  • Conventional direct current (DC) rotating machines are usually used for crane and press machine using high torque in metal and steel industries, because of a constant output power along variable rotating speed. A general DC motor with permanent field magnets could not increase a magnetic flux density at a gap between armature coils and field magnets. However, a superconducting DC motor has field magnets composed with high temperature superconducting (HTS) coils and it could increase the magnetic flux density at the gap to over 10 times than those of a general DC motor by control the excitation current into HTS coils. The superconducting DC motor could be operated with extremely high torque and constant output power at a low rotational speed. In this paper, a 500 W superconducting DC rotating machine was conceptually designed with a LN2 (Liquid Nitrogen) cooling method and the operation characteristics results of HTS field magnets were presented. The two no-insulation HTS magnets for a 500 W superconducting DC rotating machine were fabricated. The excitation current for the HTS magnets could be controlled from 0 to 40 A. This test results will be available to design large-sized HTS magnets for a number of hundred kW class superconducting DC rotating machine under LN2 cooling system.

  • Although standards related to falling stone facilities are established in Korea, the absorption energy of the rockfall prevention net is evaluated from the passage of rockfall and destruction of the rockfall prevention net on field test. The existing PVC coating net does not sufficiently suppress the rockfall load and tears frequently occur, and a high-strength wire rockfall net was developed to prevent. In this study, the performance was analyzed through field tests of the existing PVC coating net and the developed high-strength rockfall net (1,000 MPa, 2,000 MPa).

  • Field monitoring techniques offer an attractive approach for understanding bridge behavior under in-service loads. However, the investigations on bridge behavior under high-speed train load using field monitoring data are limited. The focus of this study is to explore the structural behavior of an in-service long-span steel truss arch bridge based on field monitoring data. First, the natural frequencies of the structure, as well as the train driving frequencies, are extracted. Then, the train-induced bearing displacement and structural strain are explored to identify the effects of train loads and bearings. Subsequently, a sensitivity analysis is performed for the impact factor of strain responses with respect to the train speed, train weight, and temperature to identify the fundamental issues affecting these responses. Additionally, a similar sensitivity analysis is conducted for the peak acceleration. The results indicate that the friction force in bearings provides residual deformations when two consecutive trains are in opposite directions. In addition, the impact factor and peak acceleration are primarily affected by train speed, particularly near train speeds that result in the resonance of the bridge response. The results can provide additional insight into the behavior of the long-span steel truss bridges under in-service high-speed train loads.

  • Carbon nanotube are nanostructure with extraordinary field emission properties like high current density, low driving voltage and long time stability, because of their high electrical conductivity, high aspect ratio for geometrical field enhancement and superior thermal stability. But, there is some problem to mate metal and carbon nanotube, we have resolved this problem by using interfacial graphene. This approach takes advantage of superior electric and thermal conductivity between metal and carbon nanotube and shows superior performance compared to the existing field emitters. This result shows that such a carbon nanotube emitter in a stage where it can be used for Field Emission Electric Propulsion (FEEP).

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been considered as one of the promising candidate for next-generation field emitters because of their unique properties, such as high field enhancement factor, good mechanical strength, and excellent chemical stability. So far, a lot of researchers have been interested in field emission properties of CNT itself. However, it is necessary to study proper field emitter shapes, as well as the fundamental properties of CNTs, to apply CNTs to real devices. For example, specific applications, such as x-ray sources, e-beam sources, and microwave amplifiers, need to get a focused electron beam from the field emitters. If we use planar-typed CNT emitters, it will need several focal lenses to reduce a size of electron beam. On the other hand, the point-typed CNT emitters can be an effective way to get a focused electron beam using a simple technique. Here, we introduce a fabrication of CNT fibers with nanoscale point tips which can be used as a point-typed emitter. The emitter made by the CNT fibers showed very low turn-on electric field, high current density, and large enhancement factor. In addition, it showed stable emission current during long operation period. The high performance of CNT point emitter indicated the potential e-beam source candidate for the applications requiring small electron beam size.

  • To develop a 100 hp high temperature superconducting(HTS) motor with high efficiency first in Korea, we fabricated a HTS field winding and test. HTS field winding is composed of sixteen HTS race track shaped coils wound with stainless steel-reinforced Bi-2223 tape conductor by react and wind fabrication method. Nomex paper was used for electrical insulation. Each of four magnet pole assemblies was constructed with four double pancake sub-coils, mechanically stacked and electrically in series. Four magnet assemblies were fixed on an aluminum support structure to make effective heat transfer. The Critical current (Ic) was 41.5A at 77K and self field. However the lowest Ic value of sub-coils was 35A. Joule heat generated by each joints between sub-coils was lower than 1mW at 77K and 34A. And Joule heat generated by the joints between field coils was lower than 10mW at 77K and 34A. Joule heat of the whole field winding was 1W at 77K and 32A. And so, the lowest Ic value of sub-coils was more important than Joule heats generated by all joints. The operating current must be lower than the lowest Ic of all the sub-coils. In this paper, design, construction and testing of HTS field winding, Joule heat generated by the joints, and operating current were discussed.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the change of students' conceptual structures about sedimentary rocks through the field trip. A semantic network analysis method was utilized to assess the change. An open-ended questionnaire was developed to assess high school students' knowledge of sedimentary rock including its definition, classification, formation process, and characteristics. Fifteen high school students participated in the field trip of this study. The text data were analyzed using the semantic network analysis method. Results are as follows. First, high school students' conceptual structures about sedimentary rocks were more expanded after the field trip. Second, students' conceptual structures formed a 'small world network' by combining the sub-clusters. Third, the size of students' conceptual structures was decreased after a few month of field trip. Nonetheless, the connection among the clusters remained the same.

  • The operation of KTX in Korea has launched since 2004, which brought about a great change in railroad industry. We have acquired lots of great know-hows, especially in railroad construction and operation field. Therefore, we have been building up numerous operation skills until now. However, it was necessary to investigate some of the equipment based on our own environment because the high speed train system were totally imported. In case of Toughened Glass Stem Insulator, it was totally new type in domestic. This paper introduces estimation method and result in three different field aspect, such as an electrical field, a physical field, and environmental circumstances. First, in case of an electrical field, amplitude and a number of time for switching surge voltage data were collected. Second, in case of a physical field, amplitude and trend of vibration in to the insulator were examined. Finally, in case of environmental circumstances, flying possibility of gravel and ice clod were investigated. Also shrink and expend characteristic according to temperature were reviewed. Through this basic data, suitability for Toughened Glass Stem Insulator using in domestic high speed railway have been accumulated and estimated.

  • A primary limitation of the awlication of New class of solid state high power, high speed electronic device, narrely, the Photo-Conductive Power Switch(PCPS) is that the switches flashover at the surlace under average awlied fields much less than the bulk breakdown field of the semiconductor in most cases. The only way overcome those problffi1 and has a workable compact solid state switch is to passivate the surlace by a solid state dielectric material. In this experirrentation, The voltage withstands of Silicon is to be severely degraded when operated in vacuum(10[kV/cm]) and the perlormance is improved when operated in air(30[kV/cm[), in SF6(80~100[kV/cm]). After the passivation, the device had a breakdown field in vacuum and air at a field as high as the unpassivated device in SF6. A experirrent results show passivated devices have excellent breakdown field. In this paper, We improved the main properties and mechanism of the silicon breakdown before and after passivation under high field. field.
