  • This paper presents a new design method for improving the torque performance of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) for high speed applications. The drawback of the conventional design method based on the overall static average torque maximization is that the torque control performance is degraded at high speed. On the other hand, the proposed method optimizes the torque profile by diving it into several regions so that it is suitable for high speed operation. This multi-objective optimization problem is solved by using a fuzzy optimization algorithm which incorporates a finite element method. The torque performance of the motor for various speed ranges is investigated and the optimally designed motor show a better performance at high speed.

  • This paper deals with speed control of Sensorless DC servo motor using a FTHGO(FuzEy-Tuning High Gain observer). In this paper, we improved the problem from row speed section, the problem of sensor for detecting speed of motor, using FTHGO(Fuzzy-Tuning High-Gain Observer) with fuzzy control technique which is a class of adaptive control technique. In order to verify the performance of the FTHGO(Fuzzy-Tuning High Gain Observer) which is proposed in this paper, it is proved from the experiment to compare the case with a speed sensor to the case with FTHGO(Fuzzy-Tuning High Gain observer) in the speed control of DC servo motor.

  • The electric motor is essential to drive turbo machinery. In order to overcome the speed limitations of general motors, the inverter is used to perform high speed to tens of rpm. The high speed drives are widely used in many applications such as turbo blower, turbo centrifugal compressors, and pump using air bearing technique. Starting of high speed motor can cause step out, stall, oscillation of motor because the phase inductance is much smaller than that of ordinary motor. This paper studied on the starting characteristic of variable speed centrifugal chiller considering high speed motor characteristics. Finally, the superiority of the inverter is verified by experimental results.

  • In general, surface mounted PM synchronous motors (SPMSMs) are mainly adopted as a driving motor for high-speed applications, because they have high efficiency and high power density. However, the SPMSMs have some weak points such as the increase of magnetic reluctance and additional losses as a consequence of using a non-magnetic sleeve. Especially, the magneto-motive force (MMF) in the air-gap of the SPMSMs is weakened due to the magnetically increased resistance. For that reason, a large amount of PM is consumed to meet the required MMF. Nevertheless, it cannot help using the sleeve in order to maintain the mechanical integrity of a rotor assembly in high-speed rotation. Thus, in this paper, a multi-layer interior PM synchronous motor (IPMSM) not using the sleeve is presented and designed as an alternative of a SPMSM. Both motors are evaluated by test results based on a variety of characteristics required for an air blower system of a fuel cell electric vehicle.

  • On account of small size and light weight, a high-speed machine is regarded as a key technology for many future applications of drive systems. In high-speed applications, permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motors have a number of merits such as high efficiency and high power density. Accordingly, they are suitable for driving the air-blower of a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) where space and energy savings are critical. Particularly, a surface-mounted PM motor of them is mainly used as a high-speed machine. However, the motor has a fatal flaw owing to a retaining can to maintain the mechanical integrity of a rotor assembly. The can results in the increase of magnetic air-gap length in the surface-mounted PM motor. Thus, in this paper, an interior PM motor is designed in order to drive the air-blower of FCEV instead of the surface-mounted PM motor, and the experimental results of two models are compared to verify the capability of the interior PM motor for a high-speed machine.

  • Recently, the motor-integrated spindle systems have been used to simplify the machine tool structure, to improve the motion flexibility of machine tool, and to perform the high-speed machining. In this study, a static and dynamic analysis system for motor-integrated high-speed spindle systems is developed based on Timoshenko theory, finite element method and windows programming techniques. Since the system has various analysis modules related to static deformation analysis, modal analysis, frequency response analysis, unbalance response analysis and so on, it is useful in performing systematically the design and evaluation processes of motor-integrated high-speed spindle systems under windows GUI environment.

  • The EV electric vehicle market is growing rapidly worldwide. An electric vehicle means a vehicle that uses energy charged through an electricity source as power. The precision of the press is important to mass-produce the drive motor, which is a key component of the electric vehicle. The size of the driving motor is increasing, and The size of the mold is also growing. In this study, the precision of large high-speed presses for mass production of driving motors was measured. A study was conducted on the measurement method of press and the analysis of measurement data. A drive motor is a component that transmits power by converting electrical energy into kinetic energy. EV driven motors have key material properties to improve efficiency. The material properties are the thickness of the material. As a method for improving performance, use a 0.2mm thin steel sheet. Mold is also becoming larger. As the mold grows, the size of the high-speed press for mass production of the driving motor is also increasing. Also, the precision of the press is the most important because it uses a thin iron plate material. So the importance of large press precision is being emphasized. In this study, the effect of large high-speed press structure on precision was verified

  • Recently, the interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors for electric vehicle (EV) traction motor are being extensively researched because of its high energy density and high efficiency. The traction motor for EV requires high power and high efficiency at the wide driving region. Therefore, it is essential to fully consider the characteristics of the motor from low speed to high-speed driving regions. Especially, when the motor is driven at high speed, a significant centrifugal force is applied to the rotor. Thus, the rotor must be stably structured and be fully endured at the critical speed. In this paper, aims to examine the characteristics of the IPM motor by adjusting the width of air-barrier according to the permanent magnet position which is critical in designing an IPM motor for EV traction motors and to conduct a centrifugal force analysis for grasping mechanical safety.

  • This paper proposes a field-oriented control strategy without speed sensor in overall speed range. At low speed region including zero speed, the electrical saliency which is due to the main flux saturation is used in order to estimate an instantaneous flux position. This electrical saliency can be obtained from the difference of high frequency impedance by the high frequency signal injection. This method enables the stable operation at zero speed or stator frequency even under heavily loaded condition. However, because of the high frequency signal injection the loss and noise in motor increase and the voltage margin is reduced as the motor speed increases. Therefore, this algorithm must be supplemented with the algorithm based on the electrical model of motor, which is conventionally used in the region except the low speed. This paper proposes the combination algorithm between the high frequency signal infection method and the adaptive observer, in which the rotor flux and motor speed can be simultaneously estimated by the adaptive control theory. This combination algorithm enables the stable operation of field-oriented speed control without speed sensor in overall speed range. This is verified by experimental results.
