  • The helicopter development technology is improved by the increasing of computing power and advanced test facilities. The increasing efficiency of fuel consuming by the developing of improved lift-to-drag rotor system is the major issue, the noise reduction for ecology(civil area) and increase of survivability to reduce noise detection(battlefield) also are important. This investigation shows the helicopter external noise flight test methods, conventional military helicopter's(UH-60) experimental results and the numerical modeling method for aero-acoustic of rotor blade and the result of CAA(Computational Aero-Acoustic) for main rotor blade.

  • This paper focuses on the application of the proposed aerodynamic optimization techniques to design the blade planform of helicopter rotors. The design problems are formulated to maximize the hover figure of merit and the equivalent lift-to-drag ratio for high forward speed by optimally distributing airfoils, twist, and chord along the blade span. The numerical characters are investigated by solving various design problems. The advantages and limitations with the present design approach and the present modeling features for performance prediction are discussed. The recommendations for the required model refinements to get more accurate optimal configurations are addressed as future research areas.

  • The noise is one of the serious problems concerning helicopters operations. The issue of helicopter external noise generated mainly from a helicopter rotor has always affected the use of rotorcrafts, especially in the urban environment. The noise sources depend on the flight configurations. In particular, a noise generated by the interaction between blades and tip vortices mainly occurs during descent flight. This noise is called blade-vortex interaction (BVI) noise, and this BVI noise is particularly penalizing for helicopters. In this paper, a numerical study to capture the BVI noise is carried out. The numerical study is performed in two phases. In the first phase, a 2D simulation based on parallel BYI event of Kitapliglu et al experiment is performed. In the second phase, 3D simulation based on HART Ⅱ experiment is performed. Several experimental data such as thrust, torque, blade sectional load, its derivative and vortex location are compared with calculation results and the comparison showed reasonably good agreement.

  • In this paper, an optimization study on a helicopter rotor blade cross-section was made. Generalization was made to the baseline cross-section to simplify the analysis. To have better performance in aeroelastic response, with the aerodynamic center being the origin of the baseline, the distance between aerodynamic center and shear center, and the distance between mass center and shear center of the blade were minimized. For efficient searching of optimum solutions over the design space, grid search method, which is a method of graphical search was used. Two design variables, radius of balancing weight at leading edge, and offset of the spar from leading edge were selected for the study. Cubic spline interpolation method was used to accommodate searching of the optimum solution. 2-Leveled searching system was devised in accordance with the interpolation method. Optimum solution was found to show 6% decrease in both distance between aerodynamic center and shear center, and mass center and shear center to the baseline.

  • This paper addresses a method for structural optimum design of composite rotor blade. The basic model of a composite helicopter main rotor blade is designed and its parameters determining the structural/dynamic properties are studied. Through the investigation of flap/lag/torsional stiffness, the structural properties of the model are analyzed. In this study, helicopter rotor blades are analyzed by using VABS. The computer program VABS (Variational Asymptotic Beam Section Analysis) uses the variational asymptotic method to split a three-dimensional nonlinear elasticity problem into a two dimensional cross-sectional analysis and a one-dimensional nonlinear beam problem. This is accomplished by taking advantage of certain small parameters inherent to beam-like structures. In addition, the rotational stability of the blade is estimated by the frequency diagram from FE analysis(MSC.Patran/Nastran) to understand its vibrational property. From the result, design parameters to determine and optimize the properties of the model are presented.

  • Fatigue properties of composite materials are extremely important to design durable and reliable helicopter rotor blades. However, it is very difficult to apply conventional fatigue test loads in short period. Therefore, accelerating test speed and facilitating spectrum load realization are required. In this study, we have developed a fatigue testing method that uses a resonance of simply supported beam type blade specimen. This test consists in exciting the blade specimen with a frequency that corresponds to its natural frequency. In that case, the test specimen similar to a beam fixed between two pivot points starts vibrating and is significantly deformed. Resonant fatigue tests were performed by changing exciting vertical amplitude and frequency, and S-N curves of each composite materials were successfully obtained.

  • In this paper a method for the design optimization for helicopter rotor blade in hover is studied Numerical analysis of aerodynamic characteristics of the flow around a rotor blade is analysed by usign panel method and CFD code based on Navier-Stokes equation. The result is validated by comparing with existing experimental result. Optimization methods RSM(Response Surface Method) and DOE(Design of Experiments) are applied in combination. The object functions are power, twist angle, taper ratio, and thrust. The optimized result showed a decrease of 17% of the power required.

  • Purpose: While an unmanned helicopter has been extensively used for spraying chemicals on agricultural crops, its low utilization (two months per year from July to August) has recently become an issue. This study aimed to increase the utilization of the unmanned helicopter. The centrifugal rice seeder, a mounting device for rice seeding for unmanned helicopter was developed and assessed its performance. Methods: The concept of the centrifugal spraying device was to obtain design criteria for centrifugal distribution. Four types of blade shapes namely straight, curved, straight wing and curved wing were developed and used. The rotational speed of the blades was tested at 1,000, 1,200 and 1,400 rpm. Results: The blade shapes, rotational blade speed and angle of trajectory were theoretically analyzed and results were validated with a series of laboratory experiments. Conclusions: The curved wing blades provided the distribution uniformity (DU) at 1,200rpm of rotational speed and 60 degree of seed drop point. The spray uniformity of 4.2% was also achieved.

  • Self-noise from the rotor blade of the UH-1H Helicopter is obtained numerically by using the Brooks' empirical noise model. All of the five noise sources are compared with each other in frequency domain. From the calculated results the bluntness noise reveals dominant noise sources at small angel of attack, whereas the separation noise shows main noise term with gradually increasing angel of attack. From the results of two different tip Mach numbers with the change of angel of attack, the OASPLs at M = 0.8 show about 15dB larger than those at M = 0.4.
