  • There are technological, operational and environmental constraints at tactical edge, which are disconnected operation, intermittent connectivity, and limited bandwidth (DIL), size, weight and power (SWaP) limitations, ad-hoc and mobile network, and so on. To overcome these limitations and constraints, we use service-oriented architecture (SOA) based technologies. In our research, we propose a hierarchical mission service model that supports service-oriented mission planning and execution in order for a commander to operate various SW required for mission in battlefield environment. We will also implement development tools that utilize the workflow technology and semantic capability-based recommendation and apply them to combat mission scenarios to demonstrate effectiveness.

  • This paper presents an effective pattern classification model by designing an artificial neural network based pattern classifiers for face recognition. First, a RGB image inputted from a frame grabber is converted into a HSV image which is similar to the human beings' vision system. Then, the coarse facial region is extracted using the hue(H) and saturation(S) components except intensity(V) component which is sensitive to the environmental illumination. Next, the fine facial region extraction process is performed by matching with the edge and gray based templates. To make a light-invariant and qualified facial image, histogram equalization and intensity compensation processing using illumination plane are performed. The finally extracted and enhanced facial images are used for training the pattern classification models. The proposed H-ART2 model which has the hierarchical ART2 layers and F-LVQ model which is optimized by fuzzy membership make it possible to classify facial patterns by optimizing relations of clusters and searching clustered reference patterns effectively. Experimental results show that the proposed face recognition system is as good as the SVM model which is famous for face recognition field in recognition rate and even better in classification speed. Moreover high recognition rate could be acquired by combining the proposed neural classification models.

  • Recent advances in wireless networks and low-cost, low-power design have led to active research in large-scale networks of small, wireless, low power sensors and actuators, In large-scale networks, lots of timing-synchronization protocols already exist (such as NTP, GPS), In ad-hoc networks, especially wireless sensor networks, it is hard to synchronize all nodes in networks because it has no infrastructure. In addition, sensor nodes have low-power CPU (it cannot perform the complex computation), low batteries, and even they have to have active and inactive section by periods. Therefore, new approach to time synchronization is needed for wireless sensor networks, In this paper, I propose Energy-Efficient Time Synchronization (EETS) protocol providing network-wide time synchronization in wireless sensor networks, The algorithm is organized two phase, In first phase, I make a hierarchical tree with sensor nodes by broadcasting "Level Discovery" packet. In second phase, I synchronize them by exchanging time stamp packets, And I also consider send time, access time and propagation time. I have shown the performance of EETS comparing Timing-sync Protocol for Sensor Networks (TPSN) and Reference Broadcast Synchronization (RBS) about energy efficiency and time synchronization accuracy using NESLsim.

  • In this paepr, the modified neocognitron, which has capability of recognizing multi-patterns in input image in one pass, is proposed. It is the hierarchical neural network composed of S and V layer which are able to extract features and of C layer with little effect from deformation, changes in size, shifts in position. S and V cells extract the features of all patterns in input image by applying DCC(don't care condition) to those cells. S and C cells also have position informations of extracted patterns. Position information is used in extracting good features without extracted features beting interfered one another. The proposed method is shorter in recognition time than the selective attention method with backward connection, because of recognizing multi-patterns in one passe. The modified neocognitron can recognizze attached multi-patterns because of using DCC and position informations.

  • Multiple stellar systems composed of triple, double+double or double+triple, etc. are very rare and interesting objects for understanding the star formation and dynamical evolution. However, only six systems have been found to be a doubly eclipsing quadruple, which consists of two eclipsing binaries, and four systems to be a triply eclipsing hierarchical triple. Recently, the 15 doubly eclipsing multiple candidates located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) have been reported by the OGLE project. In order to examine whether these candidates are real multiple systems with eclipsing features, we performed a high-cadence time-series photometry for the LMC using the KMTNet (Korea Microlensing Telescope Network) 1.6 m telescopes in three site (CTIO, SAAO, and SSO) during 2016-2017. The KMTNet data will help reveal the photometric properties of the multiple-star candidates. In this paper, we present the VI light curves and their preliminarily analyses for 12 of the 15 eclipsing systems in the LMC, based on our KMTNet observations and the OGLE-III survey data from 2001-2009.

  • A flexibility-based distributed computing strategy (DCS) for structural health monitoring (SHM) has recently been proposed which is suitable for implementation on a network of densely distributed smart sensors. This approach uses a hierarchical strategy in which adjacent smart sensors are grouped together to form sensor communities. A flexibility-based damage detection method is employed to evaluate the condition of the local elements within the communities by utilizing only locally measured information. The damage detection results in these communities are then communicated with the surrounding communities and sent back to a central station. Structural health monitoring can be done without relying on central data acquisition and processing. The main purpose of this paper is to experimentally verify this flexibility-based DCS approach using wired sensors; such verification is essential prior to implementation on a smart sensor platform. The damage locating vector method that forms foundation of the DCS approach is briefly reviewed, followed by an overview of the DCS approach. This flexibility-based approach is then experimentally verified employing a 5.6 m long three-dimensional truss structure. To simulate damage in the structure, the original truss members are replaced by ones with a reduced cross section. Both single and multiple damage scenarios are studied. Experimental results show that the DCS approach can successfully detect the damage at local elements using only locally measured information.

  • Purpose - This paper aims to obtain a theoretical understanding for the relationship among the elderly's leisure activity, social support, life satisfaction and mental loneliness in their life. This paper has the purpose to draw policy implications by the course of research and study as well as to find alternatives in enhancing the elderly's psychological well-being in a practical dimension. Research design, data, and methodology - Data has been collected from 380 elderly persons participating in leisure activities in 10 senior welfare service centers located in the Seoul area. A structured questionnaire sheet was used, and as the main analysis method for hypothesis verification, the hierarchical regression method was used. Results - Social support is moderating factor for the relationships among the productive leisure activity, life satisfaction and mental loneliness, but does not play the moderating role in the relationships such as consumptive leisure activity, life satisfaction and mental loneliness. Conclusions - It is necessary to make efforts to provide policies for promoting and expanding the elderly's participation especially in productive leisure activity. And also, an institutional support should be provided for maintaining and expanding a stable social relationship network for the elderly's participation.

  • Scalable video streaming over wireless networks has many challenges. The most significant challenge is related to packet loss. To overcome this problem, in this paper, we propose an unequal loss protection (ULP) method using a new forward error correction (FEC) mechanism for robust scalable video streaming over wireless networks. For an efficient FEC assignment considering video quality, we first introduce a simple and efficient performance metric, the layer-based recovery rate (LRR), for quantifying the unequal error propagation effects of the temporal and quality layers on the basis of packet losses. LRR is based on the unequal importance in both the temporal and the quality layers of a hierarchical scalable video coding structure. Then, the proposed ULP-LRR method assigns an appropriate number of FEC packets on the basis of the LRR to protect the video layers against packet lossy network environments. Compared with conventional ULP algorithms, the proposed ULP-LRR algorithm demonstrates a higher performance for various error-prone wireless channel statuses.

  • Multivariate statistical approaches to classify sampling sites with measuring their similarity by water quality data and understand the characteristics of classified clusters have been discussed for the optimal water quality monitering network. For empirical study, data of two years (2005, 2006) at the 9 sampling sites with the combination of 2 depth levels and 7 important variables related to water quality is collected in Yongdam reservoir. The similarity among sampling sites is measured with Euclidean distances of water quality related variables and they are classified by hierarchical clustering method. The clustered sites are discussed with principal component variables in the view of the geographical characteristics of them and reducing the number of measuring sites. Nine sampling sites are clustered as follows; One cluster of 5, 6, and 7 sampling sites shows the characteristic of low water depth and main stream of water. The sites of 2 and 4 are clustered into the same group by characteristics of hydraulics which come from that of main stream. But their changing pattern of water quality looks like different since the site of 2 is near to dam. The sampling sites of 3, 8, and 9 are individually positioned due to the different tributary.
