Suggestions for the Estimation of the Methane Emission from a Landfill Site

  • Sudokwon landfill("Sudokwon" means regions of Seoul, Kyunggi and Incheon metropolitan cities in Korea), the world's largest sanitary landfill, has been systematically managing statistics on the incoming and dumping wastes and satisfactorily controlling pollutants including leachate and LFG. According to our long time experience of LFG field monitoring, the emission of GHG from landfill estimated by the IPCC Guideline showed much difference with our results. C&D waste has high concentration of sulfate compared to other wastes. Increased C&D waste of dumping waste had changed the COD/sulfate ratio in the landfill, which caused the increase of H2S gas and the decrease of CH4 gas. But the IPCC estimation method does not consider the effects of sulfate. In addition to that, the oxidation factor of the cover soil is set to the default values of 0.1 but the measured values by the field monitoring, are showing much higher than that, especially in the closed landfill.

Two-dimensional deformation measurement in the centrifuge model test using particle image velocimetry

  • The centrifuge model test is usually used for two-dimensional deformation and instability study of the soil slopes. As a typical loose slope, the municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill is easy to slide with large deformation, under high water levels or large earthquakes. A series of centrifuge model tests of landfill slide induced by rising water level and earthquake were carried out. The particle image velocimetry (PIV), laser displacement transducer (LDT) and marker tracer (MT) methods were used to measure the deformation of the landfill under different centrifugal accelerations, water levels and earthquake magnitudes. The PIV method realized the observation of continuous deformation of the landfill model, and its results were consistent with those by LDT, which had higher precision than the MT method. The deformation of the landfill was mainly vertically downward and increased linearly with the rising centrifugal acceleration. When the water level rose, the horizontal deformation of the landfill developed gradually due to the seepage, and a global slide surface formed when the critical water level was reached. The seismic deformation of the landfill was mainly vertical at a low water level, but significant horizontal deformation occurred under a high water level. The results of the tests and analyses verified the applicability of PIV in the two-dimensional deformation measurement in the centrifuge model tests of the MSW landfill, and provide an important basis for revealing the instability mechanism of landfills under extreme hydraulic and seismic conditions.

Treatability Tests for the Bioremediation of Unsanitary Landfill Waste Soils

  • A treatability investigation was conducted to determine if landfarming would be effective for the remediation of unsanitary landfill waste soils. Calculations based on biodegradable organic carbon contents and initial CO$_2$ evolution rates revealed that landfarming has a high potential for landfill site remediation and that the optimum strategy for bioremediation is site-specific.

  • The anaerobic landfill leachate treatment can surmount dilution problem of high concentration landfill leachate, collect methane gas as byproduct, and treat low phosphate concentration leachate because of low nutrient salt requirement. The problems of conventional anaerobic treatment that are requirement of large reactor because of low microbial growth rate(HRT=20-30 days) and low volumetric loading rate(VLR=0.5-2.0 kg $COD/m^3\cdot day$) are able to surmount by introduction of high rate anaerobic treatment. In this study, the upflow blanket filter(UBF) which is high rate anaerobic process was applyed to the landfill leachate treatment. The acceptable volumetric loading rate and HRT were 18.23 kg $SCOD/m^3\cdot day$ and 13 hrs. SCOD removal rate was over 90% at VLR 18.23 kg $SCOD/m^3\cdot day$. The methane gas yield was $0.15 lCH_4/g$ SCOD added(at STP) at VLR 18.23 kg $SCOD/m^3\cdot day$. The solids accumulation yield was 0.40 g VSS/g COD removed.

  • Developable areas nearby metropolitan areas, which has high the density of population are limited by highly industrialized. In recent, the redeveloping plans for the finished industrial and resident areas are pushing to resolve this problems. Getting to the exact properties for reclaimed wastes is very important to reuse of landfill. Also, a strategy for how to deal with follow-up measures have to based on the waste characteristics. A lot of environmental problems have been happened in finished waste landfill such as a nasty smell by seepage, pollution of surface and ground water, a poisonous gas and soil contamination. The environment pollution in waste landfill have been studied by many researchers. The goal of this study is estimate the effects for the ground properties with the environmental properties of waste in finished landfill. As the results, the chemical characteristics of seepage in landfill may effect directly or indirectly to capping layer. Therefore, sustainable researches are needed to develop a secure landfill over the long term.

  • Open dump causes groundwater and soil contamination by leachate, air pollution by LFG (Landfill Gas). In this paper, in order to improve landfill researches which have been done about reduction of high leachate level and LFG collection in the Kimpo landfill separately, the effect of simultaneous flowing of leachate and LFG has been Studied. The HYLGS (Hanyang Leachate Gas Simulator) used in this study is a 3D, 2-phase, transient FDM model which can be applied to venting trenches in a landfill. From present numerical analysis it can be concluded that all the pressures of the Kimpo landfill grid system are almost the same and their maximum value in the center grid block of the system is approximately 26 m $H_2O$ (2.52 atm), that because the pressures of venting trench layer situated in the middle of the landfill have the lowest values and equal with air pressure, the venting trenches play an important role in landfill stabilization, that the flow of gas will be more difficult as time goes by owing to the increase of LGR(Leachate and gas ratio).

Monitoring of Stream water and Groundwater Contamination at the Ilgok landfull Site in kwangju, Korea (광주지역 일곡 매립지 주변에서의 하천수 및 지하수 오염 모니터링)

  • In order to dermine the degree of contamination for the Ilgok landfill site, stream water, groundwater and stream sediment samples were collected in 1998 and 1999, and analyzed for physico-chemical properties. The stream water contains significanr concentrations of TDS $HCO_3^-$and $NO_3^-$, and ground-water is polluted by $NO_3^-$ up to the drinking water standard from landfill leachate. From the point of the horizontal movement of elements, stream water IL-2 at the conjunction point with landfill leachate reached the most high concentrations of $HCO_3^-,Cl^-,Na^+, K^+, NO_3^-,Mg{^2+}$ and $SO_4^{2-}$stream water Il-3 shows the high concentrations of $Ca^{2+}, Pb^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$. The optimum contamination indicator of Ilgok landfill site is $HCO_3^-, C^l-, Na^+, Mn^{2+}$ and TDS from the calculation of contamination factor.

Estimation of Biochemical Degradation in Landfill Waste (사후관리단계 매립지의 생화학적 안정성 평가 연구)

  • In the stage of aftercare in waste landfill management, it is very difficult to estimate the decomposition of landfill waste by excavation which damages the low permeability layer. This study developed the method to analyze the amount of landfill waste degraded bio-chemically as the types of leachate and gas, and applied the method to Nanjido landfill(NL). Application result showed that 70% of high biodegradable waste in NL was transformed to gas and leachate by 2000. Also this study suggested that the transformed portions of waste name for "Decomposition Index" at that time and the proposed method must be modified according to the biological condition of waste degradation.

  • As the size of our industry and population inclose, the byproducts such as municipal solid wastes, industrial wastes are in the increasing phase. The treatment of such things is rising as a social problem. Today, the final disposal of these wastes depends mostly on the landfill, and the sanitary landfill is required and designed for preventing soil and groundwater contamination. Clays have been used for a liner material of a sanitary landfill, however, the high quality clay is hard to come by and quite expensive as a lining material in our country. Using the waste lime produced abundantly every year from chemical processes was studied here, made from the proper mixing of the bentonite and the waste lime meets the regulations from the USEPA. The soil property index tests (sieve analysis, specific gravity test Atterberg limit test) were performed, and at last to confirm the sorption characteristics of the bentonite and the waste lime the sorption isotherm equilibrium test and the sorption isotherm were performed with Toluene and Ethylbenzene which are the main components of the leachate from the landfill.

해안매립지에서의 추적자시험 및 수위변화특성 연구

  • To demonstrate prevention of the leachate leakage out of the landfill with creating inward hydraulic gradient, a tracer test and continuous waterlevel monitoring at the Inside and outside of the barrier wall of a costal landfill were peformed. When the tracers were injected into the well outside of the vertical wall system with high water level, then they were detected at the well inside of the system with low water level. Furthermore the lowered water level at the inside of the landfill than that at the outside prevented leachate leakage out of the landfill. This study reports results of the tracer test and waterlevel monitoring.
