TiAl intermetallic compound was candidated for the application to the high temperature materials such as a gas turbine exhaust valve in the automobile. However, this material dose not have ductility allowing to machinability to product. To improve the ductility, many researches conduct alloy design and heat treatment methods. We observed that the microstructure of TiAl varied with Ni, Mn elements as well as a heat treatment condition. In the case of Ni element addition, the TiAlNi intermetallic compound was precipitated at the grain boundary. When the heat treatment temperature increased from $1000^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$, the TiAlNi intermetallic compound was uniformly dispersed on the matrix. In the case of Mn element addition, the mixed duplex structure of ${\gamma}$-TiAl and lamellar(TiAl/$Ti_3Al$) was obtained with $1250^{\circ}C$ and $1300^{\circ}C$ heat treatment for 1 hour. When the heat treatment temperature increased from $1250^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$, the lamellar domain of the duplex structure was transformed near-lamellar structure.
Ti and Ti alloys are used in the automobile and aerospace industries due to their high specific strength and excellent corrosion resistance. However their application is limited due to poor formability at room temperature and high unit cost. In order to overcome these issues, dissimilarly jointed materials, such as cladding materials, are widely investigated to utilize them in each industrial field because of an enhanced plasticity and relatively low cost. Among various dissimilar bonding processes, the rolled cladding process is widely used in Ti alloys, but has a disadvantage of low bonding strength. Although this problem can be solved through post-heat treatment, the mechanical properties at the bonded interface are deteriorated due to residual stress generated during post-heat treatment. Therefore, in this study, the microstructure change and residual stress trends at the interfaces of Ti/Al cladding materials were studied with increasing post-heat treatment temperature. As a result, compared to the as-rolled specimens, no difference in microstructure was observed in the specimens after postheat treatment at 300, 400, and 500℃. However, a new intermetallic compound layer was formed between Ti and Al when post-heat treatment was performed at a temperature of 600℃ or higher. Then, it was also confirmed that compressive residual stress with a large deviation was formed in Ti due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficient and modulus of elasticity between Ti Grade II and Al 1050.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties in 90% hot forged Incoloy 825 alloy. With increasing solution treatment temperature, the grain size increased and the volume fraction of total precipitates decreased, and the precipitates disappeared at $1,000^{\circ}C$. With increasing aging time at $700^{\circ}C$, the volume fraction of precipitate increased and the precipitates size increased. Most of the precipitates consist $Cr_{23}C_6$ carbide, and a small amount of TiC carbide was also observed. With decreasing solution treatment temperature and increasing aging time, tensile strength and hardness increased, and the elongation and impact value decreased. With increasing aging time, the impact value decreased sharply by the increased of the precipitate size.
In recent years, TRIP steels which are composed of ferrite, bainite, and retained austenite have drawn much attention for automotive sheets due to excellent combination of strength and ductility. The effect of two-step isothermal heat treatment of bainitic transformation on microstructures, especially retained austenites and tensile properties in the conventional TRIP steel was investigated. A two-step isothermal heat treatment, in which 50% bainitic transformation occurred at high temperature, followed by bainitic transformation at low temperature, improves tensile properties, resulting from enhanced mechanical stability of retained austenite against external plastic deformation due to refinement of retained austenites, compared to single-step isothermal heat treatment.
The Si5AION7 specimens containing 20% YAG composition have been sintered and then heat treated to induce the crystallization of the matrix glassy phase. Crystallization of YAG phase during the heat treatment was detected from the X-ray diffraction patterns and the consequent changes in room temperature toughness as well as in microstructures were investigated. Almost all the glassy boundary phase were found to crystallize even after 5 minutes of heat treatment and the KC at room temperature decreased accordingly. The results show that the matrix crystallization can be induced by slow cooling from the sintering temperature.
The effects of the heat-treatment temperature on the carbon (C) substitution amount, full width at half maximum (FWHM) value, critical temperature ($T_c$), critical current density ($J_c$) have been investigated for 10 wt % malic acid ($C_4H_6O_5$)-doped $MgB_2/Fe$ wires. All the samples were fabricated by the in-situ powder-in-tube (PIT) method and heat-treated within a temperature range of $650^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$. As the heat-treatment temperature increased, it seemed that the lattice distortion was increased by a more active C substitution into the boron sites from the malic acid addition. These increased electron scattering defects seemed to enhance the $J_c-H$ properties in spite of an improvement in the crystallinity, such as a decrease of the FWHM value and an increase of the $T_c$. Compared to the un-doped wire heat-treated at $650^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, the $J_c$ was enhanced by the C doping in a high-field regime. The wire heat-treated at $900^{\circ}C$ resulted in a higher magnetic $J_c$ of approximately $10^4\;A/cm^2$ at 5 K and 8 T.
Magnetic materials in relay have been found to change in their magnetic characteristics with heat treatment. This paper describes how the magnetic characteristics of Magnetic Iron are affected by heat treatment. The materials are pot annealed and cooled from high temperature in the pot, by exposing in the atmospheres, and by quenching in the water and oil. It also studies the best heating temperature and cooling method which improve the magnetic characteristics of the Magnetic Iron.
To investigate new applications for illite as an additive for carbon-based composites, the composites were prepared with and without illite at different heat-treatment temperatures. The effects of the heat-treatment temperature on the chemical structure, microstructure, and thermal oxidation properties of the resulting composites were studied. As the heat-treatment temperature was increased, silicon carbide SiC formation via carbothermal reduction increased until all the added illite was consumed in the case of the samples heat-treated at $2,300^{\circ}C$. This is attributed to the intimate contact between the $SiO_2$ in the illite and the phenol carbon precursor or the carbon fibers of the preform. Among composites prepared at all temperatures, those with illite addition exhibited fewer pores, voids, and interfacial cracks, resulting in larger bulk densities and lower porosities. A delay of oxidation was not observed in the illite-containing composites prepared at $2,300^{\circ}C$, suggesting that the illite itself absorbed energy for exfoliation or other physical changes. Therefore, if the illite-containing C/C composites can reach a density generally comparable to that of other C/C composites, illite may find application as a filler for C/C composites. However, in this study, the illite-containing C/C composites exhibited low density, even when prepared at a high heat-treatment temperature of $2300^{\circ}C$, although the thermal oxidation of the resulting composites was improved.
The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of solution-treatment temperature on the microstructure and damping capacity of a martensitic Fe-7%Ni-0.4%C alloy. The size of lath increased from $0.3{\mu}m$ to $0.55{\mu}m$ with increasing the solution-treatment temperature from 700 to $1100^{\circ}C$. In addition, the size of block, packet, and austenite grain had tendency to increase with increasing solution-treatment temperature. The damping capacity of the Fe-7%Ni-0.4%C martensitic alloy decreased with increasing the solution treatment temperature. The reason is not attributed to the increase in the size of lath, block, packet, and austenite grain, but to the increase in vacancy concentration which hinders dislocation motion.
The effects of alloying elements and the conditions of reverse transformation studied treatment on the formation of retained austenite in 0.15C-6%Mn-(Ti, Nb) steels has been studied. The addition of Ti and Nb to 0.15C-6%Mn steel shows no effect on the formation of retained austenite. In case of reverse transformation treatment at various temperatures, the shape of retained austenite was lath type, growing toward the longitudinal and thickness direction with increasing the heat treatment temperatures. The retained austenite formed by the reverse transformation treatment at higher temperature has a lot of stacking faults induced by the internal stress. The retained austenite was stabilized chemically by enrichment of C and Mn in the vicinity of a untransformed austenite and the chemical stability of retained austenite was decreased with increasing the heat treatment temperature and the holding time. It was effective to heat treat at $650^{\circ}C$ in order to obtain over 30vol.% of retained austenite, but more desirable to heat treat at $625^{\circ}C$ for a long time, considering the amount and quality of retained austenite.
