  • Diode laser absorption sensors are advantageous because they may provide fast, sensitive, absolute, and selective measurements of species concentration. These systems are very attractive for practical applications owing to its compactness, resonable cost, robustness, and ease of use. In addition, diode lasers are fiber-optic compatible and thus enable simultaneous measurements of multiple species along a line-of-sight. Recent advances of room-temperature, near-IR and visible diode laser sources for telecommunication, optical data storage applications make it possible to be applied for combustion diagnostics based on diode laser absorption spectroscopy. Therefore, combined with fiber-optics and high sensitive detection strategies, compact and portable sensor systems are now appearing for variety of applications. The objectives of this research are to develope a new gas sensing system and to verify feasibility of this system. Wavelength and power characteristics as a function of injection current and temperature are experimentally found out. Direct absorption spectroscopy has been demonstrated in these experiments and has a bright prospect to this diode laser system.

  • This thesis is on tile development of LD(Laser Diode) chip tester and the control system based on graphical programming language(LabVIEW) to control the equipment. The LD chip tester is used to test the optic power and the optic spectrum of the LD Chip. The emitter size of LD chip and the diameter of the receiver(optic fiber) are very small. Therefore, in order to test each chip precisely, this tester needs high accuracy. However each motion part of the tester could not accomplish hish accuracy due to the limit of the mechanical performance. Hence. an image processing with machine vision was carried out in order to compensate for the error. and also a load test was carried out so as to reduce tile impact of load on chip while the probing motion device is working. The obtained results were within ${\pm}$5$\mu\textrm{m}$ error.

  • With the increasing use of high-power laser diode bars (LDBs) and stacked LDBs, the issue of thermal control has become critical, as temperature is related to device efficiency and lifetime, as well as to beam quality. To improve the thermal resistance of an LDB set, we propose and analyze a bypass heat sink with a top canopy structure for an LDB set, instead of adopting a thick submount. The thermal bypassing in the top-canopy structure is efficient, as it avoids the cross-sectional thermal saturation that may exist in a thick submount. The efficient thickness range of the submount in a typical LDB set is guided by the thermal resistance as a function of thickness, and the simulated bypassing efficiency of a canopy is higher than a simple analytical prediction, especially for thinner canopies.

  • Laser Transformation Hardening(LTH) is one branch of the laser surface modification processes. A lot of energy is needed for the LTH process to elevate workpiece surface to temperature of the austenite transformation($A_3$), which results from utilizing a beam with a larger size and lower power density comparatively. This study is related to the surface hardening for the rod-shaped carbon steel by the high power diode laser whose beam absorptivity is better than conventional types of lasers such as $CO_2$ or Nd:YAG laser. Because a beam proceeds on the rotating specimen, the pretreated hardened-phase can be tempered and softened by the overlapping between hardened tracks. Accordingly, the longitudinal hardness measurement and observation of the micro structure was carried out for an assessment of the hardening characteristics. In addition, a hardening characteristics as a hardenability of materials was compared in the point of view of the hardness distribution and hardening depth and width.

  • Recently, lots of automobile part manufacturers try to increase glass fiber content of their plastic parts to improve strength and impact-resistance. For this reason, injection mold requires high hardness and wear-resistant. Laser surface treatment is used to improve characteristics of wear and to enhance the fatigue resistance for injection mold. In this paper, high carbon steel (HP4MA) for injection mold material was heat-treated to harden surface by using high power diode laser (HPDL). To find the process parameters for laser surface treatment of HP4MA, many experiments are carried out as changing the parameters of surface temperature and travel speed of laser. From the results of the experiments, it has been shown that the maximum average hardness is approximately 711~739 Hv when the temperature and the travel of laser are $1,050^{\circ}C$ and 2 mm/sec.

  • The laser material processing has replaced a conventional material processing such as a welding, cutting, drilling and surface modification and so on. LTH(Laser Transformation Hardening) is one branch of the laser surface modification process. A lot of energy is needed for the LTH process to elevate workpiece surface to temperature of the austenite transformation($A_3$), which results from utilizing a beam with a larger size and lower power intensity comparatively. The absorptivity of the laser energy with respect to material depends on the wave length of a beam. This study is related to the surface hardening for the rod-shaped carbon steel by the high power diode laser(HPDL) whose beam absorptivity is better than conventional types of lasers such as $CO_2$ or Nd:YAG laser. • Recently, metal molding has become essential not only for automobile parts, but also mass production, and has greatly influenced production costs as well as the quality of products. Its surface has been treated by carburizing, nitriding and induction hardening, but these existing treatments cause considerable deformation and increase the expense of postprocessing after treatment; furthermore, these treatments cannot be easily applied to parts that requiring the hardening of only a certain section. This is because the treatment cannot heat the material homogeneously, nor can it heat all of it. Laser surface treatment was developed to overcome these disadvantages, and, when the laser beam is irradiated on the surface and laser speed is appropriate, the laser focal position is rapidly heated and the thermal energy of surface penetrates the material after irradiation, finally imbuing it with a new mechanical characteristic by the process of self-quenching. This research estimates the material characteristic after efficient and functional surface treatment using HPDL, which is more efficient than the existing CW Nd:YAG laser heat source. To estimate this, microstructural changes and hardness characteristics of three parts (the surface treatment part, heat affect zone, and parental material) are observed with the change of laser beam speed and surface temperature. Moreover, the depth of the hardened area is observed with the change of the laser beam speed and temperature.

  • A novel fiber-optic sensor system is suggested in which fiber Bragg grating sensors are demodulated by a wavelength-sweeping fiber laser source and a spectrometer. The spectrometer consists of a diffraction grating and a 512-pixel photo-diode array. The reflected Bragg wavelength information is transformed into spatial intensity distribution on the photo-diode array. The peak locations linearly correspond to the Bragg wavelengths, regardless of the nonlinearities in the wavelength tuning mechanism of the fiber laser. The high power density of the fiber laser enables obtaining high signal-to-noise ratio outputs. The improved demodulation characteristics were experimentally demonstrated with a fiber Bragg grating sensor array with 5 gratings. The sensor outputs were in much more linear fashion compared with the conventional tunable band-pass filter demodulation. Also it showed advantages in signal processing, due to the high level of photo-diode array signals, over the broadband light source system, especially in measurement of fast varying dynamic physical quantities.

  • We report on a diode-laser-pumped mode-locked Yb:KGW laser system, which delivers ultrashort pulses down to 89 fs at a repetition rate of 63 MHz, with an average power of up to 5.6 W. A fiber-coupled diode laser at 981 nm, operated with a compact driver, is used to optically pump the gain crystal via an off-axis parabolic mirror. A semiconductor saturable-absorber mirror is used to initiate the pulsed operation. Laser characteristics such as the pulse duration, spectrum bandwidth, and output power are investigated by varying the intracavity dispersions via changing the number of bounces between negative-dispersive mirrors within the cavity. Short pulses with a duration of 89 fs, a center wavelength of 1,027 nm, and 3.6 W of output power are produced at a group-velocity dispersion (GVD) of -3,300 fs2. As the negative GVD increases, the pulse duration lengthens but the output power at the single-pulse condition can be enhanced, reaching 5.6 W at a GVD of -6,600 fs2. Because of pulse broadening at high negative GVDs, the highest peak intensity is achievable at a moderate GVD with our system.
