  • Roll-to-roll (R2R) hot embossing systems have been developed and are widely used in various industrial domains. These systems press and heat flexible films between a press roll and a back-up roll, as said films pass through the two rolls. In previous studies, a heating roll was used for heating. However, in this study, a hybrid roll for R2R hot embossing is conceptualized and developed. This R2R system can be used for generating fine patterns on large and continuous films. The hybrid roll of our system can cool and heat the films simultaneously, thus affording greater flexibility in process design. Thermal and structural analyses were performed for developing the hybrid roll. In addition, a hybrid roll was designed based on analytical results. Experiments were conducted for measuring the performance of the developed hybrid roll.

  • HVAC&R systems account for more than 50% of the energy consumption of buildings. The purpose of this study is to propose an optimal design method for the HVAC&R system and to examine the possibility for the energy conservation of a selected system. The energy demand for cooling and heating is determined by using TRNSYS and HEET. By an interaction between total system efficiency and cooling-to-heating load ratio, the optimal HVAC&R systems will be decided. The results showed that this proposed method is significantly capable of determining optimal system and building design for saving energy.

  • Scroll compressor has been used extensively for refrigeration since the early 1980's for its improved efficiency, greater reliability, smoother operation, lower noise and vibration. And also, nowadays, the scroll mechanism is used for expander even though in niche market yet. But scroll expander has not been used for high-temperature and high-pressure gas, because the continuous expansion of the gas causes a wide range of temperature distribution over the whole scroll wrap that leads to differential thermal expansion of scroll elements, which results in system vibrations, noise and efficiency losses. For the scroll expander to produce power more efficiently, all of radial and radial clearances between scroll wrap must be the same. In order to reduce differential thermal expansion in addition to improvements in thermal efficiency and specific power, we propose a scroll expander with heating structure. Heat-pipe heating structure is considered as the most effective method to heat the scroll expander at a uniform temperature. This paper includes some results of preliminary study of the scroll expander with heating structure and proposals of their systems for power generation and refrigeration.

  • As office automation appliances and communication equipments are adopted in office buildings, internal heat gains increase gradually. When making simulation model, internal heat gains are usually set up with standard values or ignored. Therefore, the impact of the internal heat gains has been ignored or not been focused although it is recognised as significant contributor to heating/cooling load of buildings. This study focused on the impact of internal heat gains on curtain wall buildings. the amount and schedules of heat internal gains profiles not only affect the profiles of heating/cooling loads, but also make impact on reducing the effectiveness of high performance glazing systems. It is important to identify internal heat gains profiles before considering the installation of high performance glazing systems.

  • Currently, geothermal heat pump systems are being installed in new official and commercial building, welfare facilities, and school but there are a few cases for the housing heat sink in Korea. The reason is that there are no progressive taxes for the household electrical use, no actual output for the application of geothermal technology, high initial investment. For the overall use in multi family apartment such as the Green Home etc, technology development and building of the relevant research team need to be done through preliminary study. Core subjects for overall use include cooling heating load estimation for the multi family apartment, economical efficiency of the geothermal cooling and heating system, design and construction technology of the geothermal cooling and heating system for the multi family apartment, commercialization plan, and state of the art analysis. Selection of the detailed subjects with respect to core subject, driving schedule and commercialization plan, driving system, presentation of the utilization plan.

  • A near infrared (NIR) heating system has advantages over the conventional convection-based systems, in terms of heating uniformity and energy efficiency. When it is over-heated during its operation, the radiation lamp gets blackened, and the life of the radiation module becomes severely limited. The heat transfer system in the module is based on a high operating-temperature, and the radiation makes it difficult to analyze in detail the reliability issue, with an experimental approach alone. We developed a numerical heat-transfer model of the NIR heating system. We applied a ray-tracing method on the radiative heat transport, and a finite volume method on the conductive and convective systems, respectively. The cooling performance of the system is presented, based on the energy and flow distributions in the module. The factors that directly affect the module life are analyzed, such as the surface temperatures of the lamp glass and the reflector, and design improvements are discussed.

  • Weldlines are generated during the injection molding process when two or more melt flows are brought into contact. The weldlines are unavoidable in the cases of presence of holes or inserts, multi-gated delivery systems, significant thickness change, etc. At the welded contact region, a 'V'-shaped notch is formed on the surface of the molded part. This 'V'-notch deteriorates not only surface appearance but also mechanical strength of the molded part. To eliminate or reduce weldlines so as to improve the weldline strength, the mold temperature at the corresponding weld locations should be maintained higher than the glass transition temperature of the resin material. The present study implements high-frequency induction heating in order to rapidly raise mold surface temperature without a significant increase in cycle time. This induction heating enables to local mold heating so as to eliminate or reduce weldlines in an injection-molded plastic part. The effect of induction heating conditions on the weldline strength and surface appearance of an injection-molded part is investigated.

  • In this paper, the ventilating and heating system of T-103 trainer aircraft were investigated and redesigned to improve its poor performance. The ventilation system of the trainer was designed to increase the mass flow rate of fresh air by using air intake valves. The flow-in air through the air intake valve is supplied to the cabin by the ram effect of aircraft and the propeller. And the additional heating system was installed to improve the temperature of the cabin inside. The wasted heat from the exhaust gas of the engines was used as heat source of the additional heating system by installing an heat exchanger around the exhaust nozzle. The additional fresh air and the heated air enter the cabin via two ducts mounted under the instrument panel and behind the pedal in the cabin. The additional ventilating and heating system can be controlled by the first pilot and the secondary pilot individually using the control knob equipped separately. After mounting the additional ventilating and heating system, evaluations such as inspection of parts and component, ground run-up test, in-flight test, user test, etc. were conducted. The result of the tests was sufficient to meet the requirements of the manuals, and the pilots were satisfied with the additionally mounted systems.

  • Purpose: Dual cylindrical microwave chambers equipped with an ohmic heating tube were designed and fabricated to maximize the electric field strength for expeditious heat treatment of particulate foods. Methods: The efficacy of the combination heater was investigated by simulating the electric field distribution by using COMSOL Multiphysics software. Results: All components of the designed microwave heating unit were suitable for transmitting maximal microwave power to the load. The simulated electric field distribution implied that single-mode microwave heating would be sufficient for the steady generation of a highly localized heating zone in the cavity. During impedance matching, the calculated reflection coefficient ($S_{11}$) was small, possibly implying minimal power loss and wave reflection in the designed microwave heating chamber. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the possibility of concentrating the microwave power at the centerline for a single-frequency microwave, for thermal treatment of multiphase foods without attenuating the microwave power.
