  • In Jeju, underground air is used for heating greenhouse and fertilizing natural $CO_2$ gas by suppling directly into greenhouse. But greenhouse heating method by direct supply of underground air has several problems as like low temperature below $20^{\circ}C$ or high relative humidity over 90%. The underground air is inadequate in heating of crops such as mangos, oranges with the growing temperature over $20^{\circ}C$. Also if the relative humidity of greenhouse is kept with over 90%, diseases can strike almost of the crops. And also the ventilation loss becomes larger because the air pressure of inside greenhouse by direct supply of underground air is higher. In this study the heat pump system using underground air as heat source was developed and heating performance of the system was analyzed. Heating COP of the system was 2.5~5.0 and rejecting heat into greenhouse and extracting heat from underground air in this heat pump system were 46.5~31.4 kW, 34.9~20.9 kW respectively.

  • We investigated the impacts of the diabatic heating location, vertical profile and basic state on the Rossby wave propagation. To examine the dynamical process of individual responses on the regional heat source, a dry version of the linear baroclinic model was used with climatological summertime (JJA) mean basic state and vertical structure of the diabatic heating for 1979-2008. Two sets of diabatic heating were constructed of those positioned in the mid-latitudes (Tibetan Plateau, eastern Mediterranean Sea, and the west-central Asia) and the tropics (the southern India, Bay of Bengal, and western Pacific). It was found that using the principal component analysis, atmospheric response to diabatic heating reaches to the steady state in 19th days in time. The prescribed mid-latitude forcing forms equivalent barotropic Rossby wave propagation along the westerly Asia jets, whereas the tropical forcing generates the Rossby wave train extending from the tropics to mid-latitudes. In relation to the maximum vertical profile, the mid-level forcing reveals a stronger response than the lower-level forcing, which may be caused by more effective Rossby wave response by the upper-level divergent flow. Under the different sub-seasonal mean state, both of the tropical and mid-latitude forcing induce the different sub-seasonal response intensity, due to the different basic-state wind.

  • For power electronic devices, the thermal energy density per unit volume has seen a rapid increase in recent years, owing to the miniaturization and dense integration of electronic components, as well as the continuous development in performance and function. This research examined the validity and reliability of a thermal safety model for managing the heating conditions of TRIAC electronic components. Among the electronic components of a PCB, these can be considered as a heat source. Using the model, the heating conditions of TRIAC components were maintained at their design target levels in the process of developing an LMT motor drive board. In addition, the heating characteristics of the entire PCB were analyzed to verify its thermal safety. Finally, the reliability and validity of the thermal safety model for maintaining the heating conditions of the TRIAC electronic elements at adequate levels was verified using a numerical analysis method.

  • This experiment was carried out to study on the effect of greenhouse heating by water-to-water heat pump system employing heating water tank(ground water) as the heat source. Followings are the results obtained from this study ; 1. The heat amount absorbed from evaporator and the heat amount rejected from condenser were approximately 9, 000~ 12, 000kcal/h and 13, 000~ 17, OOOkcal/h, respectively. 2. The heat efficiencies of evaporator and condenser used in this experiment were approximately 79% and 83%, respectively. 3. The maximum heating load estimated for the experimental greenhouse was about 18, 000 ~ 25, OOOkcal/h, which was found to be about 28 ~ 32% higher than the heating capacity of the heat pump system adopted for this experiment. 4. The coefficients of performance(COP) for the heat pump and the total heat pump system were approximately 2.9~3.5 and 1.5~2.4, respectively. 5. The coefficient of performance(COP) calculated from the Mollier Diagram was about 3.2 ~ 3.4, which was reasonably close to the COP estimated on the basis of measured values. 6. The temperature of experimental greenhouse heated by the heat pump system could be maintained about 12~15 。C higher than that of a control greenhouse.

  • The purpose of this study was to quantify the impact of the ventilation rate on heating and cooling energy consumption in a detached house. For it, a series of simulations for the application of the diverse ventilation rate (ACH) were computationally conducted for a prototypical detached residential building in the cold climate (Detroit, Michigan) and hot/humid climate (Miami, Florida) of USA. Analysis revealed that ventilation is a significant heat losing source in the cold climate; thus, the higher ventilation rate significantly increases the heating energy consumption and energy cost in the cold climate; while the impact on energy increase for heating and cooling energy consumption is similar in hot/humid climate with less significancy compared to cold climate. The research outcome of this study could be a fundamental data for determining the optimal ventilation rate in terms of indoor air quality, but also building energy performance well.

  • Recently, induction heating cooker(IH-Cooker) is very interested for high efficiency, the quickness of heating time and the convenient regulation of heating spot. In this paper, we proposed the magneto-thermal analysis of an induction heating cooker(IH-Cooker) as an efficient design, and analyzed the magnetic fold intensity inside the axisymmetric shaped cooker using three-dimensional axisymmetric finite element method(Flux2D) and the effectual heat source was obtained by ohmic losses from eddy currents induced in the cooker. Also, we presented the temperature characteristics of the IH-Cooker according to input frequency and relative permeability in stainless parts and in aluminum parts.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the available potential heat source for heat pump in the district heating supply area in the city. Unused energy potentials were estimated and integrated based on open source based data. In particular, geographical spatial analysis of recoverable heat energy density and heat demand in the heat source area of large retailers and public sauna facilities in the DH network located in the southern part of the metropolitan area (Pyeongtaek-si) was conducted. As a result of the study, the DH network area had a total potential energy of 1,741.7 toe/year for the two heat sources of large retailers and public saunas. It is estimated that 1,006.9 toe/year, which is 57.8% of the total, can be linked to the district heating. The large retailers showed a positive correlation with the floor area and energy use of 0.4937. The recoverable energy intensity was estimated to be $0.0017toe/m^2$ per unit area and $0.0069tCO_2/m^2$ for greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, public saunas were analyzed by comparing the empirical case with the theoretical calculation, and it was estimated that energy conservation estimate of 80% was $0.0315toe/m^2$ per bath area and $0.1183tCO_2/m^2$ for greenhouse gas emissions. The total potential energy amount of this area was positively correlated with the heat demand of apartment house by administrative district, and it was confirmed that it had a relatively high potential energy especially in traffic and commercial center.

  • Micron-sized metal wires are widely used in industries such as filtration, catalyst and composite materials, etc. In the wire drawing process, the die that is used conventionally is an effective and, at the same time, sensitive component. However, a typical array of the dies has caused many problems in the wire drawing process, e.g., large frictional force on the interface between wire and the resulting high heat generation, precise adjustment of the dies, extended cooling system, die abrasion, etc.. Because of these problems, there have been many works that are aiming at improving the efficiency of wire drawing process by analyzing the die geometry and by applying advanced die material to prolong the die life or even at developing a dieless wire drawing system. This paper is dealing with developing a new wire drawing system that is applicable to reduce the wire drawing steps with high draw ratio. The new wire drawing system does not use the dies, but use the self-induced heater that works on the basis of the resonant phenomenon of wire material. The electromagnetic wave is the heating source. The results of the study on the diameter reduction and microwave flow analysis show that the heating effectiveness of the wire is influenced by the energy distribution in the microwave propagation chamber. We can obtain diameter-reduced wires by using microwave in the dieless drawing process. Microwave as a heating source is capable of producing wires without applying dies in wire drawing process.

  • This study investigated the total energy consumption and the energy consumption by type of 31 apartment complexes in Daejeon. The energy is supplied to the apartments from district heating, and can be divided into hot water, electricity, and gas. Hot water is used in for space heating and for domestic hot water (DHW), and electricity is used for plugs, cooling, ventilation, and public utilities (street lights, pumps, elevators, etc.). All gas supplied from district heating is used for cooking. As a result, the consumption unit of each energy source of independent dwelling areas was calculated to be $103.7kWh/m^2{\cdot}a$ ($15,692kWh/H{\cdot}a$) for thermal energy, $48.0kWh/m^2{\cdot}a$ ($4,646kWh/H{\cdot}a$) for electricity, and $10.5kWh/m^2a$ ($1,015kWh/H{\cdot}a$) for gas, so the entire consumption was calculated to be $162.3kWh/m^2{\cdot}a$ ($15,692kWh/H{\cdot}a$).
