The purpose of this study was to investigate the gelatinization properties of potato starch heated with microwave. Two types of potato starches were prepared; In group A raw potato starch was heated with microwave and in group B potato starch was isolated from potato heated with microwave. Both groups were exposed to the microwave energy in a 560W, 2,450 MHz oven for 60, 120, 180 and 300 seconds. Gelatinization behaviour by DSC made a few differences according to the ratio of starch to water. As the microwave heating time took longer, gelatinization temperature and gelatinization $enthalpy({\bigtriangleup}H_1)$ were decreased in and melting $enthalpy({\bigtriangleup}H_2)$ was increased in group A. Whereas they were increased in group B. In both groups, maximum viscosity in gelatinization by Brabender amylogram was decreased by microwave heating. Then the peak of the maximum viscosity was shifted to higher temperature and cold viscosity was slightly increased. In group A, viscosity in gelatinization and light transmittance by NaOH was increased in initial stage and gel volume in gelatinization by KSCN was decreased. On the other hand, in group B, viscosity by alkali was slightly decreased, but light transmittance by NaOH was almost never changed. Gel volume is decreased like group A.
The monitoring system is an absolutely required system for improving a performance to consider the situation for the hybrid generation of the photovoltaic (PV) and wind power (WP) energy experimental research complex. This system is to monitor with the railroad switching point heating system using LabVIEW to the hybrid generation of the PV and WP. The monitoring system of this paper is a program monitoring the hour, day and total of the voltage and current that made from the hybrid generation of PV and WP. In experiment, we acquired the power data according to time at the day of PV and WP. We have confirmed the possibility of the real time monitoring system using LabVIEW with the railroad switching point heating system as the hybrid generation of the PV and WP.
Energy loss from windows accounts for large scores of heating and cooling loads also in energy saving apartments that is reduced over 30% of total energy consumption. Movable reflective insulations, insulation shutters, blinds, insulated shades are used to reduce energy loads from windows. In this study, energy saving performance of insulated shades was simulated by control methods. According to installation of insulated shades, heating loads were decreased about 10.5~11.3%, and cooling loads are decreased about 29.1~38.3% on an energy saving apartment. The heating peak load was reduced about 9.5% by insulated shades and the cooling peak load was reduced about 25.7~31.5%. In the case of insulated shades with automatic control system, simple time schedule control system would be more efficient than outdoor detection control system that should use several sensors.
The evaluation of the indoor environment of the Assembly Hall in the University, which is designed to be a large space, requires efficient design of its heating system that takes into consideration natural convection and the characteristics of the occupant's spaces. Indoor thermal environment was measured in the field and simulated with CFD code. The estimations of temperature distribution and indoor airflow distribution must be carried out simultaneously, as the thermal stratification is induced by natural convection flows. In order to simulate the even distribution of factors affecting the indoor environment, including temperature and airflow, Phoenics is used. The turbulent flow model adopted is the RNG k- model. The inlets and outlets of the air-conditioning systems, material and thermal properties, and the size of the test room ($35m{\times}18m{\times}10m$) are used for the simulation. Since the Assembly Hall is symmetric, half of the space is simulated. A Cartesian grid is used for calculation and the number of grids are respectively $60{\times}45{\times}35$. The results of the computer simulation during winter conditions are compared with the measurements at the typical points in the assembly hall with the heating system. After evaluating the results of the computer simulations, the methods of the heating system and layout are suggested.

Movable reflective insulations, insulation shutters, blinds, insulated shades are used to reduce energy loads from windows. In this study, energy saving performance of insulated shades was simulated by control methods. According to installation of insulated shades, heating loads were decreased about $10.5{\sim}11.3%$, and cooling loads are decreased about $11.0{\sim}15.5%$ on an energy saving apartment. The heating peak load was reduced about 9.5% by insulated shades, but the cooling peak load is hardly ever decreased. Because in the condition of cooling peak load, latent cooling loads accounts for large score of cooling loads. Difference of the energy loads by a schedule control method and an outdoor detection control was no more than 5% for a base model. In the case of insulated shades with automatic control system, simple time schedule control system would be more efficient than outdoor detection control system that should use several sensors.
Magnesium material could be widely used in the automotive industry because of its high strength to weight ratio, but the electric resistance spot welding process of magnesium sheets is difficult because of its low electric resistance and high thermal conduction and thermal expansion. For this reason, an electric resistance surface friction spot welding process using rotating dies is suggested for the spot welding of magnesium metal sheets. This welding method can be characterized by three heating methods: (1) electric resistance heating on contacted surface, (2) surface friction heating by rotating dies, and (3) thermal conduction heating from heated steel electrodes, for the fusion of metal at the interfacial zone between the two magnesium sheets. This welding process also has variables to explore, such as welding currents, diameters of the steel electrode, and rotating dies. It was found that the welding strength could reach industrial requirements by applying a welding current of 11.0kA, with steel electrodes of 12mm diameter, with rotating dies of 4.4 mm diameter, under the condition of a revolution speed of 1200rpm of rotating dies, for the surface friction spot welding process of AZ31 magnesium alloy sheets of 1.4mm thickness.
Purpose: This study compared the effects of forced air warming and radiant heating on body temperature and shivering of patients with postoperative hypothermia. Methods: The quasi-experimental study was conducted with two experimental groups who had surgery under general anesthesia; 20 patients of group 1 experimented with the Bair Hugger as a forced air warming and 20 patients of group 2 experimented with the Radiant heater. The study was performed from July 3 to August 31, 2006 in a recovery room of an university hospital in a city. The effects of the experiment were measured by postoperative body temperature and chilling score at arrival and after every 10 minutes. The data were analyzed by t-test or ${\chi}^2$-test, repeated measures ANCOVA using SPSS/WIN 12.0. Results: The mean body temperature showed differences between the Bair Hugger group and Radiant Heater group at 40 minutes(F=-2.579, p=.034), 50minutes(F=-2.752, p=.027), and 60 minutes(F=-2.470, p=.047) after arrival to the recovery room. So, hypothesis 1 was partially accepted. The mean score of shivering showed differences between the Bair Hugger group and the Radiant Heater group, but it had no significant meaning. Hypothesis 2 was not accepted. Conclusion: We need more study to explore the effects and side effects of heating modalities to select a more effective heat treatment. The efficiency of heat modalities with regards to cost benefit, time consumption, and patients' discomfort such as burns should be considered.
This study aimed at developing and evaluating performance of the two logics for respectively operating two-position- and variable-heating systems. Both logics control the heating system and openings of the double skin facade buildings in an integrated manner. Artificial neural network models were applied for the predictive and adaptive controls in order to optimally condition the indoor thermal environment. Numerical computer simulation methods using the MATLAB (Matrix Laboratory) and TRNSYS (Transient Systems Simulation) were employed for the performance tests of the logics in the test module. Analysis on the test results revealed that the variable control logic provided more comfortable and stable temperature conditions with the increased comfortable period and the decreased standard deviation from the center of the comfortable range. In addition, the amount of heat supply to the indoor space was significantly reduced by the variable control logic. Thus, it can be concluded that the optimal control method using the artificial neural network model can work more effectively when it is applied to the variable heating systems.
This study aimed at developing integrated logic for controlling heating device and openings of the double skin facade buildings. Two major logics were developed-rule-based control logic and artificial neural network based control logic. The rule based logic represented the widely applied conventional method while the artificial neural network based logic meant the optimal method. Applying the optimal method, the predictive and adaptive controls were feasible for supplying the advanced thermal indoor environment. Comparative performance tests were conducted using the numerical computer simulation tools such as MATLAB (Matrix Laboratory) and TRNSYS (Transient Systems Simulation). Analysis on the test results in the test module revealed that the artificial neural network-based control logics provided more comfortable and stable temperature conditions based on the optimal control of the heating device and opening conditions of the double skin facades. However, the amount of heat supply to the indoor space by the optimal method was increased for the better thermal conditioning. The number of on/off moments of the heating device, on the other hand, was significantly reduced. Therefore, the optimal logic is expected to beneficial to create more comfortable thermal environment and to potentially prevent system degradation.
Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of rehydration and subsequent heating at high temperature on the pigments and antioxidants of dried samnamul (Aruncus dioicus) and daraesoon (Actinidia arguta). Methods: Rehydration included 16 h-soaking in cold water, and 30 min-boiling and 1 h-infusion in water. Rehydrated samnamul and daraesoon were heated at $180^{\circ}C$ for 10 or 20 min with or without perilla oil addition (10%) for cooking. Pigments and antioxidants were determined by HPLC and spectrophotometry. Results: Rehydration caused decreases in pigment and polyphenol contents, but increase in tocopherol content. Cooking by heating without addition of perilla oil resulted in increases in chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, but decreases in polyphenol and tocopherol contents. Decrease in tocopherol content by heating at $180^{\circ}C$ was reversed by the addition of perilla oil. Conclusion: This study strongly suggested that cooking of samnamul and daraesoon at $180^{\circ}C$ with perilla oil could improve color, texture, and potential health functionality by recovering the loss of antioxidants and pigments with antioxidant activity.
