  • Adaptive optics (AO) has been applied in various fields including astronomy, ophthalmology and high power laser systems. An adaptive optics system for a high power laser is not significantly different from other AO systems in the point of configuration except that high energy absorbed by the deformable mirror distorts the deformable mirror surface and so degrades system performance. Currently we are researching a bimorph deformable mirror for beam cleaning of a high power class laser. The bimorph mirror was considered to have 99% reflective coating and 1% absorption. So this paper first presents the temperature profiles and corresponding thermal distortions of the bimorph mirror faceplate when the mirror is under a high power lasing for 10 seconds. The analysis was accomplished by the use of finite difference and finite element computer programs to generate the element arrays, calculate the temperature profiles, and determine the structural deformations. Then this paper proposes an 'embedded wafer' type water-cooling system with derived cooling parameters.

  • A new chip on glass(COG) technique by making use of a high power diode laser for LCD driver IC packaging of LCD has been developed. A laser joining technology of the connection of IC chip to glass panel has several advantages over conventional method such as hot plate joining: shorter process time, high reliability of joining, and better fur fine pitch joining. The reach time to cure temperature of ACF in laser joining is within 1 second. In this study, results show that the total process time of joining is reduced by halves than that of conventional method. The adhesion strength is mainly 100-250 N/cm. It is confirmed that the COG technology using high power diode laser joining can be applied to advanced LCDs with a fine pitch.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of process parameters, such as power of laser, travel speed of laser and material thickness, on the practical cutting region and the kerfwidth for the case of cutting of CSP 1N sheet using high power Nd:YAG laser with continuous wave(CW). In order to find the practical cutting region and the relationship between process parameters on the kerfwidth, several laser cutting experiments are carried out. The effective heat input is introduced to consider the influence of power and travel speed of laser on the kerfwidth together. From the results of experiments, the allowable cutting region and the relationship between the effective heat input and kerfwidth for the case of cutting of CSP 1N sheet using high power CW Nd:YAG laser have been obtained to improve the dimensional accuracy of the cut area.

  • In this study, a compact, picosecond, mid-infrared 3.8 ㎛ MgO:PPLN optical parametric oscillator (OPO) laser output with high peak power is realized using a master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) 1 ㎛ solid-state laser seeded by a picosecond fiber laser as the pump source. The pump source was a 50 MHz and 10 ps fiber seed source. After AOM pulse selection and two-stage solid-state amplification, a 1,064 nm laser output with a repetition frequency of 1-2 MHz, pulse width of 9.5 ps, and a maximum average power of 20 W was achieved. Furthermore, a compact short cavity with a unsynchronized pump is adopted through the design of an OPO cavity structure. When the injection pump power was 15 W and the repetition frequency was 1 MHz, the average output power of idler light was 1.19 W, and the corresponding peak power was 119 kW. The optical conversion efficiency was 7.93%. When the repetition frequency was increased to 2 MHz, the average output power of idler light was 1.63 W, the corresponding peak power was 81.5 kW, and the optical conversion efficiency was 10.87%. At the same time, the output wavelength was measured at 3,806 nm, and the beam quality was MX2 = 3.21 and MY2 = 3.34.

  • The high power glass laser system was designed and constracted which consisted of a TEM$\_$00/ mode Q-switching oscillator, a pulse shaping, system, two-stage pre-amplifiers, five-stage main amplifiers, a Faraday rotator, and a uni-guide slit. The laser output of 3OGW with the pulsewidth of 2 nsec was obtained by performing the amplifiing experiment in this system. When the laser light with the pulsewidth of 10 nsec was amplified, the large factor of amplification was obtained in the beginning of pulse, but the factor of amplification decreased gradually in the later part of pulse. Therefore, the laser light which has short pulsewidth of-2nsec must be amplified in order to obtain the larger factor of amplification. When the laser beam from the high power glass laser system was irradiated to plasma, the reflected laser light from plasma which occured inevitably could be attenuated to the order of 10$\^$-4/ by using the Faraday rotator and the uni-guide slit.

  • In this work, the high power CW Nd:YAG laser has been used for thermal treatment of inkjet printed Ag films-involving eliminating organic additives (dispersant, binder, and organic solvent) of Ag ink and annealing Ag nanoparticles. By optimizing laser parameters, such as laser power and defocusing value, the laser energy can totally be converted to heat energy, which is used to thermal treatment of inkjet printed Ag films. This results in controlling the microstructures and the resistivity of films. We investigated the thermal diffusion mechanisms during laser annealing and the resulting microstructures. The impact of high power laser annealing on microstructures and electrical characteristic of inkjet printed Ag films is compared to those of the films annealed by a conventional furnace annealing. Focused ion beam (FIB) channeling image shows that the laser annealed Ag films have large columnar grains and dense structure (void free), while furnace annealed films have tiny grains and exhibit void formation. Due to these microstructural characteristics of laser annealed films, it has better electrical property (low resistivity) compared to furnace annealed samples.

  • For the stabilization of laser output power and wavelength of the high power fiber laser, the cooling plate must be properly taken into account. In this study, three analyzing methods which are heat transfer theory, CFD and experiment are used to analyze cooling plate performance by measuring pump Laser Diode(LD) temperature. Under limited operating conditions of a cooling plate, the internal flow of cooling plate is transitional flow so that the internal flow is assumed to be laminar and turbulence flow and conducted theoretical calculation. Through CFD, temperature of pump LD and characteristics of the internal flow were analyzed. By the experiment, temperature of pump LD was measured in real conditions and the performance of the cooling plate was verified. The results of this study indicate that three analyzing methods are practically useful to design the cooling plate for the high power fiber laser or similar things.

  • The high-power Nd:glass system with five-stage amplifier was designed and its amplification characteristics was studied for developing high-power Nd:glass laser system as an energy driver of inertial confinement fusion(ICF). In order to study the amplification characteristics of remporal and spacial Gaussian laser beam, the dependence of them on pumping efficiency and rod loss were studied and discussed. The output energy of this system using phosphate Nd glass rod(LHG-7,LHG-8) and silicate Nd glass rod(LSG-91H), respectively, was calculated by the computer simulation using Avizonis-Grotbeck and Frantz Nodvik equations. As results of this simulation, it was found that the shorter the risetime of laser pulse, the larger the amplification factor and that the larger peak value of laser pulse, the lower the amplification factor. The output inergies of 179J, 344J, and 7J were obtained by the designed five-stage amplified high-power Nd:glass laser system using glass rods of LHG-7,LHG-8, and LSG-91H, respectively. From the results it was found that the laser system using the LHG-8 glass rod was the most excellent one among the systems and the cross section for stimulated emission of the gain coefficient was essentially important parameter for the amplification characteristics.
