  • The interaction and detergency between oily soil and surfactant solution were studied Samples used were tristearin, tripalmitin and their mixture as a triglyceride, myristic acid as a fatty acid and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as surfactant. The results were as follows: 1. The mixtures of model oily soils were formed of eutectic point and their melting point were lower than them of individual oily soils. 2. The formation of liquid crystalline (LC) phase was recognized in the triangle phase diagram for SDS~ water~model oily soil system. The areas of LC phase region were in the order of SHS~ water~myristir acid> SDS~ water~mixture of tristearin, tripalmitin and myristic acid (TS/TP/M)>SDS~water~mixture of tristearin and tripalmitin (TS/TP) 3. The LC phase region expanded to wide concentration range of SDS solution and high concentration range of model oily soil with increasing temperature. Particularity, the LC phase region expanded highly at $30~40^{\circ}C$ but when the temperature was elevated above $40^{\circ}C$, expanding tendency decreased. 4. In the system of myristic acid and TS/TP/M contacted with SDS solution, the LC phase was already formed at $28^{\circ}C$ and the region of the LC phase were expanded with increasing temperature. But in the system of TS/TP contacted with SDS solution, the LC phase was not formed in whole experiment temperature. 5. The detergency of myristic acid was very high ann it was recognized that the formation of the LC phase played an important role in the detergency. The detergency of TS/TP was very for low, but when TS/TF was mixed with myristic acid, the detergency of TS/TP increased. It is supposed that the LC phase was formed butween SDS solution and myristic acid promoted to penetration of SDS solution into the inner parts of TS/TP.

  • Microstructure and mechanical properties of Fe-Si-Mn-P high strength steel sheet have been investigated by controlling the cooling rate. Bainite and ferrite were obtatined by annealing in the ferrite pluse austenite region, and ferrite and austenite were obtatined after annealing in the fully austenite region. Ferrite and pearlite were obtained when the cooling rate was controlled from the annealing temperature above $760^{\circ}C$ and bainite showed with increasing cooling rate, however below $760^{\circ}C$ ferrite and bainite were obtained. Tensile strengths and hardness nearly unchanged with increasing cooling rate after control the cooling rate from the temperature above $760^{\circ}C$, while tensile strengths increased and elongation decreased with increasing cooling rate when the cooling rate was controlled from the tempeature below $760^{\circ}C$. Without regard to annealing temperature, tensile strength increased and elongation decreased with increasing cooling rate. Tensile strengths and elongation values heat treated in the ferrite plus austenite region were higher than those in the fully austenite region. Retained austenite and strength-elongation balance showed the maximum value at $780^{\circ}C$ and decreased with increasing annealing temperature. Strength-elongation balance value was controlled by the retained austenite.

  • The study was carried out to examine in more detail metallurgical and mechanical properties of brazed joints of diamond cutting wheel. In this work, shank(mild steel) and sintered bronze-base tips were brazed with three different filler materials(W-40, BAgl and BAg3S). The machine used in this work was a high frequency induction brazing equipment. The joint thickness, porosities and microstructure of brazed joints with brazing variables(brazing temperature, holding time) were evaluated with OLM, SEM, EDS and XRD. Bending(torque) test was also performed to evaluate strength of brazed joints. Further wetting test was performed in a vacuum furnace in order to evaluate the wettability of filler metals on base metals9shank and tips). The brazing temperature had a strong influence on the joint strength and the optimum brazing temperature range was about $700~850^{\circ}C$ for the bronze/steel combinations. The strength of the brazed joint was found to be influenced by the three factors : degree of reaction region, porosity content, joint thickness. The reaction region was formed in the bronze-base tip adjacent to the joint. The reaction region resulted in a bad influence on the strength due to the formation of Cu5.6Sn, CuZn4, $\beta(CuZn)$ and CdAg, etc. Porosities increased as brazing variables(brazing temperature, holding time) increased, and the brazed joints with porosities of less than about 3-5% had an optimum strength for the bronze-base tip.

  • The ocean is linked to long-term climate variability, but there are very few methods to assess the short-term performance of forecast models. This study analyzes the short-term prediction performance regarding ocean temperature and salinity of the Global Seasonal prediction system version 5 (GloSea5). GloSea5 is a historical climate re-creation (2001-2010) performed on the 1st, 9th, 17th, and 25th of each month. It comprises three ensembles. High-resolution hindcasts from the three ensembles were compared with the Array for Real-Time Geostrophic Oceanography (ARGO) float data for the period 2001-2010. The horizontal position was preprocessed to match the ARGO float data and the vertical layer to the GloSea5 data. The root mean square error (RMSE), Brier Score (BS), and Brier Skill Score (BSS) were calculated for short-term forecast periods with a lead-time of 10 days. The results show that sea surface temperature (SST) has a large RMSE in the western boundary current region in Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and Antarctic Circumpolar Current region, and sea surface salinity (SSS) has significant errors in the tropics with high precipitation, with both variables having the largest errors in the Atlantic. SST and SSS had larger errors during the fall for the NINO3.4 region and during the summer for the East Sea. Computing the BS and BSS for ocean temperature and salinity in the NINO3.4 region revealed that forecast skill decreases with increasing lead-time for SST, but not for SSS. The preprocessing of GloSea5 forecasts to match the ARGO float data applied in this study, and the evaluation methods for forecast models using the BS and BSS, could be applied to evaluate other forecast models and/or variables.

  • The East Asia monsoon is one of the most complex atmospheric phenomena caused by Land-Sea thermal contrast. It plays essential role in fulfilling the water needs of the region but also poses stern consequences in terms of flooding and droughts. This study analyzed the influence of Global Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies (SSTA) on occurrence of droughts in the East Asia monsoon region ($20^{\circ}N-50^{\circ}N$, $103^{\circ}E-149^{\circ}E$). Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was employed to characterize the droughts over the region using 30-year (1978-2007) gridded rainfall dataset at $0.5^{\circ}$ grid resolution. Due to high variability in intensity and spatial extent of monsoon rainfall the East Asia monsoon region was divided into the homogeneous rainfall zones using cluster analysis method. Seven zones were delineated that showed unique rainfall regimes over the region. The influence of SSTA was assessed by using lagged-correlation between global gridded SSTA ($0.2^{\circ}$ grid resolution) and SPI of each zone. Sea regions with potential influence on droughts in different zones were identified based on significant positive and negative correlation between SSTA and SPI with a lag period of 3-month. The results showed that SSTA have the potential to be used as predictor variables for prediction of droughts with a reasonable lead time. The findings of this study will assist to improve the drought prediction over the region.

  • A thermal conductivity correlation has been proposed which can be applied to high turnup fuel by considering both of thermal conductivity with turnup across fuel pellet and additional degradation at pellet rim due to very high porosity. In addition, a correlation has been developed that can estimate the porosity of rim region as a function of rim burnup under the assumptions that all the produced fission gases are retained in the in porosity and threshold pellet average burnup required for the formation of rim region is 40 MWD/㎏U. Rim width is correlated to rim burnup using measured data. For the RISO experimental data obtained at pellet average turnup of 43.5 MWD/㎏U for three linear heat generation rates of 30, 35 and 40 ㎾/m, radial temperature distributions ore calculated using the present correlation and compared with the measured ones. This comparison shows that the present correlation gives the best agreement with the measured data when it is combined with the HALDEN's correlation for thermal conductivity considering its degradation with burnup. Another comparison with the HALDEN's measured fuel centerline temperature as a function of burnup at 25 ㎾/m up to about 44 MWD/㎾U also suggest that the present correlation yields the best agreement when it is combined with the HALDEN's thermal conductivity.

  • A high-temperature sodium stainless steel heat pipe was fabricated and its performance has been investigated. The working fluid was sodium and it was sealed inside a straight tube container made of stainless steel. The amount of sodium occupied approximately 20% of the total volume of the heat pipe and its weight was 65.7gram. The length of a stainless steel container is 1002mm and its outside diameter is 25.4mm. Performance tests were carried out in a room air condition under a free convective environment and the measured temperatures are presented. The start-up behavior of the heat pipe from a frozen state was investigated for various heat input values between 600W and 1205W. In steady state, axial temperature distributions of a heat pipe were measured and its heat transfer rates were estimated in the range of vapor temperature from 50$0^{\circ}C$ to 63$0^{\circ}C$. It is found that there are small temperature differences in the vapor core along the axial direction of a sodium heat pipe for the high operating temperatures. But for the range of low operating temperatures there are large temperature drops along the vapor core region of a sodium heat pipe, because a small vapor pressure drop makes a large temperature drop. The transition temperature was reached more rapidly in the cases of high heat input rate for the sodium heat pipe.

  • Environmental stresses caused by climate change, such as high temperature, drought and salinity severely impact plant growth and productivity. Among these factors, high temperature stress will become more severe during summer. In this study, we examined physiological and molecular responses of maize plants to high temperature stress during summer. Highest level of $H_2O_2$ was observed in maize leaves collected July 26 compared with June 25 and July 12. Results indicated that high temperature stress triggers production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in maize leaves. In addition, photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm) sharply decreased in leaves with increasing air temperatures during the day in the field. RT-PCR analysis of maize plants exposed to high temperatures of during the day in field revealed increased accumulation of mitochondrial and chloroplastic small heat shock protein (HSP) transcripts. Results demonstrate that Fv/Fm values and organelle-localized small HSP gene could be used as physiological and molecular indicators of plants impacted by environmental stresses.

  • SiC power device possesses attractive features, such as high breakdown voltage, high-speed switching capability, and high temperature operation. In general, device design has a significant effect on the switching characteristics. It is known that in SiC power MOSFET, the JFET region width is one of the most important parameters. In this paper, we demonstrated that the switching performance of DMOSFET is dependent on the with width of the JFET region by using 2-D Mixed-mode simulations. The 4H-SiC DMOSFETs with a JFET region designed to block 800 V were optimized for minimum loss by adjusting the parameters of the n JFET region, CSL, and n-drift layer. It has been found that the JFET region reduces specific on-resistance and therefore the switching characteristics depend on the JFET region.
