A solid state Hg(Au)/HgO reference electrode was prepared utilizing gold amalgam solid particles. Solid fine powder of the gold amalgam was prepared by chemical reduction of Au(III) with NaBH4 followed by reduction of Hg(II) in the presence of gold fine particles. The solid content in the suspension of the gold amalgam particles and fine mercury oxide particles in DMF containing PVC was precipitated by the addition of a large amount of water to give solid Hg(Au)/HgO/PVC mixture. After drying, the mixture was pressure-molded to a physically stable Hg(Au)/HgO composite reference electrode material. The electrochemical characteristics of the electrode as a reference electrode were very similar to an ordinary Hg/HgO reference electrode. The electrode material can be molded and fabricated in any desired shape and size. The surface can be renewed by a simple polishing process whenever contaminated or deactivated. The applicability of the electrode in the electrochemical detection of carbohydrates after anion exchange separation was evaluated.

We propose a novel nanomaterial-based pn diode which constructed with an n-type ZnO nanowire (NW) and a p-type HgTe nanoparticle (NP) thin film. The photo current characteristics of a ZnO NW, a HgTe NP thin film and pn diode constructed with a ZnO NW and a HgTe NP thin film were investigated under illumination of the 325 nm and 633 nm wavelength light. The conductivities of a ZnO NW exposed to the 325 nm and 633 nm wavelength light increased, while the photocurrents taken from the HgTe NP thin film was very close to the dark currents. Moreover, The pn diode exhibited the rectifying characteristics of the dark current and of the photocurrent excited by the 633 nm wavelength light. In contrast, the ohmic characteristics for the photocurrent were observed due to the junction barrier lowering in the conduction band of the ZnO nanowire under the illumination of the 325 nm wavelength light.
Blood gas values such as pO$_2$ were studied in common marmosets, crab-eating macaques and Japanese macaques, rhesus macaques and celebes macaque reared in Korea. Blood pH and blood gas values were evaluated in both arterial and venous blood. pH, p$CO_2$, and pO$_2$, of arterial blood in common marmosets were measured as 7.4$\pm$0.1, 29.2$\pm$3.6 mmHg and 81.5$\pm$8.9 mmHg, respectively. Corresponding values in one crab-eating macaque were 7.3, 41.3 mmHg and 46.5 mmHg, respectively. In case of venous blood, pH, p$CO_2$, and pO$_2$, in common marmosets were observed as 7.2$\pm$0.2, 64.9$\pm$18.3 mmHg and 23.5$\pm$5.4 mmHg, respectively. On the while, pH, p$CO_2$, and pO$_2$, of venous blood in crab-eating macaques showed 7.2$\pm$0.2, 49.9$\pm$8.0 mmHg and 38.3$\pm$8.8 mmHg, respectively. Venous pH, p$CO_2$, and pO$_2$, in Japanese macaques were 7.1$\pm$0.2, 56.4$\pm$5.3 mmHg and 40.1$\pm$9.3 mmHg, respectively. Those values in one rhesus macaque were 7.2, 61.1 mmHg and 24.9 mmHg, and in celebes macaque were 7.1, 54.3 mmHg and 31.8 mmHg, respectively.

Fabrication of c-axis oriented $(Hg_{0.75}Rc_{0.25})Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_y$ thick fabricated has been attempted using Ni substrates with the buffer layer of Cr or NiO. Coexistence of $(Hg_{0.75}Rc_{0.25})Ba_2Ca_3Cu_4O_y$ pellets wad found to stabilize $(Hg_{0.75}Rc_{0.25})Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_y$ phase of the tape. The c-axis oriented tapes were reproducibly obtained on the NiO/Ni substerate and they recorded high $B_{irr}$ at 77K.$(Hg_{0.75}Rc_{0.25})Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_y$ 1223.
A method of selective determination of inorganic and organic mercury compounds has been described. The $CHCl_3$ solution of a high molecular quaternary alkylammonium salt, Aliquat 336 was used for the simultaneous preconcentration of both inorganic, $Hg^{2+}$ as its thiocyanate complex, and organic mercury compounds, $CH_3HgCl$ and $C_2H_3O_2$$HgC_6H_5$ by extraction from their aqueous solution. Selective separation of the inorganic mercury from the extract was followed by stripping with 3 M $HClO_4 $ solution for the subsequent determination by CVAAS. Organic mercury was also determined by CVAAS after removal of $CHCl_3solvent$ from the extract and decomposition of the residue with 4% $KMnO_4 $-1 MH_2$S0_4$. The mixtures of inorganic and organic mercury compounds contained 1.0 $\mug$ as Hg in 50 mL of sample solution(0.02 ${\mu}gHg/mL$) were analysed within ${\pm}6%$ by absolute errors.

In this study, nano-scaled shielding materials were assembled and fabricated by doping different weight percentages of Nano-mercuric oxide (N-HgO) into Nano-Bentonite (N-Bent) based on using (100-x% N-Bent + x% N-HgO, x = 10, 20, 30, and 40 wt %). The fabricated N-HgO/N-Bent nanocomposites were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, and SEM and evaluated to evaluate their shielding properties toward gamma radiation by using four different γ-ray energies form three point sources; 356 keV from 133Ba, 662 keV from 137Cs as well as 1173, and 1332 keV from 60Co. The γ-rays mass attenuation coefficients were plotted as a function of the doped N-HgO concentrations into N-HgO/N-Bent nanocomposites. The computed values of mass attenuation coefficients (µm), effective atomic number (Zeff) and electron density (Nel) by the as-prepared samples were found to increase, while the half value layer (HVL) and mean free path (MFP) were identified to decrease upon increasing the N-HgO contents. It was concluded also that the increase in N-HgO concentration led to a direct increase in the mass attenuation coefficient from 0.10 to 0.17 cm2/g at 356 keV and from 0.08 to 0.09 cm2/g at 662 keV. However, a slight increase was observed in the identified mass attenuation coefficients at (1172 and 1332 keV).

In this work, recent progress on graphene/metal oxide composites as advanced materials for $HgCl_2$ and $CO_2$ capture was investigated. Density Functional Theory calculations were used to understand the effects of temperature on the adsorption ability of $HgCl_2$ and water vapor on $CO_2$ adsorption on CaO (001) with reinforced carbon-based nanostructures using B3LYP functional. Understanding the mechanism by which mercury and $CO_2$ adsorb on graphene/CaO (g-CaO) is crucial to the design and fabrication of effective capture technologies. The results obtained from the optimized geometries and frequencies of the proposed cluster site structures predicted that with respect to molecular binding the system possesses unusually large $HgCl_2$ ($0.1-0.4HgCl_2g/g$ sorbent) and $CO_2$ ($0.2-0.6CO_2g/g$ sorbent) uptake capacities. The $HgCl_2$ and $CO_2$ were found to be stable on the surface as a result of the topology and a strong interaction with the g-CaO system; these results strongly suggest the potential of CaO-doped carbon materials for $HgCl_2$ and $CO_2$ capture applications, the functional gives reliable answers compared to available experimental data.
Background : Prone position improves oxygenation in some patients with ARDS. According to some authors, prone position can also improve the deteriorated hemodynamics induced by PEEP. But these respiratory and hemodynamic effects of prone position has not yet been fully established. Methods : Twentythree consequtive patients with ARDS(M : F= 11 : 12, $62.1{\pm}20.8yrs$) were the subjects for this study. ABGA, static compliance of the respiratory system, mean arterial pressure and pulse rate were obtained in supine position and at 5min, 0.5h and 2h of prone position. Positive respiratory response was defined as 20mmHg or more increase in $PaO_2/FIO_2$ within 2h of prone position. Early of late respiratory responses were defined if the positive response was observed within of after 3 day of ARDS onset, respectively. Positive hemodynamic response was defined as 10mmHg or more increase in mean arterial pressure at 5min of prone position. Results : Fifteen patients (65%) showed positive respiratory response. In the respiratory responders, $PaO_2$ was $69.8{\pm}17.6mmHg$ in supine position, $83.2{\pm}22.6mmHg$ in prone position 0.5h, $96.8{\pm}22.7mmHg$ in prone position 2h(p<0.001), and $PaO_2/FIO_2$ was $108{\pm}41mmHg$, $137{\pm}57mmHg$, $158{\pm}50mmHg$, respectively(p=0.001). Age, sex, cause of ARDS, supine $PaO_2$ and $PaO_2/FIO_2$ were not different between the respiratory responders and the nonresponders. The respiratory responders, however, showed higher mean arterial pressure than the nonresponders($91.1{\pm}13.1mmHg$ vs. $76.0{\pm}18.7mmHg$, p=0.035), and tendency of higher survival rate(9/15 vs. 2/8, p=0.074). Static compliance of the respiratory system was decreased in prone position 0.5h($28.4{\pm}7.9ml/cm$$H_2O$ vs. $23.8{\pm}7.6ml/cm$$H_2O$, p=0.007). The overall rate of early response(n=23) and late response(n=11) were similar(14/23 vs. 7/11, p>0.05). But patient without early response showed late response only in 25%(1/4), while patient with early response showed late response in 85.7%(6/7)(p=0.072). Five patients(22%) showed positive hemodynamic response, two of them being respiratory nonresponders. There were no differences in the baseline mean arterial pressure or the level of PEEP applied in supine between the hemodynamic responders and the hemodynamic nonresponders. Conclusions : Prone position either improved oxygenation or increased arterial pressure in significant proportion of patients with ARDS. And the respiratory response to prone position was thought to be determined in the early stage of ARDS.
The three analysis methods, EPA method 3050, the method offered by Ministry of Environment in Korea, and modified method corrected in this laboratory, were studied to investigate the effect of matrix on the analysis of inorganic priority pollutants. 7 inorganic priority pollutants(Ni, Cr, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Hg) were spiked to the plating, leather, paper, electric, and dye sludges. Mean recovery of the elements except Hg was 95.5% when the procedure of EPA method was applied. However, recovery by the two other extraction methods showed 11.1% and 27.7%, respectively. Digestions were done by MDS (microwave digestion system) and $HNO_3+HClO_4$ methods. To study organic and inorganic matrix effect, samples were made by adding triethanol amine as a organic matrix and $FeCl_3{\cdot}6H_2O$+$AlCl_3{\cdot}6H_2O$ as a inorganic matrix, respectively. The extracts were analyzed by AAS and HG-AAS. Mean recovery of the elements by the $HNO_3+HClO_4$ procedure, except Hg, gave better result than that of the MDS method. Mean recovery of elements was decreased when organic and inorganic matrices were added in the sludge samples. The procedure of MDS and $HNO_3+HClO_4$ digestion gave higher recoveries than that of direct analysis. In general, the results of the studies showed a significant matrix effect on the inorganic priority pollutants analysis in sludges.

A series of superconducting Hg$Ba_{2}$Cu$O_{4+7}$ materials, containing $Ag_{x}$ additions with molar fraction x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5, have been studied. This study has showed that Ag additions lead to changes in superconducting properties of Hg-1201 materials. In addition, according to the amount of $Ag_{x}$ additions with molar fraction x up to 0.5, both $T_{c}$ and $J_{c}$ of Hg-1201 materials generally decrease with Ag-content. These and other results are discussed in this paper.
