The aim of this study was to define the range of the menstrual blood loss(MBL), and the upper limit of the MBL associated with iron deficiency anemia in Korean women, For this purpose, healthy unmarried women between the age of 15 to 26 years were selected from July to September, 1979 and results obtained were used for determining baseline MBL and its relationship to iron nutriture. One houndred forteen women were tested for their MBL and hematological and biochemical data such as hemoglobin(Hb) concentration, hematocrit, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration(MCHC), and serum iron and ferritin concentration. This study was partly supported by World Health Organization. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1) The mean values and standard error of mean of MBL were $30.7{\pm}2.19ml$ for total subjects, $30.4{\pm}3.14ml$ for sutjects below 20 years of age and $30.3{\pm}2.49ml$ for subjects aged more than 20 years. No significant variation was noted for amount of MBL between two age groups. 2) The median value and 95th percentile value of MBL were 26.5ml and 69.0ml respectively for total subjects. Maximum number (24.6%) of the subjects fell in group with 10-20ml of MBL while 10.5% showed MBL above 50m1. 3) Mean value of the duration of menstruation for total subjects was 4.34 days. 4) It was observed that mean values of Hb concentration, hematocrit and MCHC were decreased slightly in subjects showing MBL more than 40m1. Serum iron and ferritin levels were markedly decreased in women with MBL above 40m1 and 20-30ml, respectively. 5) In subject population showing MBL above 50ml, the frequency of subjects with hematological and biochemical data below anemia criteria were remarkably increased. 6) Although the number of subjects tested was small and the subject selection was not done by random stratified sampling from a population group, this study suggested that the upper normal limit of MBL of Korean women seems to be in the range of 40-50ml.
Hematotoxicity and vascular irritation of DA-125, a new anthracycline antitumor antibiotic, were investigated in mice and rabbits. In hematotoxicity study, healthy male ICR mice were treated with DA-125 by a single intravenous injection at doses of 18 and 24 mg/kg. After 4, 8, 12 and 16 days WBC count, RBC count, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit value, and platelet counts were measured respectively. As a positive control, 12 mg/kg of doxorubicin (DXR) was used in the same manner. Remakable reductions of WBC counts in groups treated with DA-125 or DXR were observed 4 days after administration and returned to normal range 8 days after injection in groups of DA-125 18 mg/kg and DXR 12 mg/kg. The recovery of leukopenia induced in a group of DA-125 24 mg/kg took about 16 days after administration. The RBC counts, hemoglobin concentrations and hematocrit values also decreased in all drug treated groups on day 8 and recovered thereafter. The platelet counts of groups treated with DA-125 or DXR decreased on day 4 and recovered from day 8 of experiment. Local vascular irritation of DA-125 was also assessed in rabbits. The obtained results can be summarized as follows. 1. Thrombophlebitis was not induced even after daily intravenous administration of 0.4% solution of DA-125 or 0.2% solution of DXR for 7 days. 2. Macro- and microscopic observations revealed that the irritative activity of 0.4% solution of DA-125 in blood vessels was not so much different from that of saline when they were injected once a day into vein retroauricularis of rabbits for 7 days. 3. Mild inflammatory reaction was noted around vessels in rabbits treated with 0.2% solution of DXR after consecutive intravenous infusion for more than 5 days. 4. The potencies of vascular irritation of the test solutions were summarized in the following order; saline = 0.4% DA-125<0.2% DXR. These results indicated that DA-125 showed similar pattern of hematotoxicity with DXR but was less hematotoxic than DXR, and that 0.4% solution of DA-125 did not elicit unusual toxic properties when injected through intravenous route for clinical practice.
Clinical experience on 16 cases of open heart surgery under the extracorporeal circulation with mild or moderate hypothermia and partial hemodilution technique at the National Medical Center during the period from June 1976 to October 1977. Nine of sixteen were congenital heart disease and seven were acquired heart disease. The age of the patient ranged between 6 and 48 years. The body weight varied from 18.5kg to 60kg and body surface area 0. 79-1.70m2. The average priming volume of pump oxygenator was 2080 ml, which was consisted fresh ACD blood, buffered Hartmann`s solution, Mannitol, 50% dextrose in water and Vit. C. The average hemodilution rate was 27%. The average flow 2.3 L/min/m2 or 80 ml/min and the duration of perfusion varied from 31 min to 270 min with average of 107 min. The perfusion was carried out under the mild or moderate hypothermia using core cooling alone in 10 cases, core cooling and local myocardial cooling with $0-4^{\circ}C$ physiologic saline in 2 cases. From a hemodynamic point of view, the blood pressure dropped down around 80 mmHg after the initiation of perfusion follwed by increase to safety level and stable during the perfusion. The central venous pressure remained within normal limits. In most cases, hemoglobin and hematocrit decreased during and after the perfusion. Hemogiobin level was decreased, average of 20.6 %, hematocrit 18.6%, pletelets 55% postoperatively. Plasma hemoglobin increased moderately, from preperfusion average valve of 7.79 mg % to post-perfusion value of 54.7 mg %. Electrolytes changes during cardiopulmonary bypass showed definite hypokalemia but changes of Na, Ca were not definite. Arterial blood gas analysis during cardiopulmonary bypass suggested that the metabolic acidosis which was accompanied by respiratory alkalosis which was corrected postoperatively. As the opera tive complication, transient hemoglobinuria in 4 cases and neurological signs in 2 cases were all cured. There were 2 death cases and operative mortality rate was 12.5%.
Normal reference values for hematological parameters were evaluated using 85 male Elk deer reared in Korea. The reference interval estimated were 6.01-9.93 (${\times}10^6/mm^3$) for the red blood cell count, 10.90-19.70 (g/dl) for the hemoglobin concentration, 43.10-76.40 (%) for the hematocrit value, and 2.60-7.68 (${\times}10^6/mm^3$) for the total white blood cell count. Our estimates were compared with previously reported values for these parameters in Korea and other countries.
Present experiments were undertaken in order to clarify the clinico-pathological characteristics of lead poisoning in goats. Twenty goats were divided into three experimental groups(A, B and C) and a control(D). The three experimental groups received diets contaminated artificially with 10(A group), 200(B group) and 1,000(C group) ${\mu}g/$ of lead, for 70 days respectively. The control group received normal diets. Blood samples were collected 1 or 2 weeks interval and were examined for anemia(erythrocyte counts, hemoglobin concentrations and hematocrit values) and lead contents of erythrocyte and serum. Urine samples collected similarly with blood were examined for delta-aminolevulinic acid and lead content. Collected samples were analyzed for lead content by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. From these experiments following results were obtained : In group B and C, marked decreases in body weight and feed intake, and diarrhea were observed from the $30^{th}$ day of experimental periods. The B and C groups showed pronounced anemia(decrease in erythrocyte count, hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit value) from the $21^{st}$ or $42^{nd}$ day. In group B and C, the lead content of erythrocytes was increased significantly from the $28^{th}$ or $14^{th}$ day. The lead content of serum was increased significantly from the $42^{nd}$ or $14^{th}$ day in B and C groups. The lead content of urine was increased significantly from the first day in both B and C groups. The urinary delta-aminolevulinic acid content was increased significantly from $14^{th}$ day in both B and C groups.

Pharmacokinetic parameters and dosage of aminoglycosides (AGs) were studied retrospectively in 36 patients with neutropenic fever after stem cell transplantation in Seoul National University Hospital from July 1996 to June 2001. AGs pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated with steady-state peak and trough serum drug concentrations by the method of Sawchuk and Zaske et at. The calculated aminoglycosides volume of distribution and clearance were greater than population value $(0.36\pm0.06\;L/kg,\;116\pm32\;ml/min/1.73\;m^2,\;respectively)$. The average dosage of aminoglycosides required to maintain optimal serum AGs concentration was also greater than recommended dose in insert paper. The average dosage of amikacin was $11\pm2.1$ mg/kg every 12 hours (In case of tobramycin, $2.09\pm0.37$ mg/kg every 8 hours or $2.59\pm0.20$ mg/kg every 12 hours). The relationship between AGs volume of distribution and sex, serum albumin (g/dl), body mass index $(kg/m^2)$, body weight change $(\%)$, the amount of fluid inpu (ml/kg/day), the degree of hematocrit decrease $(\%)$ were studied respectively. Univariate anlysis revealed that body mass index $(kg/m^2)$, the amount of fluid input (ml/kg/day) and the degree of hematocrit decrease $(\%)$ had significant correlation with aminoglycosides volume of distribution. But sex, serum albumin, body weight change $(\%)$ had no significant correlation with aminoglycosides volume of distribution.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the mechanism of anemia associated with Dangguibohyel-tang (DBT) in rats. Using cyclophosphamide-induced (30mg/kg BW) anemic rats, changes in weight gain, the levels of red blood cell (RBC), hematocrit (Hct), platelet and hemoglobin (Hgb), serum vitamin B12, ALT(GPT) levels and erythropoietin (EPO) gene expression were monitored, and compared with DBT (1,000mg/kg BW, 14d)-treated and EPO (1,000IU/kg BW, 14d, s.c.)-treated rats. Food efficiency ratio (FER) were 31.6%, in normal group, 28.1% in cyclophosphamide-induced control group, 31.7% in DBT-treated group and 25.1%, in EPO-treated group after 14 days. The levels of red blood cell (RBC), hematocrit (Hct), platelet and hemoglobin (Hgb) of DBT-treated group were significantly higher than those of control. And DBT extract administered group showed dominant effects on the recovery of Hgb level. Serum vitamin B12 and ALT(GPT) levels were significantly increased at DBT-treated groups. EPO gene expression was decreased 91,9% in control group, 79.6% in DBT-treated group and 53.9% in EPO-treated group, respectively. These results suggest that administration of DBT could prevent human patient from chemotherapy derived anemia by improving hematological value and EPO status.
Experiments were carried out to investigate the growth and hematological parameters of rock bream Oplegnathus fasciatus exposed to several different concentrations (0, 1, 2, 4, $8{\mu}g/L$) of tributyltin (TBT) for 4 weeks. Growth rate of the fish exposed to $8{\mu}g/L$ of TBT concentration was significantly lower than that of control group fish. The major hematological findings were significant decreases in the red blood cell count, hematocrit value and hemogobin concentration in the fish exposed to $8{\mu}g/L$. Although serum glucose concentration was significantly reduced compared to the control group, total protein concentration was found to be significantly increased over the control group. Exposure to $8{\mu}g/L$ of TBT concentration resulted in significant increase in the enzyme activities, such as glutamic oxalate transminase and glutamic pyruvate transminase in the fish. The present findings suggest that exposure to $8{\mu}g/L$ concentration of TBT can cause significant changes in growth and hematological parameters of rock bream Oplegnathus fasciatuso.
This study was carried out to investigate the nutritional status of physically handicapped children with cerebral palsy in order to contribute to their welfare by studying their healthy status, nutrient intake, daily energy expenditure, and living environment. The survey was conducted at two rehabilitation institutions from May 25 to June 30, 1981. A special questionnaire was designed to investigate the living environment. The 24 hr. recall method was used in evaluation the nutrient intake of 67 children. Anthropometric measurement was made of height, weight, chestgirth, upper-arm circumference, and triceps skinfold thickness. The biochemical status of the children with cerebral palsy was assessed with measurement of hemoglobin and hematocrit. The results may be summarized as follows : 1. The children with cerebral palsy, the intakes of all nutrients except vitamin A, thiamin, and ascorbic acid were lower than Korean recommend dietary allowances (1980). They had significantly higher intakes of vitamin A and calcium than the normal children, but the calcium intake was low as 62% of the Korea RDA. 2. All the children with cerebral palsy were very short and low weight in comparison with the accepted standards, but chestgirth was above the accepted standards for Korean school children. 3. The average hemoglobin value was 12.2gm%, hematocrit 39.3%, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) 31.1%. 4. The possible etiological factors of cerebral palsy were, prenatal factors 16%, natal 44.9%, postnatal 27.5%, and unknown 11.6%. Eighty four percent of the children showed their first symptoms within the first year after birth. 5. Thirty percent of the parents said that the handicapped children lead to marital problems, and 84.1% of the parents mentioned that medical expenses for the children influenced their family finances.
The purpose of this study was to obtain reference data of parameters for hematological health diagnosis in marine fish and also evaluate application of veterinary chemistry analyzer used to those blood tests. A blood profile of total 522 fish for black rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli), red seabream (Pagrus major), rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatu) and black seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegeli) cultured in mari-floating netcage of Gyeongnam province was determined by hematocrit (Ht), hemoglobin (Hb) and blood chemistry tests (total protein, albumin, alkaline phosphatase, blood urea nitrogen, lactate dehydrogenase, triglyceride, total cholesterol, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, glucose). Ht was measured by microhematocrit method. Hb and plasma chemistry were analysed by establishing baseline ranges for a dry chemical system of FUJI DRI-CHEM 3000. Actually recorded values of Hb and plasma chemistry by the analyzer were notably outside from the minimum and/or maximum of the established reference value. Albumin and alanine aminotransferase were not detectable in the range of 68~66%. Lactate dehydrogenase, total protein, alkaline phosphatase and glucose were not detectable in the range of 42~21%. Total cholesterol, aspartate aminotransferase, triglyceride, hemoglobin and creatinine were not detectable in the range of 18~3%. However, the values of blood urea nitrogen were below the detectable limits of the analyzer.
