  • To investigate aerodynamic performance of high-lift devices, 2D design is the base of the success of high-lift system design for transport aircraft, which can shorten the periods of three-dimensional design and analysis. For the simulation coupled viscous and inviscous euler method (MSES) is used. In this parametric study, Gap and Overlap which can define position of flap is used as design variables and we investigale relation between angle of attack and flap position for lift enhancement.

  • The path of a flapping airfoil during upstroke and down-stroke is optimized for maximum thrust and propulsive efficiency. The periodic flapping motion in combined pitch and plunge is described using Non-Uniform B-Splines(NURBS). A gradient based algorithm is employed for optimization of the NURBS parameters. Unsteady, low speed laminar flows are computed using a Navier-Stokes solver in a parallel computing environment based on domain decomposition. It is shown that the thrust generation is significantly improved in comparison to the sinusoidal flapping motion. For a high thrust generation, the airfoil stays at a high effective angle of attack for short durations.

  • The wake geometries of a two-bladed rotor in axial flights using a time-marching free-wake method without a non-physical model of the far wake are calculated. The computed free-wake geometries of AH-1G model rotor in climb flight are compared with the experimental visualization results. The time-marching free-wake method can predict the behavior of the tip vortex and the wake roil-up phenomena with remarkable agreements. Tip vortices shed from the two-bladed rotor can interact with each other significantly. The interaction consists of a turn of the tip vortex from one blade rolling around the tip vortex from the other. Wake expansion of wake geometries in radial direction after the contraction is a result of adjacent tip vortices begging to pair together and spiral about each other. Detailed numerical results show regular pairing phenomenon in the climb flights, the hover at high angle of attack and slow descent flight too. On the contrary, unstable motions of wake are observed numerically in the hover at low angle of attack and fast descent flight. It is because of the inherent wake instability and blade-vortex-interaction rather then the effect of recirculation due to the experimental equipment.

  • Maneuverability of ships has been receiving a great deal of attention both concerning navigation safety and the prediction of ship maneuvering characteristics, to improve it. High-lift device could be applied to design of rudder at design stage. Now, we carried out the flow visualization and inversitgation of flow around a flap rudder (trailing-edge flap). Flow visualization results of flap defection shown as the flow around a NACA0020 Flap Rudder will be conducted in a Circulating Water Channel. The purpose of this investigation will be to investigate the development of the separation region on the flap rudder with the variation of angle of attack and determine the angle of attack at which the flow separates and reattaches.

  • Flow visualization study to qualitatively define the flow field over a stealth UCAV(Uninhabited Combat Air Vehicle) configuration in a water tunnel has been conducted to clarify the basic aerodynamic performance. The test was performed at freestream velocity of 12.7 cm/sec which was corresponding to a Reynolds number of $1.4{\times}10^4$ based on mean aerodynamic chord. The development and breakdown of vortices illuminated by using dye were compared to the previous force and moment data. It was shown that the effect of the vortices generated by the main-body and junction are dominant in the low angle-of-attack region. However, in the high angle-of-attack region, the vortex generated by the fore-body mainly influenced the aerodynamic performance of the model.

  • The aerodynamic coefficients of Apollo capsule are calculated using a DSMC solver, SMILE, and the results agree very well with the data predicted by NASA. The aerodynamic characteristics of an orbital block which operates at high altitudes in the free molecule regime are also predicted. For the nominal flow conditions, the predicted aerodynamic force is very small since the dynamic pressure is extremely low. And the additional aerodynamic coefficients for the analysis of the attitude control are presented as the angle of attack and the side slip angle vary from $+45^{\circ}\;to\;-45^{\circ}$ of the nominal angle.

  • In this study, transonic flutter response characteristics have been studied for the AGARD 445.6 wing considering various turbulent models and several angle of attacks. The developed fluid-structure coupled analysis system is applied for flutter computations combining computational structural dynamics(CSD), finite element method(FEM) and computational fluid dynamics(CFD) in the time domain. The flutter boundaries of AGARD 445.6 wing are verified using developed computational system. For the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics in high transonic flow region, DES turbulent model using the structured grid system have been applied for the wing model. Characteristics of flutter responses have been investigated for various angle of attack conditions. Also, it is typically shown that the current computation approach can yield realistic and practical results for aircraft design and test engineers.

  • Wind tunnel tests were conducted on a model of deck section from the Ting Kau cable stayed bridge. The purpose of the tests was to determine the set of aerodynamic derivatives conventionally used to describe the motion-induced forces arising from the wind flow, and to investigate the stability of the deck under different conditions of turbulence and angle of attack. The study shows that except for large negative angles of attack the deck section itself is stable up to a high wind speed, and that when instability does occur it is essentially a single degree of freedom (torsional) flutter.

  • With the development of economy and construction technology, more and more bridges are built in complex mountainous areas. Accurate assessment of wind parameters is important in bridge construction at complex terrain. In order to investigate the wind characteristics in the high-altitude difference area, a complex mountain terrain model with the scale of 1:2000 was built. By using the method of wind tunnel tests, the study of wind characteristics including mean wind characteristics and turbulence characteristics was carried out. The results show: The wind direction is affected significant by the topography, the dominant wind direction is usually parallel to the river. Due to the sheltering effect of the mountain near the bridge, the wind speed and wind attack angle along the bridge are both uneven which is different from that at flat terrain. In addition, different from flat terrain, the wind attack angle is mostly negative. The wind profiles obey exponential law and logarithmic law. And the fitting coefficient is consistent with the code which means that it is feasible to use the method of wind tunnel test to simulate complex terrain. As for turbulence characteristics, the turbulence intensity is also related to the topography. Increases sheltering effect of mountain increases the degree of breaking up the large-scale vortices, thereby increasing the turbulence intensity. Also, the value of turbulence intensity ratio is different from the recommended values in the code. The conclusions of this study can provide basis for further wind resistance design of the bridge.

  • Characteristics of the conical vortices on the roof corner of a rectangular prism have been investigated by using a PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and the height of the model was 5.3$\times$10$^3$. The mean, instantaneous velocity vector fields, vorticity fields, and turbulent kinetic energy distribution were measured for two different angles of attack, 30$^{\circ}$and 45$^{\circ}$. The PIV measurements clearly observed not only the conical main vortex and the secondary vortex but also the tertiary vortex which is firstly reported in this paper. Asymmetric formation of the corner vortex for the case of 30$^{\circ}$angle of attack produces relatively the high magnitude of vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy around the bigger vortex which generates the peak suction pressure on the roof. Fairly symmetric features of the roof vortex are observed in the case of 45$^{\circ}$angle of attack, however, the dynamic characteristics are proved to be asymmetric due to the rectangular shape of the roof.
