The program educates hypertensives in community areas about blood pressure, self-care, health promoting behaviors, and life satisfaction. For this purpose a one group time series design was used. Sixteen subjects were evaluated from S Community Health center of B city. Self-help programs developed by the author were given to the subjects. The whole program was carried out from October to December in 2002. Data was analyzed by repeated measure ANOVA, and post-hoc Turkey. The results were as follows: There were significant relationships between changes in systolic pressure(F=10.638. P=.000), diastolic pressure(F=6.783. p=.013), self-care(F=13.506. p=.000), and health promoting behavior(F=9.067. p=.001) at the 6th week and the 9th week. There were no significant relationships between changes in life satisfaction at the 6th week or 9th week. From these results, it can be concluded that the self-help program is an effective nursing strategy to promote self-care of hypertensives in community areas.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate adolescents' coping strategies to various stressors, and to examine factors that related to their coping strategies. The subjects of the study were 355 middle school and 398 high school students. Adolescents' coping strategy was examined with a revision of the Family Crisis Oriented Personal Scale (McCubbin, Olson, & Larson, 1982). Quality of life was measured by an 11-item scale selected from Quality of Life (Olson & Barnes, 1982) in the areas of family, friend, relationship with relatives, and health and community. Parent-adolescent communication was divided into two dimensions of open communication and problem communication, using Parent-Adolescent Communication(Barnes & Olson, 1982). A measure of the self-esteem of adolescents was obtained by using selected items from the Self-Esteem Inventory(Coopersmith, 1967) and Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965). Five types of coping strategies were found. These are "help from relatives/neighbors", "help from families", "self-help", "help from friends", and "help from religion". Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to examine significant predictor variables for adolescents' coping strategies. Sex, age, quality of parent-adolescent communication, family cohesion and adaptability, religion, and self-esteem were found important in predicting the types of coping strategies by adolescents.

Methods: To analyze types of experience that middle aged women attending the self help group went through to overcome midlife crisis, Q-methodology has been used. The 32 selected Q-samples from each of 27 subjects were classified into a shape of normal distribution using a 9-point scale. The collected data were analyzed using a QUANL PC program. The 38 selected Q-samples from each of 27 subjects were classified into a shape of normal distribution using a 9-point scale. The collected data were analyzed using a QUANL PC program. Results: The types of experience were classified into four categories; Type I (attempt to change), Type II (devoted to my role), Type III (tolerance and acceptance) and Type IV (role as a senior citizen). Conclusion: This study is significant in that it has attempted to analyze the approach and usefulness of a self-help group program. It is suggestive that a local society support group may be necessary to help people with midlife crisis and further studies for nursing intervention and strategic development are required.

  • The authors developed 28 needs assessment tools for integrated assessment centered on needs, which is the core element in care management for the elderly in home. Also, the authors collected the assessment data of 676 elderly persons in home from 120 centers under the Korea Association of Senior Welfare Centers by using the needs assessment tools, and finally developed needs extraction algorithm through decision tree analysis in data mining to identify their actual needs and provide social welfare service suitable for such needs. The needs extraction algorithm for 28 needs of the elderly in home are summarized in

. The Need No. 8 "Having need of help in going out" of the decision-making model, for example, was divided into 80.3% of asking for help and 11.4% not asking for help with Appeal No. 23 as a major variable. The need increased by 87.9% when the elderly appealed for help to go out and they had a caregiver but decreased by 47.4% when they had no caregiver. When the elderly asked for help in going out, they had a caregiver, and they needed complete help in cleaning, their need of help in going out was shown as 94.2%. However, seen from their answer that they needed complete help in bathing of ADL even if they did not ask for help in going out, it was found that the need of help in going out sharply increased from 11.4% to 80.0%. On the other hand, when they needed partial help or self-supported in bathing, the potential for them to be classified as asking for help in going out was shown to be low as 7.7%. In the said decision-making model, the number of cases for parent node and child node was designated as 50 and 25, respectively, with level 5 of the maximum tree depth as stopping rule. By this, it was shown that their decision-making was found to be effective as 182.13% for the need "Having need of help in going out". The algorithm presented in this study can be useful as systematic and scientific fundamental data in assessment of needs of the elderly in home.
