  • Age and growth of the mudskipper, Scartelaos gigas were investigated using the second actinost bone of the pectoral girdle, based on an analysis of 560 individuals collected from the mud flats in south west Korea. Specimens were collected semimonthly from March to September of 2003. Actinost and ring radii of each ring group showed a direct one-to-one relationship, with ring radius increasing in tandem with actinost radius. Monthly change in the marginal indices showed that ring formation occurred between May and July(mainly June), being supported by the monthly change in the gonadosomatic(highest in June) and hepatosomatic(lowest in July) indices. Because the species has not been found since November, when air temperature was less than about $10^{\circ}C$, it is thought to enter to hibernation. Therefore, it was suggested that the two new actinost rings may appear a year: one during the spawning season(May-July) and another during hibernation(since November). Although the growth of S. gigas must be limited to short periods each year from March to April and from August to October, its growth rate was considerably fast. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters of S. gigas were $TL_{\infty}$=179.36 mm, K=0.78 $year^{-1}$, $t_0$=-0.7762, and age-length key were $TL_1$=134.3 mm, $TL_2$=158.6 mm, $TL_3$=169.1 mm, $TL_4$=175.0 mm.

  • We report for the first time the life history of a 'social' spider, Philoponella prominens, living in a temperate region. Philoponella prominens hibernated as immatures or subadults for 7-8 months in 1995 and 1996 from September-October to April-May in central Korea. When they emerged from their winter hibernation, a majority began their lives as commensals in the webs of other species. As the mating season approached, however, commensal spiders switched to become colonial or solitary. The mating season began in early June and lasted until early August. Newly-hatched spiderlings began to appear in the field in late June. They formed a colony by building their webs connected to the mother's by using pan of the mother's web as supporting substrates. As the season progressed, however, some of the colonial spiderlings became commensal or solitary individuals. Our field observations suggest that Philoponella prominens form colonies or commensal associations to reduce the web-building cost.

  • The present study was designed in order to clarify ultrastructural characteristies of the spermatogenetic process and to examine survival state of the spermatozoa introduced into the female reproductive tract after autumnal coitus in the Korean greater horseshoe bats(Rhinolophus ferrumeguinum korai). The general morphological characteristics of spermatogenesis were principally similar to those of the other mammalian species; acrosomal formation, flagellar formation, middle piece formation and concentration of the spermatozoan nucleus. The spermatozoa introduced into the vagina were found to be dead forming a vaginal plug, the opaque central core of which consisted of trapped dead spermatozoa. Some spermatozoa introduced into the uterus were observed to be phagocytized by the polymorphonuclear leucocytes infiltrated into the uterine glandular lumen. The oviductal epithelium, consisted of ciliated and secretory cells; the luminal surface of secretory cells were covered by a number of microvilli with well developed glycocalyx, suggesting a close relationship to nutrient (e.g. glycogen) supply for the spermatozoa during hibernation.

  • The growth of young-of-the-year blue spot mudskipper, Boleophthalmus pectinirostris, was investigated using length-frequency data for 395 individuals collected from a mud flat in southwestern Korea between August and October 2001. Three cohorts were separated by the Bhattacharya method. In October, individuals of cohort-I reached 98 mm in total length, whereas those of cohort-III reached just 66 mm. Each cohort reached hibernation in November, that could be related to the ring formation in the following year.

  • The characteristics of the testis and the annual cycle of the seminiferous epithelium of the Miniopterus schreibersi fuliginosus were examined by optical microscopy. The testis weight and diameter of the seminiferous tubules were increased gradually from May to July, and the highest activity was observed in August. The size then decreased rapidly from October. Spermatogenesis began in May, peaked in August, and was suspended from October to April in the following year. Spermatocytogenesis were produced from May to July. Spermiogenesis occurred from August to September. In particular, immature spematogenic cells in the seminiferous tubules were engulfed by the phagocytosis of Sertoli cells in October. From November to April, the seminiferous tubuly contained only Sertoli cells and Ad spermatogonia. Therefore, the periodic changes in the seminiferous epithelium of M. S. fuliginosus suggest that a long hibernation is an adaptive strategy for the preservation of energy and the regulation of the breeding cycle.

  • A field study of Lymnaea viridis, the intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica, was carried out in the eastern Chonnam area. The snail was distributed all over the place. Their major habitats were rice paddies (60.8%), followed by brooks (23.2%), irrigation canals (8.6%), and drains (5.6%). Other minor habitats included natural ponds (1.5%), lakes (0.4%), and rivers (0.1%). L. viridis was living in wet clay soil, occasionally entering water. The snails discharged egg masses when the temperature was $15{\sim}20^{\circ}C$, and the number of the snails was the highest late in October. At $9^{\circ}C$ the snails were not found on the mud: they were present deep in water or at the base of rice stubbles. These hibernation sites were discussed with the epidemiology of fascioliasis.

  • This study is to estimate abundance of the Chesapeake Bay blue crab stock. Using 823 dredge tows which were conducted during the 1991 winter survey, blue crab abundance was estimated on the basis of newly developed methods which account for unequal dredge tow distances, size- and sex-specific heterogeneous overwintering spatial distributions, wintertime exploitation, the time period of quasi-hibernation, and dredge capture efficiency. The estimate of total abundance before correction by gear efficiency was 131.8 million crabs $(95\%\;C.I.\;=\;118.2\;million\;crabs\;to\;145.4\;million\;crabs),$ Dredge capture efficiency was estimated to be 0.474. Thus, the estimate of total abundance was calculated as 278.1 million crabs after correction by the efficiency factor.

  • The cyclic changes of the epithelium of seminiferous tubule in the Korean greater horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum korai) were investigated by means of the light and electron microscopic observations and the following results were obtained. 1) The spermatogenic function of the horseshoe bats captured in September was moderate but considerable amount of the ultrastructural findings were obtained in both the spermatocytogenic and the spermiogenic phases. 2) The spermatogenic function of the horseshoe bats captured in December was depressed representing a resting status. 3) The light and electron microscopic findings suggest that the epithelium of seminiferous tubule varies cyclically, which is closely related to their peculiar way of reproductive habit during hibernation.

  • Seasonal variations of GnRH were investigated by immunohlstochemicsl technique in three species of frog, Rona niEromaculutu, R. dvbowskii 8nd R. mgosa with different ovulation period in order to examine the relationship between GnRH expression and reproductive function. In all three species of frog, the intensity of GnRH immunoreactivitv and the number of GnRH neurons in the brawn were relatively high in frogs at the pre-ovulation period and markedly increased at the ovulation period. Those were then decreased after ovulation and further lowered during early hibernation period. These results indicate that GnRH experssion is closely related to specific phases of annual reproductive cycle in frog.

  • In this paper, we propose a low-power hibernation technique (LHT) for WUSB over IEEE 802.15.6 hierarchical MAC to improve its energy efficiency. Simulation results show that the LHT also integrate WUSB transactions and WBAN traffic efficiently while it achieves high energy efficiency.
