A capitellid species, Heteromastus filiformis ($Clapar\grave{e}de$, 1864) is newly reported from Korean waters with the description and illustrations. Korean materials of the present study show several characteristics generally agreed well with the previous descriptions of H. filiformis as follows: the thorax is composed of the first achaetigerous peristomium and following 11 thoracic chaetigers; the capillary chaetae are present on the thoracic chaetigers 1-5 and narrowly bilimbate; the thoracic hooded hooks are appeared on the chaetigers 6-11 and have indistinct nodes on the shaft and several teeth above the main fang; the abdominal hooded hooks possess distinct nodes on the shaft and a few teeth above the main fang; the branchiae appearing on the posterior abdominal segments are the broadly-based and rounded lamellae projecting posteriorly. The authors reviewed the taxonomy of Heteromastus with a comparison of morphological characteristics among worldwide species, and provided a key of them.
In order to study the community structure and distribution pattern of macrobenthos in the subtidal area of Shia Sea between Haenam peninsula and Shinan-Jindo area at southwest coast of Korea, duplicate sediment samples were taken seasonally by van Veen grab (surface area, $0.1m^2$) from 49 stations between November 2001 and August 2002. The surface sediment facies were muddy sandy gravel near Mokpo-Gu channel, gravel in the Myoungrang channel with high tidal currents, and sandy muddy in the southern Uido area. Ignition loss in the sediment ranged from 0.5 to 1.5% with a mean of 0.6%. A total of 271 taxa were collected with a mean density of $166ind.\;m^{-2}$ and a mean biomass of $29.2g\;m^{-2}$. Polychaetes were dominant faunal group in terms of species richness and abundance, accounting for 34% and 40% of total species number and abundance, respectively. Molluscs accounted for 44% of biomass. Bio-Env analysis revealed that sediment composition and ignition loss affected the spatial distribution of subtidal macrobenthic community in the study area. Major dominant species were Photis longicaudata, Septifer keenae, Maldane cristata, Lumbrineris longifolia, Heteromastus filiformis and Coptothyris grayi. Based on cluster analysis, four station groups were classified. They were associated with sediment types. Bivalve, Striarca symmetrica, polychaetes, Glycera chirori, Heteromastus filiformis and decapod Latreutes planirostris were major contributing fauna in station group A, B, C, and D, respectively. These results suggest that macrobenthic community of the Shia Sea is normally influenced by sediment type and related ignition loss.

Assessment of benthic quality status was implemented along the subtidal areas of Jindo and Jejudo to understand faunal structure of polychaete assemblages and ecological quality of the benthic environment. Sediment analysis was characterized by well sorted of both mud and sand in Jindo, and a little higher sand in Jejudo instead. A total of 68 polychaete species were found at 14 sampling stations with a mean density of 231 inds./m2, and 61 species, 167 inds./m2 and 62 species, 295 inds./m2 in Jindo areas and Jejudo areas. Dominant species found in Jindo areas were Heteromastus filiformis, Ampharete arctica, Prionospio sp., Sigambra tentaculata, Thelepus sp. and Amphicteis gunneri, Ampharete arctica, Prionospio sp., Spiochaetopterus costarum, Heteromastus filiformis in Jejudo. With a help of cluster analysis, it was found that the sampling stations showed distinctive pattern of the distribution pattern and benthic quality status in Jindo and Jejudo except sampling station numbers 5 and 6, respectively. AMBI analysis the results were 1.2-3.4, grade V benthic polychaetes did not appear. It was evident that both Jindo and Jejudo had different sedimentary characteristics as well as distribution pattern of polychaete assemblages.

The macrobenthic faunal community of Gwangyang Bay comprised 154 species and showed the overall mean density of 1,286 individuals/$m^2$. Polychaetes were the most important component of the macrofaunal community in species richness, abundance and biomass. The dominant species in abundance were poly-chaetes like Tharyx sp.(44.8%), Lumbrineris longifolia(14.0%), Heteromastus filiformis(3.6%), a mussel Mytilus edulis, and an amphipod crustacean Corophium sinense. The abundance and biomass in the western part of the bay were lower than in the channel regions and mouth of the bay. The community indices showed the same trend in the spatial distribution with the abundance and species richness. The study area can be divided into seven station groups; five station groups in the eastern part, two groups in the channel and open mouth part of the bay.
The present study was carried out to apprehend that the pollutants originating from Jinhae Industrial Complex affect benthic polychaetous community in the northern Jinhae bay. An investigation on the macrobenthic community in Jinhae bay was conducted in September, December of 2002 and March of 2003. The benthic fauna showed mean density of 2,151 ind. $m^{-2}$ in September of 2002, 2,427 ind. $m^{-2}$ in December of 2002 and 2,394 ind. $m^{-2}$ in March of 2003. Major faunal groups are polychaetes, crustaceans and mollusks, corresponding to $73.7\%,\;12.0\%\;and\;11.7\%,$ in total mean density during all of the sampling season, respectively. The most abundant species was Lumbrineris longifolia $(24.85\%),$ followed by Tharyx sp. $(21.70\%),$ Mesochaetopterus sp. $(6.20\%),$ Heteromastus filiformis $(5.39\%),$ Prionospio sp. $(5.18\%),$ Clycinde sp. $(4.29\%),$ etc. Tharyx sp. was the highest abundant species in September of 2002, and Lumbrineris longifolia was the dominant species in another sampling seasons. The density and the species number of polychaetes were high around Chori Is. and poor near Jinhae Industrial Complex area. Cluster analysis based on the species composition showed that Jinhae bay could be divided into three regions except in March of 2003. In December of 2002, there are very distinct regions by the cluster analysis. The density of benthic polychaetes in Jinhae bay was higher than that in the other coastal area of Korea, due to the predominance by some of opportunistic species, such as Lumbrineris longifolia, Tharyx sp. and Heteromastus filiformis, etc. It means that the study area were in the process of organic enrichment.
This study investigated the composition and the distribution of the benthic polychaeta community in the semi-enclosed Yoja Bay on the southern coast of Korea and was designed to deduce temporal changes in the community with the comparison of the previous studies. In YoJa Bay, benthic polychaetous community structure was investigated on the base of the samples from 87 stations. The surface sediment was mainly composed of fine-grained sediment, mixed clayey silt and silty clay. The total benthic macrofaunal density was $387 indiv./m^2$, and the density was higher in the middle bay, and in the mouth of bay than in the inner bay. scapharca subcrenata (Bivalvia) and amphipods (Crustacea) were important species in the inner and the middle of the bar, respectively. Benthic polychaetes were comprised of 72 species with a mean density of $149 indiv./m^2$. Their distributions showed higher densities in the mouth of bay than in the rest of bay. The dominant species over 1.0 percentages were composed of the 20 species, and they occupied $84.5\%$ of the total density. The most dominant species was Sternaspis scutata ($13.6\%$), fallowed fly Heteromastus filiformis ($9.8\%$), Polynoidae indet. ($8.3\%$), Sigambra tentacuzata ($7.1\%$) and others. The cluster analysis revealed that the study area was divided into three station groups. At the station group YI located in the inner bay, the most dominant species was Heteromastus filiformis . At the station group YII in the middle bay, the dominant species was Sternaspis scutata. And at the station group YIII in the mouth of bay, the dominant species was Paraiacydonia paradoxa. Whereas Sternaspis scutata and Mediomastus sp. were the dominant species in the past study, Heteromastus filiformis and Tharyx sp. appeared newly to be the dominant species, even if their low densities that in the past. These facts mean that Yoja Bay be maintained yet as little polluted area compared to other bays on the coast of Korea, but needed some caution of marine environmental management.

This study was carried out to investigate the composition and the distribution of the benthic polychaetous communities in Deugryang Bay, semi-enclosed bays, on the southern coast of Korea and to deduce temporal changes in community with the comparison of the past studies. In Deugryang Bay, benthic polychaetous community structure was investigated on the base of the samples from 98 stations in 1996 and 1997. The main facies of surface sediment was clayey silt. The overall benthic macrofaunal density was 871 ind./m$^{2}$. The density was highest in the middle part of the bay because Musculus senhousia (Bivalvia) and cumaceans (Crustacea) had their highest densities in some stations. Benthic polychaetes were comprised of 100 species with a mean density of 138 ind./m$^{2}$. Their abundances were higher in the inner bay, in the middle bay, and in the mouth of bay, but poor community structures were established in the whole bay. The dominant species over 1.0 percentage were composed of the total 21 species, and they occupied 78.3% of the total abundance of the benthic polychaetes. The most dominant species was Lumbrineris longifolia (9.3%), followed by Eteone longa (7.3%), Heteromastus filifomis (7.1%), Sternaspis scutata (6.1%). From the cluster analysis, the study area could be divided into three station groups. Station group AI was located in the inner bay and in the shallow coastal region, and its most dominant species was Heteromastus filiformis. At the station group AII in the mouth of bay and in some channel region, its most dominant species were Lumbrineris longifolia and Eteone longa. And at the station group B located in middle part of the bay, the most dominant specis was Sternaspis scutata. In comparison with previous studies, the benthic polychaetous community experienced great change in the view of species number, density and dominant species. The dominant species were Sternaspis scutata and Eteone longa, but their densities declined greatly. Instead of these species, Lumbrineris longifolia and Heteromastus filiformis, known as the potential organic enrichment indicator species, appeared to the new dominant species even if their low densities. These facts mean that Deugryang Bay was maintained yet as little organic enriched area compared to other bays on the coast of Korea, but needed some caution of marine environmental management.
Polychaete community structure and its spatial distribution was investigated in 2008 from inshore and offshore of Lake Shihwa, Korea, in order to evaluate status of the benthic environment according to construction of the dike and the water gate. In the present study, the number of species, density, and diversity of polychaete community in inshore was significantly different from those in offshore. The density of polychaete community in offshore increased with the number of species whereas the diversity in inshore increased with the number of species. Dominant species in offshore were 13 species, higher than 1% of the total polychaete individuals. Heteromastus filiformis, known as the most dominant species before the construction of the dike, was the most dominant species in offshore, which collectively account for 54% of the total polychaete individuals. In inshore, the seven species were dominant, higher than 1% of the total individuals. Lumbrineris longifolia, Polydora sp., Capitella capitata, Pseudopolydora paucibranchiata, known as pollution tolerant species, contributed to higher than 75% of the total individuals in inshore. Multivariate statistical analyses, non-metric multidimensional scaling, showed apparent difference in polychaete community structure between inshore and offshore, and also difference between inner sites and outer sites of inshore around the water gate. Sediment characteristics (total organic carbon and nitrogen, ignition loss, and acid volatile sulfide) measured in this study also supported to this result. Therefore, this indicates that the offshore provides better benthic environments for polychaete habitation than the inshore, and the inshore around the water gate shows improving benthic environment, compared to the inner inshore.
The spatial distributional pattern of macrobenthic fauna was investigated to assess the summer benthic environmental conditions in Gwangyang Bay, the southern coast of Korea. The macrobenthic faunal community from 38 sites in Gwangyang Bay comprised 154 species and showed an overall mean density of 1,280 individuals $m^{-2}$. Polychaetes were the most important component of the macrofaunal community in species richness, abundance and biomass. The dominant species in abundance were polychaetes like Tharyx sp. (44.8%), Lumbrineris longifolia (14.0%), Heteromastus filiformis (3.6%), a mussel Mytilus edulis, and an amphipod crustacean Corophium sinense. The abundance and biomass in the western part of the bay were lower than those in the channel regions and mouth of the bay. The community indices showed the same trend in the spatial distribution with the abundance and species richness. All macrobenthic faunas were assigned into a specific functional group according to their ecological responses to the environmental stress. The benthic community health based on the Benthic Pollution Index (BPI) or Biotic Coefficient (BC) seemed to be in the normal to unbalanced er transitional condition, indicated by the dominance of small polychaete worms like Tharyx sp. in the mouth part of the bay.
