speed train development project, HEMU-400x project, has started since last year. To develop the train system, it is important how we progress the configuration of the system, design, manufacturing and test verification. The authors devised the performance estimate and verification process of the HEMU-400x and the project is performed following the developed processes.

  • The Korean High Speed Train(KHST) had been developed and evaluating on the Kyoung-Bu High Speed Line by through 'G7-R&D project'. In order to evaluate the function and characteristics of high speed train system, various experimental conditions have been considered and conducted. In this paper, current collection characteristics of KHST between pantograph and catenary system and dynamic behaviors are measured and analysed over 300 to 350km/h in running speed of KHST. A measuring system which was developed and installed on the Korean High Speed Train for the performance and mechanical characteristics of the KHST pantograph is used for this trial running test and we proofed that KHST has a remarkable and stable current collection characteristics as it had been designed.

  • The transmission systems of high speed train serve in the severe condition compared with those of other trains, namely, they have to transmit high power to run with high speed and they have to make maximum use of the limited space. To clarify the capability of reduction gear unit for Korea High Speed Train, torque and temperature, vibration on the reduction gear unit were measured and test data were analyzed. This paper reports test methods and test results that performed to verify reliability of reduction gear unit during running test of Korea High Speed Train. It is confirmed from these results that the performance of reduction gear unit has not any problem.

A Study on the Control Method of Ventilating System for High Speed Train in a Tunnel (터널주행 고속전철의 환기시스템 제어 방법에 관한 연구)

  • The present study develops programs simulating the internal pressure change of cars due to the change of external pressure when trains run into or passing each other in a tunnel. A new continuous ventilating system control method has been developed in order to alleviate the aural discomfort of passengers riding a high speed train. This method is based on the change of the charged and discharged flow rate by detecting the air pressures generated outside and inside of the train. When the outside and inside pressure are detected, the speed of the charge or exhaust fans and also the valve opening ratios are changed. The elementary performance of the system is checked using dta of the TGV-K high speed train at a speed of 300km/h. Moreover, applicability of the system to the Koran high speed train at a speed of 350 km/h is ascertained by simulation and its effectiveness as a means to alleviate the ear pains is confirmed. This application of the system to the Korean high speed vehicles running in the speed range of 350km/h is considered to have good prospect.

  • The korean tilting train can increase the whole operating speed at a curved railroad, reducing the lateral acceleration with the tilting mechanism unlike the train developed before. However, increasing operating speed on the curved section, may cause safety problem of train travel. In general, a suspension system has important effects on driving safety. Therefore, optimization of suspension system is necessary to secure the safety of the tilting train. In this study, the tilting train suspension system has been optimized using Design of Experiments (DOE). First, the design parameter is selected using sensitivity analysis. A lateral acceleration which affects on the driving safety is chosen as the objective function. And the Design of Experiments (DOE) is used for optimization. As a result, new design parameters which show better performance than the existing suspension system has been suggested.

  • The systems engineering (SE) process shall be applied to the project for successful development of ultra-high-speed (UHS) Maglev train system which is one of very large and complex systems. It is important to abolish technology differentials from the advanced developers such as Germany, Japan, etc. and to ensure discriminatory competitiveness of the application of systems engineering process for the development of the system based on appropriate concepts and requirements. General operation concept and stakeholder's requirements of UHS Maglev train system must be elicited with system concept for initiating the project. The management plan should be devised for all sorts of systems engineering activities of risk management, performance management, lifecycle cost management, etc. This paper would support to establish the systems engineering management plan (SEMP) for the program of UHS Maglev train system development with associated documents.

  • Running test of the Korean High-Speed Train using remote controlled measuring system have been executed on the high speed track in order to evaluate and verify the performance of the train. In this paper, influencing factors on the contact force which represents dynamic characteristics between the pantograph and contact wire are analyzed, according to the track condition, span type and running condition. By the analytical study on the test data, we figured out that contact force and dynamic characteristics of the pantograph are mainly affected by running behavior of the train and the span distance which the train passes.

  • In this paper, the propulsion control of a high-speed maglev train is studied. Electromagnetic suspension is used to levitate the vehicle, and linear synchronous motors (LSM) are used for propulsion. In general, a low-speed maglev train uses a linear induction motor (LIM) for propulsion that is operated under 300[km/h] due to the power-collecting and end-effect problem of LIM. In case of the high-speed maglev train over 500[km/h], a linear synchronous motor (LSM) is more suitable than LIM because of a high-efficiency and high-output properties. An optical barcode positioning system is used to obtain the absolute position of the vehicle due to its wide working distance and ease of installation. However, because the vehicle is working completely contactless, the position measured on the vehicle has to be transmitted to the ground for propulsion control via wireless communication. For this purpose, Bluetooth is used and communication hardware is designed. A propulsion controller using a digital signal processor (DSP) in the ground receives the delayed position information, calculates the required currents, and controls the stator currents through inverters. The performance of the implemented propulsion control is analyzed with a small maglev train which was manufactured for experiments, and the applicability of the high-speed maglev train will be explored.
