The wear behavior of two types of $Si_3N_4$ exposed to high and low humidity was examined at various sliding speeds, using bearing steel as disk material under pin-on-disk type sliding conditions. Higher wear rates were obtained at a high humidity than at a low humidity. As the sliding speed was increased, the wear rates were decreased and the effect of humidity on the wear rates of $Si_3N_4$ was reduced. The result that the $Si_3N_4$ pin showed higher wear rate under the high humidity condition was explained by the decrease in microhardness of $Si_3N_4$ due to the chemisorbed moisture on the pin and plowing action by the hard particles of $Fe_2O_3$ from the disk. An increase in the sliding speed is supposed to reduce the effect of humidity on the wear rate of $Si_3N_4$ by raising the average temperature of the disk surface and the local temperature at pin-disk contact point.
In oder to improve the wear resistance as well as oxidation resistance at high temperature a AISI H13 steel was treated by a duplex process of calorizing followed by plasma nitriding. The surface properties of the duplex-treated AISI H13 steel was characterized and compared with those treated by single surface process of calorizing and plasma nitriding, in terms of microstruture, microhardness, wear resistance at $500^{\circ}C$, and the oxidation behaviours at $700^{\circ}C$, Duplex process on H13 steel had created duplex layer of approximately $190\mu\textrm{m}$ on the surface, and surface microhardness was measured to be above 1450Hv(0.1Kgf). There was considerable improvement of the high temperature wear resistance at $500^{\circ}C$ in the duplex-treated steel when both wear volume and weight change due to oxidation were considered. In addition the duplex-treated steel showed an improved high temperature oxidation resistance than the plasma nitrided steel at $700^{\circ}C$.
Tappet has wear problems like scuffing or pitting because of high Hertzian contact stress by line contact type between cam and tappet. To overcome this wear problems, we developed the high wear resistant tappet. Developed tappet consists of WC base alloyed tip and steel body. These two parts were directly bonded each other at high temperature under vacuum condition. To estimate the wear resistance of tungsten carbide tappet, we perform the scuffing test and engine dynamo test. As the result, tungsten carbide tappet has better wear resistance than conventionally chilled iron tappet.
In order to enhance the thermal stability of binder materials of bonded type solid lubricants, several metal-alkoxide based sol-gel materials such as methyltrimethoxysilane(MTMOS), titaniumisopropoxide (Ti(Opr$\^$i/)$_4$), zirconiumisopropoxide (Zr(Opr$\^$i/)$_4$) and aluminumbutoxide (Al(Obu$\^$t/)$_4$) were modified chemically by both epoxy and acrylic silane compounds. Friction and wear characteristics of the bonded solid lubricants, whose binders were of several hybrid ceramic materials, were tested with a reciprocating tribo-tester. Wear life was evaluated with respect to the heat-curing temperature, friction temperature, type of supplement lubricants, and ratio of binder materials. Test results showed that the Si-Zr hybrid ceramic materials modified by epoxy-silane compounds had a higher wear life compared to others. Sb$_2$O$_3$ was the most effective supplement lubricants in the high temperature, and BUS analyses revealed that it was caused mainly by a strong anti-oxidation effect to MoS$_2$ particles. The higher heat-curing temperature resulted in the higher wear life, and the higher friction temperature resulted in the lower wear life.
The sliding wear characteristics of carbon steel castings were Investigated using a ball on disk type tester. The experiment was conducted using high carbon steel wire rods as ball material and carbon steel castings as disk material and different operating conditions, at room temperature under a lubrication and dry conditions. The results showed that the carbon steel castings appeared average wear volume Is lowed after annealing under a lubrication conditions and wear curve linear Increased. The specific wear rate of carbon steel castings Increased with wire diameter lubrication and dry also Increased 125 times In Ory. The sliding wear mechanism were Investigated due to fatigue wear lubrications and abrasive wear dries also wire Included fatigue and abrasive wear by plastic flow.
The next-generation Molten Salt Reactor is known for its high safety because it uses nuclear fuel dissolved in high-temperature molten salt, unlike traditional solid atomic fuel methods. However, the high-temperature molten salt causes severe corrosion in internal structural materials, threatening the reactor's safety. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the high-temperature corrosion resistance and wear performance of materials used in reactors to ensure safety. In this study, the high-temperature corrosion resistances and wear performances of corrosion samples in a NaCl-MgCl2-KCl (20-40-40 [wt%]) molten salt are investigated to evaluate the applicability of economically viable stainless steels, 316SS and 304SS. Hastelloy C276 and a new alloy containing a small amount of Nb are used as reference samples for comparative analysis. The mass loss, mass loss rate per unit volume, and surface roughness of each sample are measured to understand the corrosion mechanisms. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy analyses are employed to analyze the corrosion mechanisms. Wear tests on the corroded samples are also conducted to assess the extent of corrosion. Based on the experimental results, we predict the lifespans of the materials and evaluate their suitability as candidate materials for molten salt reactors. The data obtained from the experiments provide a valuable database for structural materials that can enhance the stability of molten salt reactors and recommend high-temperature corrosion-resistant materials suitable for next-generation reactors.
Recently, PTFE-polyimide composites are being used self-lubricating parts for industrial field. Thus, this study is mainly concerned with friction and wear properties for the piston ring of non-lubricating air compressor which made of PTFE-polyimide composites. The friction and wear test was carried out for the different composition ratio under the atmosphere room temperature and constant load of 7.69N and their friction and wear properties were compared with each other at various sliding speed. Notable results are summarized as follows. PTFE 100% showed that friction coefficient was almost same values at 0.94 and 1.88m/s but the value was decreased at 2.83m/s because the friction temperature is higher than low speed. PTFE 80%-PI 20% showed the lowest mean friction coefficient at 2.83m/s. PTFE 20%-PI 80% showed the highest friction coefficient at 0.94m/s and the value was decreased at high speed but the value is higher than other materials except PTFE 100 %. PI 100% showed the highest friction coefficient at 0.94 and 1.88m/s because adhesive wear mainly occurred that speed. PTFE 100% showed highest specific wear rate on the whole. Specific wear rate of PTFE 80%-PI 20% was almost the same value with PTFE 20%-PI 80%. PI 100% showed the lowest value at high sliding speed because the friction surface was thicken and carbonated by high friction temperature.
In Li0.4Ca0.05AlP0.5Si0.75O4.5 composition glass, glass-ceramic having a near 100% crystallinity after nucleation heat treatment of 74$0^{\circ}C$/2 h and crystallization heat treatment of 90$0^{\circ}C$/2 h and in-situ TiO2 whisker reinforced glass-ceramic after heat treatment of 105$0^{\circ}C$ for 20 h were fabricated with the addition of 4% TiO2 as a nucleating agent. With these materials a ball-on-disc type wear test was conducted in order to examine the effect of TiO2 whisker prepcipitation on ambient and high temperature wear properties of the glass-ceramic. Wear test results indicated that all specimens exhibited micro-fracture wear mechanism in ambient temperature. As temperature increased the wear rates of the materials were increased. However the in-situ TiO2 whisker reinforced glass-ceramic exhibited the lowest wear rate over the test temperature range. This resulted from the improvement of harness and fracture toughness of the material as the glass converted into the glass-ceramic followed by precipitation of TiO2 whiskers throughout the glass-ceramic matrix.
A pin-on-disk test is performed to measure the wear volume of a ductile cast iron (DCI) roll when it wears down using a high carbon steel and two alloy steels at different sliding velocities between the roll and the material (steel). Normal pressure is set as constant and test temperatures are 400, 500 and $600^{\circ}C$. In addition, thermal softening behavior of the DCI roll is examined using a high-temperature micro-hardness tester and the surface hardness variation of the DCI roll is expressed in terms of temperature and heating time. Based on experimental data, a wear coefficient used in Archard's wear model for each material is obtained. The wear volume is clearly observed when the test temperature is $400^{\circ}C$ and sliding velocity varies. However, it is not measured at temperatures of $500^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$ even with variations in sliding velocity. From the optical photographs of the pin and disk, the abrasive wear is observed at $400^{\circ}C$ clearly, but no at $500^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. At higher temperatures, the pin surface is not smooth and has many tiny caves distributed on it. It is found that wear volume is dependent on the carbon contents rather than alloy contents. Results also reveal that the variations of wear coefficients are almost linearly proportional to the carbon contents of the material.
