  • The electric contact resistance between ball and disk was measured to estimate the real area of contact under dry and lubrication conditions. The results from the measured constriction resistance using the hypothesis of a single circular contact was compared with those of Hertzian contact theory and hardness. The resistance correlated well with the asperity contact area and friction when the ball slides on the flat disk spreaded with lubricant film. Therefore, the constriction resistance method was useful to identify the lubrication regimes with respect to various loads and speeds. The results of this work will aid in better prediction of lubrication regimes with respect to the operating conditions.

  • In this paper, the rolling-sliding contact problem of a layered semi-infinite solid compressed by a rigid surface is solved by finite element method based on the elasto-plastic theory. The purpose of this paper is to present the standard that is needed the later design. For this analysis, the principal parameters are layer thickness. Young's modulus ratio of layer and substrate and friction coefficient. In particular, this paper is interested in effect that layer thickness have influence upon displacement and shear and tensile stress at interface. For the layered material, the layer and the substrate behave elastic and linear-strain hardening respectively. For law friction, a relatively thin layer reduce the undesired maximum tensial stress but, for high friction, act contrary to the case of low friction.

  • Roughness of curved surfaces finished with flexible tools depends on the tool/work contact pressure and area. In this study, non-Hertzian closely conforming elastic contact theory is employed to analyze the tool/work contact and to generate a tool path producing a constant pressure at initial contact points. Finishing experiments on curved surfaced are conducted using the tool path. For comparison, curved surface finishing is also performed along the tool path producing a constant tool/work interference depth. It is demonstrated that the tool path of constant contact pressure improves the finished surface roughness.

  • Wheel-rail noise is normally classified into three catagories : rolling, squeal and impact noise. In this paper, rolling noise caused by the irregularity between a wheel and rail is analysed as follows: The irregularity between the wheel and rail is assumed as combination of sinusoidal profiles. Wheel-rail contact stiffness is linearized by using Hertzian contact theory, and then contact force between the wheel and rail is calculated. Vibration of the rail and wheel is calculated theoretically by receptance method or FEM depending on the geometry of wheel or rail for the frequency range of 100-5000Hz, important for noise generation. The radiation caused by those vibration is computed by BEM. To verify this analysis tools, rolling noise is calculated by preceding analysis steps using typical roughness data and it is compared with experimental rolling noise data. This analysis tools show reasonable results and used for the prediction of KTX rolling noise.

  • With the increasing interest in using bacterial biofilms in geo-engineering practices, such as soil improvement, sealing leakage in earth structures, and hydraulic barrier installation, understanding of the contribution of bacterial biofilm formation to mechanical and hydraulic behavior of soils is important. While mechanical properties of soft gel-like biofilms need to be identified for appropriate modeling and prediction of behaviors of biofilm-associated soils, elastic properties of biofilms remain poorly understood. Therefore, this study investigated the microscale Young's modulus of biofilms produced by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 in a liquid phase. The indentation test was performed on a biofilm sample using the atomic force microscopy (AFM) with a spherical indentor, and the force-indentation responses were obtained during approach and retraction traces. Young's modulus of biofilms was estimated to be ~33-38 kPa from these force-indentation curves and Hertzian contact theory. It appears that the AFM indentation result captures the microscale local characteristics of biofilms and its stiffness is relatively large compared to the other methods, including rheometer and hydrodynamic shear tests, which reflect the average macro-scale behaviors. While modeling of mechanical behaviors of biofilm-associated soils requires the properties of each component, the obtained results provide information on the mechanical properties of biofilms that can be considered as cementing, gluing, or filling materials in soils.

  • In this study, the Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory was combined with the instrumented indentation technique (IIT) to evaluate work of adhesion and modulus of elastomeric polymer. Indentation test was used to obtain the load-displacement data for contacts between Tungsten Carbide indenter and elastomeric polymer. And the JKR contact model, contrived to take viscoelastic effects of polymer into account, was applied to compensate the contact area and the elastic modulus which Hertzian contact model would underestimate and overestimate, respectively. Besides, we could obtain the thermodynamic work of adhesion by considering the surface energy in this contact model. In order to define the relation between JKR contact area and applied load without optical measuring of contact area, we used the relation between applied load and contact stiffness by examining the correlation between JKR contact area and stiffness through dimensional analysis with 14 kinds of elastomeric polymer. From this work, it could be demonstrated that the interfacial work of adhesion and elastic modulus of compliant polymer can be obtained from a simple instrumented indentation testing without area measurement, and provided as the main algorithm of compliant polymer characterization.

  • Ultrasonic atomic force microscopy (Ultrasonic-AFM) has been used to investigate the elastic property of the ultra-thin coating layer in a thin-film system. The modified Hertzian theory was applied to predict the contact resonance frequency through accurate theoretical analysis of the dynamic characteristics of the cantilever. We coat 200 nm thick Aluminum and Titanium thin films on the substrate using the DC Magnetron sputtering method. The amplitude and phase of the contact resonance frequency of a vibrating cantilever varies in response to the local stiffness constant. Ultrasonic-AFM images were obtained using the variations in the elastic property of the materials. The morphology of the surface was clearly observed in the Ultrasonic-AFM images, but was barely visible in the topography. This research demonstrates that Ultrasonic-AFM is a promising technique for visualizing the distribution of local stiffness in the nano-scale thin coatings.
