In this study, CT specimens were prepared from spring steel(SUP9) which was used in suspension of automobile for room temperature and low temperature service. We got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room temperature and low temperature at $25^{\circ}C$, 3$0^{\circ}C$, 5$0^{\circ}C$, 7$0^{\circ}C$ and 10$0^{\circ}C$ in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 by means of opening mode displacement. The threshold stress intensity factor range ΔKth in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I) and stress intensity factor range ΔK in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) was decreased in proportion to descend temperature. It is assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature and high temperature is considerable higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region.
In this study, CT specimens were prepared from spring steel(SUP9) processed shot peening which was room temperature and low temperature experiment. And we got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room temperature and low temperature at $25^{\circ}C$, $-30^{\circ}C$, $-50^{\circ}C$, $-70^{\circ}C$,$-100^{\circ}C$, and $-150^{\circ}C$, in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 by means of opening mode displacement. The threshold stress intensity factor range ΔKth in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I)was increased but stress intensity factor range ΔK in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) was decreased in proportion to decrease temperature. It is assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature and high temperature is considerably higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region.
Strength evaluation was carried out for the cylinder liner of a low-speed marine engine. Calculation of temperature distribution, nonlinear structural analysis, material test, and fatigue strength evaluation are briefly introduced in this paper. Strengths of five liner models are compared, and the effect of materials experiencing different heat treatment is evaluated. Structural analysis including boundary and material non-linearities was performed for axisymmetric liner models. High cycle (fatigue limit) and low cycle (fatigue life) fatigue analyses are carried out. As results, localized high stress was occurred next to the mount line. Maximum stresses are varied significantly with respect to different liner models and different materials.
The thermal shock and thermal fatigue test has been carried out to analyze the thermal characteristics of tool steels for hot forging and the effects of mechanical properties on this study have been investigated. The resistance to thermal shock is first of all a matter of good toughness and ductility. Therefore, a proper hot-work tool steel should be characterized by high fracture strength and high temperature toughness. Based on these results, some critical temperature($T_{fracture}$) at which fracture occur can be measured to characterize the thermal resistance of the materials. During thermal fatigue tests, the thermal fatigue cracks occur because of the repetitive heating and cooling of the die surface and the thermal fatigue damage was evaluated by analyzing different number of cycles to failure. The results showed that the resistance to thermal shock and thermal fatigue were found to be favoured by high hot tensile strength and high hot hardness, and thermal resistance of SKD61 was superior to that of ESC, SKT4 and this was caused by higher mechanical properties of SKD61.
Low cycle fatigue tests are performed on high strength low alloy steels that be developed for submarine material. The relation between absorbed plastic strain energy and numbers of cycle to failure is examined in order to predict the low cycle fatigue life of structural steels by using plastic strain energy method. The cyclic properties are determined by a least square fit techniques. The life predicted by the plastic strain energy method is found to coincide with experiment data and results obtained from the Coffin-Manson method. Also the cyclic behavior of structural steels is characterized by cyclic softening with increasing number of cycle at room temperature. Especially, low cycle fatigue characteristics and microstructural changes of structural steels are investigated according to changing tempering temperatures. In the case of PFS steels, the $\varepsilon$-Cu is formed in 550C of tempering temperature and enhances the low cycle fatigue properties.
Liquid natural gas is stored and transported inside cargo tank which is made of specially designed cryogenic materials such as 9% Ni steel, Al5083-O alloy and SUS304 and so on. The materials have to keep excellent ductile characteristics under the cryogenic environment, down to -163oC, in order to avoid the catastrophic sudden brittle fracture during the operation condition. High manganese steel is considered to be the promising alternative material that can replace the commonly used materials mentioned above owing to its cost effectiveness. In line with this industrial need, the mechanical properties of the high manganese steel under both room and cryogenic environment were investigated in this study focused on its tensile and fatigue behavior. In terms of the tensile strength, the ultimate tensile strength of the base material of the high manganese steel was comparable to the existing cryogenic materials, but it turned out to be undermatched one when welding is involved in. The fatigue strength of the high manganese steel under room temperature was as good as other cryogenic materials, but under cryogenic environment, slightly less than others though better than Al 5083-O alloy.
This study was undertaken to determine tensile properties and low-cycle fatigue behavior of 0.6%C high carbon steel used of structural purposes at temperatures up to 500.deg.C. In the low-cycle fatigue test the upper limit was decided by elongation(i.e. the total strain range), while the lower limit was defined by the load (i.e. zero load). The following results were obtained. Both, the ultimate tensile strength and low-cycle fatigue resistance attain the maximum values near 250.deg.C. Above this temperature the values decrease rapidly as the temperature increases. The low-cycle fatigue resistance decreases whenever there is an increase of the total strain range. Because the hardness of cycle fatigued specimen correlates cyclic hardening and cyclic softening, therefore the hardness of cycle fatigued specimen is smaller than that of the nonfatigued specimen at room temperature and 500.deg.C but much larger than the hardness of the nonfatigued specimen near 250.deg.C.

The lightness of components required in automobile and machinery industries is requiring high strength of components. Therefore this requirement is accomplished as the process of shot-peening method that the compressive residual stress is made on the metal surface as one of various improvement methods. Special research is, therefore, needed about compressive residual stress on the metal surface in the process of shot-peening method. Therefore, in this paper the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9) by shot-peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in environmental condition(temperature) and mechanical condition(shot velocity, stress ratio) was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. By using the methods mentioned above, the following conclusions have been drawn. (1) The fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) of the shot-peened material was lower than that of the un-peened one. In high temperature range. fatigue crack growth rate decreased with increasing temperature range, while fatigue crack growth rate increased by decreasing temperature in low temperature. (2) Fatigue life shows more improvement in the shot-peened material than in the un-peened material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the shot-peen processed operate resistance force of fatigue crack propagation.
According to previous research, welding-induced residual stresses in steel structures can significantly affect the fatigue behaviour. Usually, high tensile residual stresses up to the yield strength are conservatively assumed at the weld toes. This conservative assumption can result in misleading fatigue assessments. Thee welding-induced residual stresses need be known in advance for a reliable fatigue assessment, which becomes possible to an increasing extent by numerical welding simulation. In this study, a fatigue Analysis technique for steel structures with welding induced residual stress is presented. First, We calculate the history of temperature according with welding process. Secondly, residual stress with a welding thermal history was evaluated by non-linear thermal stress analysis and lastly, fatigue strength is estimated with modified Goodman equation which can consider the effect of mean stress level.
