  • In this study, three-dimensional numerical calculations are peformed to simulate the flow and heat transfer in helically coiled tube steam generator employing a commercial CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code. The problem considered herein includes the boiling phase change flow of tube side fluid and the single-phase counter-current flow of shell side hot fluid transferring heat to the tube side flow thru the tube wall. Detailed investigations are performed for both shell-side and tube-side flow fields in terms of density and volume fractions of each phase of fluids as well as for the tube wall heat transfer field in terms of heat transfer coefficients.

  • Heat transfer performance are studied for the turbulent flow of water in 3 smooth tube coils having ratios of coil to tube diameter of 16, 21 and 27, and a corrugated-coiled tube having a ratio of coil to tube diameter of 29, for Reynolds numbers from 8000 to 60000 and is also compared with the limited results available to data. The experiments are carried out for the fully developed turbulent flow of water in tube coils under the condition of uniform heat flux. This work is limited 0 tube coils of R/a between 10 and 30. The tube having a ratio of coil to tube diameter of 27 among the 3 smooth tube coils shows the best heat transfer performance. The performance of coiled tube best transfer performance. The performance of coiled tube with a similar curvature ratio is better for a corrugated-coiled tube(R/a=17) than for a smooth coiled tube(R/a=16). An empirical relation which correlates most of the data within $\pm$25% was also developed. Test result shows that the Nusselt number is found to be affected by a secondary flow due to curvature.

  • In this study, turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics in a helically coiled tube have been numerically investigated. Helically coiled tubes are commonly used in heat exchange systems to enhance the heat transfer rate. Accordingly, they have been widely studied experimentally; however, most studies have focused on the pressure drop and heat transfer correlations. The centrifugal force caused by a helical tube increases the wall shear stress and heat transfer rate on the outer side of the helical tube while decreasing those on the inner side of the tube. Therefore, this study quantitatively shows the variation of the local Nusselt number and friction factor along the circumference at the wall of a helical tube by varying the coil diameter and Reynolds number. It is seen that the local heat transfer rate and wall shear stress greatly decrease near the inner side of the tube, which can affect the safety of the tube materials. Moreover, this study verifies the previous experimental correlations for the friction factor and Nusselt number, and it shows that the correlation between the two in a straight tube can be applied to a helical tube. It is expected that the results of this study can be used as important data for the safety evaluation of heat exchangers and steam generators.

  • The resistance coefficient and heat transfer performance are studied for the turbulent water flow in a smooth coiled tube having variable curvature ratios and a corrugated-coiled tube having a ratio of coil to tube diameter of 22. Experiments are carried out for the fully developed turbulent flow of water in tube coils on the uniform wall temperature condition. This work is limited to tube coils of R/a between 22 and 60 and Reynolds numbers from 13000 to 53000. The tube having a ratio of coil to tube diameter of 27 among the 3 smooth tube coils shows the best heat transfer performance. A corrugated-coiled tube(R/a=60) shows more excellent performance than a smooth coiled tub (R/a=60) at a similar curvature ratio. The friction factor f is sensitive to changes in the velocity profile caused by a temperature gradient. Allowance was made for the pressure loss in the short inlet and outlet lengths and due to the presence of the thermocouple inlet and outlet as a result of separate experimental on a straight tube. It is to be expected that the allowance at the exit will be somewhat too low because of secondary flow effects carried over from the coil.

  • The Helically coiled tube Once-Through Steam Generator (H-OTSG) is a key piece of equipment for compact small reactors. The present study developed and verified a thermal-hydraulic design and performance analysis computer code for a countercurrent H-OTSG installed in a small pressurized water reactor. The H-OTSG is represented by one characteristic tube in the model. The secondary side of the H-OTSG is divided into single-phase liquid region, nucleate boiling region, postdryout region, and single-phase vapor region. Different heat transfer correlations and pressure drop correlations are reviewed and applied. To benchmark the developed physical models and the computer code, H-OTSGs developed in Marine Reactor X and System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor are simulated by the code, and the results are compared with the design data. The overall characteristics of heat transfer area, temperature distributions, and pressure drops calculated by the code showed general agreement with the published data. The thermal-hydraulic characteristics of a typical countercurrent H-OTSG are analyzed. It is demonstrated that the code can be utilized for design and performance analysis of an H-OTSG.

  • In order to develop the compact and flexible heat exchangers, we made the helically coiled heat exchangers. They can be manufactured with small diameter copper tubes without the need for fins; inner diameter=1.0 mm, straight tube length=1.5 m. The experiments were carried out with the following conditions; evaporation pressure=0.6 MPa, air velocity=0.7 ∼ 1.7 m/s, and working fluid=R-22. Pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient of heat exchangers were experimented according to the air velocity. The results of heat transfer coefficient show a 35% beneficial increase fur these heat exchangers over the other covered fin-tube heat exchangers. A cooling capacity of about 3 kW was obtained with an air velocity of 1.5 m/s. The distribution header has also been designed fur efficient distribution of refrigerant flow.

  • The flow analysis has been made by applying the turbulent models in the helically coiled tubes of heat transfer. The k-${\varepsilon}$ and Spalart-Allmaras turbulent models are used in which the structured grid is applied for the simulation. The velocity vector, the pressure contour, the change of residuals along the iteration number and the friction factors are simulated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations to make clear the Reynolds number effect. The helical tube increases the centrifugal forces by which the wall shear stress become larger on the outer side of the tube. The centrifugal force makes the heat transfer rate locally larger due to the increase of the flow energy, which finds out the close relationship between the pressure drop and friction factor in the internal flow. The present numerical results are compared with others, for example, in the value of friction factor for validation.

  • A solar hot water storage tank was designed and constructed to examine the heat exchange performances on load side for the solar thermal storage in a single loop solar water heating system. In the tank helically coiled tube was immersed. The hot water was circulated from either top or bottom. The circulation flow rate was varied from 500 ml/min to 20,000 ml/min. The effect of flow rate was observed. The thermal performances according to the flow rate and flow direction were examined. The temperature distributions in the tank and inside of the tubes were plotted along the process of cooling.

  • In this work, we studied the shell and helically coiled tube heat exchangers. Shell and coil heat exchangers with different rate of water flow and plate heat exchanger with same capacity were tested for condensing conditions. We proposed design guide using modified Wilson plot method. We compared fouling characteristics between shell and coil heat exchanger and plate heat exchanger, when they were washed and were not washed. The shell and coil heat exchanger showed 120% of higher saturated fouling resistance value and 4% of better heat transfer ratio than the plate heat exchanger.
