  • To evaluate the effect of carbonization temperature of charcoal on the heavy metal adsorption property, Quercus mongolica wood and Larix kaempferi bark powder (100~60 mesh) were carbonized at between 400 and $900^{\circ}C$ at intervals of $100^{\circ}C$. In the properties of carbonized materials which affect the adsorption ability, pH increased with increasing the carbonization temperature, so that the pHs of wood and bark charcoal carbonized at $900^{\circ}C$ were 10.8 and 10.4, respectively. Also, in both materials, the carbon content ratio became larger as the carbonization temperature was raised. At the same carbonization temperature, carbon content ratio of the bark charcoal tended to be greater than that of the wood charcoal. In case of iodine adsorption which indicates the adsorption property in liquid phase, the wood charcoal showed higher adsorption value than the bark charcoal. From the investigation of adsorptive elimination properties of the charcoals against 15 ppm Cd, Zn, and Cu, the higher the carbonization temperature, the greater elimination ratio was. In comparison, the wood charcoal presented higher elimination ratio than that of the bark charcoal. In the wood charcoals carbonized at higher than $500^{\circ}C$, especially, 0.2 g of the charcoal was enough to eliminated almost 100% of the heavy metal ions. Heavy metal ion elimination ratio of the charcoals depended on the kinds of adsorbates. The effectiveness of adsorbates in adsorptive elimination by the charcoals were in order of Cu > Cd > Zn. This is because the physicochemical interaction between the adsorbate and adsorbent affects their adsorption properties, it is considered that subsequent researches are needed to improve the effectiveness of heavy metal adsorption by the charcoals.

  • Struvite (MgNH4PO4 ⋅ 6H2O) and hydroxyapatite (HAP, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) precipitation in urine-separating toilets (NoMix toilets) causes severe maintenance problems and also reduce the phosphate and calcium content. Application of urine separating technique and extraction of by-products from human urine is a cost effective technique in waste water treatment. In this study, we extract urine calcite from human urine by batch scale method, using urease producing microbes to trigger the precipitation and calcite formation process. Extracted urine calcite (calcining at 800℃) is a potential adsorbent for removal of heavy metal(loid)s like (Cd2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Zn2+ and As3+) along with additional leaching analysis of total nitrogen (T-N), phosphate (T-P) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The transformations of calcite during synthesis were confirm by characterization using XRD, SEM-EDAX and FT-IR techniques. In additional, the phosphate leaching potential and adsorbate (nitrate) efficiency in aqueous solution was investigated using the calcinedurine calcite. The results indicate that the calcite was effectively remove heavy metal(loid)s lead up to 96.8%. In addition, the adsorption capacity (qe) of calcite was calculated and it was found to be 203.64 Pb, 110.96 Cd, 96.02 Zn, 104.2 As, 149.54 Cu and 162.68 Ni mg/g, respectively. Hence, we suggest that the calcite obtain from the human urine will be a suitable absorbent for heavy metal(loid)s removal from aqueous solution.

  • This study was carried out to develop the low-priced adsorbent by synthesizing the zeolite of high CEC with the natural zeolite and examining the ability of this zeolite to adsorb heavy metals. The dominant clay minerals were clinoptilolite and mordenite in natural zeolite, while phillipsite in the synthesized zeolite. Adsorption reaction of Cu and Zn on clays were reached to equilibrium after 1 hr. The amount of adsorption was increased as the concentrations of heavy metals or the initial pH of suspension was increased. The synthesized zeolite adsorbed heavy metals about twice as much as the natural zeolite. The adsorption of heavy metals on the synthesized zeolite was less affected by the initial pH of suspension than that on natural zeolite. At cumulative adsorption, the synthesized zeolite adsorbed much more heavy metals at early three treatments than the natural zeolite did. The amount of desorption by chloride salts was increased as the concentration of chloride salts was increased. The ability of salt to desorb was in the order of NaCl>$CaC1_2$>$AlC1_3$. It is estimated that the ability of the synthesized zeolite to remove heavy metals was better than that of the natural zeolite.

  • The typical properties of manganese nodules are its high porosity and high specific surface area and manganese in nodules is existed as ${\delta}$-MnO$_2$. These properties suggest that manganese nodules ran be used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions. This study investigated the practical applicability for the removal of copper ions in the waste water by manganese nodules as an adsorbent using fixed column and fix bed systems. Manganese nodules of 1kg (size 1-3 cm) can absorb 4.0g Cu in fixed column system and 2.3g Cu in fixed bed system from waste water for 3 hours respectively.

  • Carbon-based sorbents such as biochar and activated carbon have been proven to be cost-effective in removing pollutants containing heavy metals from wastewater. The aim of this study was using batch experiment to evaluate the adsorption characteristics of heavy metals in single-metal conditions onto reed biochar for treating wastewater containing heavy metals. The removal rates of heavy metals were in the order of Pb > $Cu{\fallingdotseq}Cd{\fallingdotseq}Zn$, showing the adsorption efficiency of Pb was higher than the other heavy metals. Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherms were used to model the equilibrium adsorption data obtained from adsorption of Pb on reed biochar. For reed biochar, the Langmuir model provided a slightly better fit than the Freundlich model. Lead was observed on the biochar surface after adsorption by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The main functional groups of reed biochar were aromatic carbons. Overall, the results suggested that reed biochar could be useful adsorbent for treating wastewater containing Pb.

  • The adsorption characteristics of Pb(II) and Cu(II) by the manganese oxide-coated activated carbon (MOAC) were investigated by series of batch experiments. MOAC was prepared by three types of manufacturing methods such as chemical precipitation method (CP), hydrothermal method (HT) and supercritical method (SC). Pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models adequately described kinetics and isotherm of Pb(II) and Cu(II) adsorption on the experimented adsorbents. These results indicated that heavy metal ions were chemically adsorbed onto uniform monolayered adsorption sites. The coating of manganese oxide enhanced the adsorption capacities of AC. And adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cu(II) were significantly affected by the manufacturing method of MOAC. The highest adsorption performance was obtained by using SC, followed by HT and CP, which is caused from high uniformity and amount of manganese oxide coated onto AC induced by high temperature and pressure. These results show that MOAC can be used as an effective adsorbent to remediate heavy metal contaminated environment.

  • Simultaneous mobility reduction of explosives and heavy metals in an operational range by monopotassium phosphate (MKP) and bentonite spreading technology was investigated. Potassium ion and phosphate ion in MKP act as explosives sorption enhancer and insoluble heavy metal phosphate formation, respectively, while bentonite acts as the explosives adsorbent. Then, the decrease in surface water concentration of the pollutants and resulting risk reduction for local residents of the operational range, by MKP/bentonite application was estimated. Under untreated scenario, the noncancer hazard index (HI) exceeded unity on February, July and August, mainly due to 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT); however, MKP/bentonite treatment was expected to lower the noncancer hazard index by decreasing the surface water concentration of explosives and heavy metals (especially TNT). For example, on July, estimated surface water concentration and HI of TNT were 0.01 mg/L and 1.1, respectively, meanwhile the sorption coefficient of TNT was 3.9 mg1−nkg−1Ln. However, by MKP/bentonite treatment, the TNT sorption coefficient increased to 113.8 mg1−nkg−1Ln and the surface water concentration and HI decreased to about 0.002 mg/L and 0.2, respectively. Based on the result, it can be concluded that MKP/bentonite spreading is a benign technology that can mitigate the risk posed by the pollutants migration from operational ranges.

  • This study examined the adsorption characteristics of heavy metal ions ($Cr^{6+}$, $As^{3+}$) in an aqueous solution using recycled aggregate (RA) and recycled aggregate (RA)/steel slag (SS) composites. The RA and SS are favorable for the absorbent because it contains about 91% and 86.9%, respectively, which are some of the major adsorbent ingredients (CaO, $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$) for heavy metal. Kinetic equilibrium of $Cr^{6+}$ and $As^{3+}$ in RA and RA/SS composites reached within 180 min and 360 min, respectively. The kinetic data presented that the slow course of adsorption follows the Pseudo first and second order models. The equilibrium data were well fitted by the Freundlich model and showed the affinity order of $As^{3+}$ > $Cr^{6+}$. The results of $As^{3+}$ also showed that the adsorption capacity slightly increased with increasing pH from 6 to 10. Meanwhile, the adsorption capacity of $Cr^{6+}$ was slightly decreased. From these results, it was concluded that the RA and RA/SS composites can be successfully used for removing the heavy metals ($Cr^{6+}$ and $As^{3+}$) from aqueous solutions.

  • The present study set out to investigate the adsorption of Cd(II) ions in an aqueous solution by using Peanut Husk Biochar (PHB). An FT-IR analysis revealed that the PHB contained carboxylic and carbonyl groups, O-H carboxylic acids, and bonded-OH groups, such that it could easily adsorb heavy metals. The adsorption of Cd(II) using PHB proved to be a better fit to the Langmuir isotherm than to the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity was 33.89 mg/g for Cd(II). The negative value of ${\Delta}G^o$ confirm that the process whereby Cd(II) is adsorbed onto PHB is feasible and spontaneous in nature. In addition, the value of ${\Delta}G^o$ increase with the temperature, suggesting that a lower temperature is more favorable to the adsorption process. The negative value of ${\Delta}H^o$ indicates that the adsorption phenomenon is exothermic while the negative value of ${\Delta}S^o$ suggests that the process is enthalpy-driven. As an alternative to commercial activated carbon, PHB could be used as a low-cost and environmentally friendly adsorbent for removing Cd(II) from aqueous solutions.
