  • Unstructured peer-to-peer systems are most commonly used in today's internet. But file placement is random in these systems and no correlation exists between peers and their contents. There is no guarantee that flooding queries will find the desired data. In this paper, we propose to cluster nodes in unstructured P2P systems using the agglomerative hierarchical clustering algorithm to improve the search method. We compared the delay time of clustering the nodes between our proposed algorithm and the k-means clustering algorithm. We also simulated the delay time of locating data in a network topology and recorded the overhead of the system using our proposed algorithm, k-means clustering, and without clustering. Simulation results show that the delay time of our proposed algorithm is shorter compared to other methods and resource overhead is also reduced.

  • The rapid growth of smart phones has made location-based services (LBSs) widely available. However, the use of LBS can raise privacy issues, as LBS can allow adversaries to violate the location privacy of users. There has been a considerable amount of research on preserving user location privacy. Most of these studies try to preserve location privacy by achieving what is known as location K-anonymity. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical clustering-based spatial cloaking algorithm for LBSs. The proposed algorithm constructs a tree using a modified version of agglomerative hierarchical clustering. The experimental results show, in terms of the ASR size, that the proposed algorithm is better than Hilbert Cloak and comparable to RC-AR (R-tree Cloak implementation of Reciprocal with an Asymmetric R-tree split). In terms of the ASR generation time, the proposed algorithm is much better in its performance than RC-AR and similar in performance to Hilbert Cloak.

  • This paper proposes a lyric search method to consider the characteristics of the user query. According to the fact that queries for the lyric search are derived from highlight parts of the music, this paper uses the hierarchical agglomerative clustering to find the highlight and proposes a Gaussian weighting to consider the neighbor of the highlight as well as highlight. By setting the mean of a Gaussian weighting at the highlight, this weighting function has higher weights near the highlight and the lower weights far from the highlight. Then, this paper constructs a index of lyrics with the gaussian weighting. According to the experimental results on a data set obtained from 5 real users, the proposed method is proved to be effective.

  • Recently there are many bibliometric studies attempting to utilize Pathfinder networks(PFNets) for examining and analyzing the intellectual structure of a scholarly field. Pathfinder network scaling has many advantages over traditional multidimensional scaling, including its ability to represent local details as well as global intellectual structure. However there are some limitations in PFNets including very high time complexity. And Pathfinder network scaling cannot be combined with cluster analysis, which has been combined well with traditional multidimensional scaling method. In this paper, a new method named as Parallel Nearest Neighbor Clustering (PNNC) are proposed for complementing those weak points of PFNets. Comparing the clustering performance with traditional hierarchical agglomerative clustering methods shows that PNNC is not only a complement to PFNets but also a fast and powerful clustering method for organizing informations.

  • To Know customers is very important for the company to survive in its cut-throat competition among coimpetitors. Companies need to manage the relationship with each ana every customer, ant make each of customers as profitable as possible. CRM (Customer relationship management) has emerged as a key solution for managing the profitable relationship. In order to achieve successful CRM customer segmentation is a essential component. Clustering as a data mining technique is very useful to build data-driven segmentation. This paper is concerned with building proper customer segmentation with introducing a credit card company case. Customer segmentation was built based only on transaction data which cattle from customer's activities. Two-step clustering approach which consists of k-means clustering and agglomerative clustering was applied for building a customer segmentation.

  • Active learning aims to improve the performance of a classification model by repeating the process to select the most helpful unlabeled data and include it to the training set through labelling by expert. In this paper, we propose a method for active learning based on hierarchical agglomerative clustering using Ward's linkage. The proposed method is able to construct a training set actively so as to include at least one sample from each cluster and also to reflect the total data distribution by expanding the existing training set. While most of existing active learning methods assume that an initial training set is given, the proposed method is applicable in both cases when an initial training data is given or not given. Experimental results show the superiority of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we have presented a Sequential Agglomerative Hierarchical Nested (SAHN) algorithm-based data clustering method in fuzzy inference system to achieve optimal performance of fuzzy model. SAHN-based algorithm is used to give possible range of number of clusters with cluster centers for the system identification. The axes of membership functions of this fuzzy model are optimized by using cluster centers obtained from clustering method and the consequence parameters of the fuzzy model are identified by standard least square method. Finally, in this paper, we have observed our model's output performance using the Box and Jenkins's gas furnace data and Sugeno's non-linear process data.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to analyze M:N corresponding relations in semantic matching, especially focusing on feature class matching. Similarities between any class pairs are measured by spatial objects which coexist in the class pairs, and corresponding classes are obtained by clustering with these pairwise similarities. We applied a graph embedding method, which constructs a global configuration of each class in a low-dimensional Euclidean space while preserving the above pairwise similarities, so that the distances between the embedded classes are proportional to the overall degree of similarity on the edge paths in the graph. Thus, the clustering problem could be solved by employing a general clustering algorithm with the embedded coordinates. We applied the proposed method to polygon object layers in a topographic map and land parcel categories in a cadastral map of Suwon area and evaluated the results. F-measures of the detected class pairs were analyzed to validate the results. And some class pairs which would not detected by analysis on nominal class names were detected by the proposed method.

  • Plagiarism is a serious problem in school education due to current technologies such as the internet and word processors. This paper presents how to detect source code plagiarism using similarity based on string comparison methods. The main contribution is to use hierarchical agglomerative clustering technique to classify plagiarism groups, which are then visualized as a dendrogram. Graders can set an empirical threshold to the dendrogram to navigate plagiarism groups. We evaluated the performance of the presented method with a real world data. The result showed the usefulness and applicability of this method.

  • Clustering is a process of grouping similar or relevant documents into a cluster and assigning a meaningful concept to the cluster. By this process, clustering facilitates fast and correct search for the relevant documents by narrowing down the range of searching only to the collection of documents belonging to related clusters. For effective clustering, techniques are required for identifying similar documents and grouping them into a cluster, and discovering a concept that is most relevant to the cluster. One of the problems often appearing in this context is the detection of a complex concept that overlaps with several simple concepts at the same hierarchical level. Previous clustering methods were unable to identify and represent a complex concept that belongs to several different clusters at the same level in the concept hierarchy, and also could not validate the semantic hierarchical relationship between a complex concept and each of simple concepts. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes a new clustering method that identifies and represents complex concepts efficiently. We developed the Hierarchical Overlapping Clustering (HOC) algorithm that modified the traditional Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering algorithm to allow overlapped clusters at the same level in the concept hierarchy. The HOC algorithm represents the clustering result not by a tree but by a lattice to detect complex concepts. We developed a system that employs the HOC algorithm to carry out the goal of complex concept detection. This system operates in three phases; 1) the preprocessing of documents, 2) the clustering using the HOC algorithm, and 3) the validation of semantic hierarchical relationships among the concepts in the lattice obtained as a result of clustering. The preprocessing phase represents the documents as x-y coordinate values in a 2-dimensional space by considering the weights of terms appearing in the documents. First, it goes through some refinement process by applying stopwords removal and stemming to extract index terms. Then, each index term is assigned a TF-IDF weight value and the x-y coordinate value for each document is determined by combining the TF-IDF values of the terms in it. The clustering phase uses the HOC algorithm in which the similarity between the documents is calculated by applying the Euclidean distance method. Initially, a cluster is generated for each document by grouping those documents that are closest to it. Then, the distance between any two clusters is measured, grouping the closest clusters as a new cluster. This process is repeated until the root cluster is generated. In the validation phase, the feature selection method is applied to validate the appropriateness of the cluster concepts built by the HOC algorithm to see if they have meaningful hierarchical relationships. Feature selection is a method of extracting key features from a document by identifying and assigning weight values to important and representative terms in the document. In order to correctly select key features, a method is needed to determine how each term contributes to the class of the document. Among several methods achieving this goal, this paper adopted the $x^2$ statistics, which measures the dependency degree of a term t to a class c, and represents the relationship between t and c by a numerical value. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the HOC algorithm, a series of performance evaluation is carried out by using a well-known Reuter-21578 news collection. The result of performance evaluation showed that the HOC algorithm greatly contributes to detecting and producing complex concepts by generating the concept hierarchy in a lattice structure.
