Objectives : The objectives of this study is to establish data-base to find out similar herbal formulas with a particular herbal formula by comparing composition ratio of configuring herbs. And this thesis is to analyze differences of prescriptions and find out similar prescriptions by utilizing galenical mass ratio, which is directly related to effectiveness of galenical. Methods : This study was proceeded by using Access 2007 with Window 7(MS) and 2,787 prescriptions of which herbal configuration could be indicated by weight unit were analysed from Donguibogam. We standardize all units of the prescription and input the mass ratio data when entered galenical data. Results : We could confirm a degree of similarity between compared prescriptions and a particular prescription according to the sum of differences of herb weight ratio and similarity ratio. Conclusions : A most similar herbal formula could be searched through comparing multi prescriptions by multi prescriptions of herbal configuration from established herbal formula data-base where herb weight ratio of prescriptions is to be input.
Objectives : Term standardization is the most important for knowledge information in every study. There are several tries to make terminology standards in Korean Traditional Medicine(KTM). We, authors took a review on romanized prescription nomenclature of main titles in Herbal Formula Science to criticize the ways of romanized prescription nomenclature. Methods : We extract romanized prescription name from Vol. 11, No. 1 to latest Issue Vol. 21, No. 1, Herbal Formula Science. Results : The Korean Academy of Oriental Medicine Prescription has guideline for romanized prescription nomenclature. However, only 6 out of 147 romanized prescription name are confirmed with guideline. In addition, 58 out of 142 names are italicized without guideline. Also there are several ways of marking for prescription names. Conclusions : For making knowledge information and easy searching for terms, we need normative regulations for romanized prescription nomenclature by the Society of Korean Medicine level.
Purpose : In 『Herbal Formula Science in Korean Medicine (HFSKM)』, the weight unit of Shanghanlun '1 Liǎng (一兩)' is mostly converted to 3 g. We tried to confirm whether the usages of the Shanghanlun prescriptions of HFSKM are valid in the view of safety and efficacy. Method : The toxicity of herbs in Shanghanlun were summarized. The prescriptions of HFSKM including herbs recorded by weight in Shanghanlun were compared with the pharmacopoeia usage. Domestic clinical case studies were analyzed to confirm the clinical evidence for safety and efficacy. Results : Glycyrrhizae Radix, Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, Persicae Semen, Ephedrae Herba, Pinelliae Tuber, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata, Asiasari Radix et Rhizoma, Armeniacae Semen and Scutellariae Radix have been reported to have toxicity. As a result of analyzing the 39 Shanghanlun prescriptions of HFSKM, 26 prescriptions were identified when they were within the pharmacopoeia usage, and 13 prescriptions were found in excess. As a result of analyzing the domestic clinical research papers, symptoms considered to be side effects were not mentioned, and improvement of the diseases was confirmed. As a result of measuring the actual weight, it was confirmed that the usage greatly exceeded the pharmacopoeia usage, such as 57.23 g for Pinelliae Tuber and 45.77 g for Armeniacae Semen. Conclusion : The composition of the prescription for Shanghanlun proposed in HFSKM is considered to be a reasonable dose, but continuous review and standard supplementation are necessary.
Objective : This study aims to study core herbs and formulas in Internal medicine on Spleen system, to enhance efficiency in teaching Internal medicine on Spleen system, Herbalogy, Formula science, and to increase integration of the courses. Methods : Frequency notion, which was generally used in previous studies, was used in this study along with network analysis. Results : Frequently used herbs, herbs with high centrality, frequently combined herbs and core formula were found in this study. The herb with the highest frequency and centrality was 'Citri Unshius Pericarpium', and 'Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba - Citri Unshius Pericarpium' was the most frequent herb combination. The results of network analysis showed a total of 5 herbal communities of combination. Conclusion : Core herbs were found based on the frequency notion, which is a traditional analysis method. Also, core herbs, herbal combinations, formulas that can that may be overlooked when using frequency notions were found by using network analysis. The results may lead to enhancing efficiency in the education of Internal medicine on Spleen system, Herbalogy, Formula science courses and the integration of courses.

The current study aims to analyze the acceptance of International Standard Terminology (IST) related to herbs and formulas used in Korea. It also intends to examine limitations of each term source by linking texts for herbal medicine research and formula research used in schools of oriental medicine with medicinal substance-formula classification names within the IST framework. This study examined 64 medicinal classification names of IST, including synonyms, 41 formula classification names, 65 classification names of "Herbal Medicine Study," 89 medicinal classification names of "Shin's Clinical Herbal Medicine Study," and lastly 83 formula classification names of "Formula Study." Data on their chief virtue, efficacy and characteristics as medicinal substances were extracted from their definitions, and such data were used to perform Chinese character-English mapping using the IST. The outcomes of the mapping were then analyzed in terms of both lexical matching and semantic matching. In terms of classification names for medicinal substances, "Herbal Medicine Study" had 60.0% lexical matching, whereas "Shin's Clinical Herbal Medicine Study" had 48.3% lexical matching. When semantic matching was also applied, "Herbal Medicine Study" showed a value of 87.7% and "Shin's Clinical Herbal Medicine Study" 74.2%. In terms of formula classification names, lexical matching was 28.9% of 83 subjects, and when semantic matching was also considered, the value was 30.1%. When the conceptual elements of this study were applied, some IST terms that are classified with other codes were found to be conceptually consistent, and some terms were not accepted due to different depths in the classification systems of each source.
Objective : Classification of herbal formulas through the analysis of compositional herb's is a suitable method in the aspects of the effective applications of herbal formulas. However, these classification methods have some problems in dealing with lots of herbal formulas because the estimations of herbal formula's effects are dependent upon one's memory. In this study, we aimed to establish the effective methodology to elicit the classified herbal formula's chart by introducing the DB systems without interfering with non-standard terms. Results : We have known that this plan is realized by follow methods. We entered the herbs informations of the composition of herbal formulas into database, made an alias tables of corresponding herbs, and achieved standardization of herb's informations. Using these databases, we made the classified herbal formula's chart according to the presence and the treatment informations of herbs.
Objectives : The process of disease treatment in traditional medicine is defined as differentiating patterns and determining treatment. As an important part of this process, the herbal formulas are specific combinations or configurations of medicinal herbs that serve as tools for treatment. As clinical experience increased, the number of herbal formulas also increased. For example, there are 61,739 herbal formulas in Pujifang, and 96,592 in Dictionary of traditional chinese medicine prescriptions. In chapter of Release the exterior syndrome (RES; 解表劑) of textbook, the 42 formulas were presented. For the understanding on the formula, most of books explained with description or figure about the formulas. But there is no study on the interrelationship of each herbal formulas. This study investigated the interrelationship of RES herbal formulas. Methods : The RES herbal formulas were analyzed with the ingredients, actions and clinical applications by literature study. Results : To improve cognition the interrelationship of RES herbal formulas, we analyzed the formulas and established the 19 interrelations of herbal formulas. Conclusions : Finally, this study established the interrelation of herbal formula as one figure. This result could contribute to improve cognition the interrelationship of RES.
Objectives: To establish the expiration date of herbal decoction pouch, the change in antimicrobial activities was measured according to storage temperature and period. Methods: Five herbal formulas, Gyeji-tang, Jakyakgamcho-tang, Saengmaek-san, Paljung-san, and Dangguisu-san, with antimicrobial activity were selected from 51 herbal formulas commonly used in traditional Korean medical institutions. Five herbal formula decoction pouches were prepared and stored at room temperature (RT) or 4℃ from 0 to 12 weeks to evaluate the antimicrobial activity against Bacillus cereus, Listeria monocytogenes, or Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The antimicrobial activities were evaluated by the disk diffusion method (disk size: 10 mm). Results: The decoction pouches of Gyeji-tang and Jakyakgamcho-tang maintained antimicrobial activity against V. parahaemolyticus from week 0 (14 mm) to week 12 (14 mm) at both temperatures. Saengmaek-san pouch had antimicrobial activities against V. parahaemolyticus and B. cereus from week 0 (19 mm and 20 mm) to week 12 (both 18 mm), respectively. At RT and 4℃, the antimicrobial activity of Paljung-san pouch was maintained week 0 (17 mm) to week 12 (both 13 mm) against B. cereus. Against L. monocytogenes, the antimicrobial activity of Dangguisu-san pouch showed 27 mm at week 0 and 23 mm (RT) and 24 mm (4℃) at week 12, respectively. Conclusion: According to increase of the storage duration, the antimicrobial activities of 5 herbal formula decoction pouches decreased slightly but remained up to 12 weeks. These results can be used as important data to establish the expiration date of herbal formula decoction pouches.
