Conceptual design of 10 MW class gearless type superconducting synchronous generator for wind turbine (10 MW급 gearless 타입 초전도 풍력발전기의 개념 설계)

  • This paper describes a conceptual design of 10 MW class gearless type superconducting synchronous generator for wind turbine. The main benefits of gearless type generator are decrease of the process of maintenance and loss caused by drive-train. The designed generator improves efficiency of high-capacity wind turbine by applying superconducting coil making high magnetic field. Conventional wind turbines were investigated for up-scaling of generator and the generator had been designed with estimated design parameters using a finite elements method analysis tool.

  • The support bearing requires high DN to raise specific energy efficiency for the state of the art rotating machine with high speed. Especially for the system has a big rotor(670 kgf) with high speed(about one million DNs) such as the pulsed generator, the selection of the bearing and lubrication method are very important. So the study for the critical speed of hollow rotor as well in accordance with high speed rotor and a full analysis are needed for rotor bearing system. This paper describes the analysis for rotor bearing system of pulsed generator compared with experimental data. The bearing and lubrication method are discussed as well with experimental data.

  • This paper shows the design of the 100 kW IPMSG for small hydraulic power generator. The high-efficient generator, method of the dual layer interior permanent magnet was studied to improve the method of the single layer interior permanent magnet, which is mostly used. Analysis of magnet arrangement and cogging torque was done by FEM. According to structure analysis of dual layer interior permanent magnet, the amount of usage of the permanent magnet was reduced and cogging torque was decreased as well. With these successful results, the high-efficient generator design was accomplished. Based on the results of the structure analysis, the test product was designed and manufactured. And the design values and performance outputs were compared and verified with success. Also, the economic feasibility was conducted based on the electric power generated from the test product installed at the site. By the B/C analysis, in case that only SMP was analyzed, B/C ratio was 1.24 at the discount ratio of 5.5%, which considered to be economically feasible. The study is expected to be used for the application of developing large scale high-efficient interior permanent magnet synchronous generator.

  • Pohang Wind Energy Research Center (PoWER-C) is developing a 3 MW Radial Flux Permanent Magnet (RFPM) Synchronous Generator for offshore Wind Energy Converter (WEC). The rotor rpm is 15.7 and the gear ratio is set to be 92.93. The nominal generator rpm at the rated load is about 1459. To reduce the switching loss in the power electronics, the maximum frequency is limited to 100 Hz. This requirement limits the number of pole to six or eight. Permanent magnet excitation is assumed for higher energy yield and higher efficiency. In this report, the requirements and the first efforts for the physics design are described.

Experimental Study on Thermal Insulation and Cooling for Rotor/Bearing Area in 500W Class Micro Gas Turbine Generator (500W급 마이크로 가스터빈 발전기 회전체-베어링부의 단열 및 냉각 성능에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • Development of long-term mobile energy sources for mobile robots or small-sized unmanned vehicles are actively increasing. The micro gas turbine generator (MTG) is a good candidate for this purpose because it has both of high energy density and high power density, and 500W class MTG is under development. The designed MTG can be divided into 2 main parts. One part consists of motor/ generator and compressor, and the other one consists of combustor, recuperator and turbine. 500W class MTG is designed to operate at ultra-high speed of 400,000 rpm in high turbine temperature over $700^{\circ}C$ to improve the efficiency. Because the magnetism of NdFeB permanent magnet for the motor/generator could be degraded if the temperature is over $150-200^{\circ}C$, MTG needs the thermal insulation to block the heat transfer from combustor/turbine side to motor/generator side. Moreover, the motor/generator is allocated to get the cooling effect from the rapid air flow by the compressor. This study presents the experimental results to verify whether the thermal insulator and air flow are effective enough to keep the motor/generator part in the low temperature less than $100^{\circ}C$. From the motoring test by using the high temperature test rig, it was confirmed that the motor/generator part could maintain the temperature less than $50^{\circ}C$ under the condition of 1.0 bar compressed air.

  • This paper describes a power quality disturbance generator for the test of a microgrid. The generator provides phase-angle jump as well as voltage sag with simple structure. The main components of the generator are SCR thyristors and transformers, therefore, high reliability and high efficiency can be obtained without switching losses. The operating principle of the proposed scheme is described and the voltage and current characteristics in case of voltage sag with phase-angle jump is analyzed. The usefulness of the proposed topology is verified through simulations and experimental results.

  • Free-piston engine system is a new type energy converter which uses a linear motion of piston by using linear generator. In free-piston engine system, the piston is not connected to a crank-shaft. The major advantages of free-piston engine system are high efficiency and low mechanical loss from the absence of motion conversion devices. Linear generator of free-piston engine system is used as generator and starting motor. In design step, considering of back-emf and detent force characteristics for generating mode and thrust and control characteristics for starting mode is needed. In this research, generating mode of flat-type linear generator and tubular-type linear generator is analyzed by finite element analysis method and starting mode of both type linear generators is analyzed by using capability curve. Capability curve is plotted from electrical parameters of both type linear generator and motion profile is calculated from mechanical parameters.

  • This paper presents an high efficiency energy conversion system for very high-speed flywheel energy storage system using high Tc superconducting bearings. Main configuration of power convertor is designed to replace of the conventional battery with EMB(Electro Mechanical Battery). PMSM(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) using Halbach array is used as the energy conversion system of motor and generator. Some PWM methods for the high frequency inverter is described and the power factor effects to the torque characteristics and efficiency of the motor and generator is analyzed. As the results, it is verified that the inverter output current is well regulated to be in-phase or inverse-phase sinusoidal waveform to have the wide operational range from 2,500rpm to 42,000rpm. Proposed circuit is designed to obtain the very high speed, high efficiency and stable rotational characteristics, and to be applied to1.2r[kW]/65[Wh] system.
