  • The flex plate, an automotive part which mounts to the automotive engine to transfer torque to transmission, should have considerable hardness and shape accuracy. As a way to produce the flex plate, the hot press forming technology which takes advantages of high formability at elevated temperature, enhanced strength and shape stability was introduced. Therefore, as one of major process parameters the heat treatment condition should be determined to obtain appropriate hardness in the range of manufacturer's specifications. In this study, two heat treatments, austempering and quenching and tempering (QT), were compared as feasible conditions fur the hot press forming of high-carbon tool steel and the hardness and toughness after heat treatments were evaluated. The study showed that both heat treatments resulted in improved hardness but only quenching and tempering showed practicable range of toughness.

  • Non-alloyed and 1.0%Ni alloyed ductile cast iron were cast into the sand mold and metal mold, and finer graphite size was obtained in case of metal mold casting. Direct tempering after casting showed the slight increase of absorbed energy, which is largely due to the relieving of residual stress that is developed during casting. After austempering heat treatment, higher impact energy was obtained in case of metal mold casting than sand mold casting, which is due to the finer graphite size.

  • Influence of Si contents on the mechanical properties and microstructure of austempered ductile iron was investigated. Four different Si contents between 2.0 and 2.9% were used. Austenitizing was performed at $890^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs and austempering temperatures were both 340 and $380^{\circ}C$ for 0.5, 1, and 2 hrs. Nodule content was more than $300/mm^2$ and nodularity was more than 90%. Microstructure was revealed using nital and retained austenite was measured by x-ray diffractometer. Tensile test, no-notch Charpy impact test and wear test were performed. Tensile strength was improved as Si content increased and both elongation and impact toughness had peak at 2.6%Si. The specimen austempered at $380^{\circ}C$ showed lower tensile strength than that of $340^{\circ}C$, but showed higher elongation. However, austempering temperature of $380^{\circ}C$ was desirable because that of $340^{\circ}C$ was close to lower bainite transformation. As austempering time increased, tensile strength and elongation were improved and optimum condition was obtained for 2 hrs heat treatment.

  • A series of investigations for Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) castings were carried out by using the specimens with various chemical compositions and heat treatment conditions. The rolling wear characteristics of alloyed austempered ductile irons under an unlubricated dry rolling condition was evaluated by the Amsler type test with 9.09% sliding ratio. Generally, the wear amount was increased with the austempering temperature and decreased when the hardness of the matrix was higher. The alloying elements also influenced the austempering reaction, the microstructure and the mechanical properties. In this study, the mechanical properties (i.e.) ultimate tensile strength (UTS), hardness, elongation) and the wear resistance are analysed to show the relationship between the alloying elements and the austempering temperatures. Mo, Cu and Ni are alloyed individually or in combination. It has been found that when Cu and Ni alloyed individually to a casting, the wear amount is increased than others with elements alloyed in combination. The amount of rolling wear loss was decreased when Mo was alloyed in cast iron, individually or in combination.

  • A study was investgated the relationship between fracture characteristics and microstructure changes according to Cu addition and heat treatment methods on the ductile cast iron. According to increment of Cu addition pearlite volume fraction was increased due to the deffect of anti-ferritizing of Cu. At the case of austempering heat treatment, fracture toughness of Cu contained specimen was decreased. The reason for the results seems to be responsible for decrement of plastic zone size at the crack tip. It was observed that the excellent fracture toughness can be obtained at the condition of normalizing and the specimen was not contained Cu. Under the such conditions, fractographs is composed of dimple pattern and fracture toughness 71.6MPa $\sqrt{m}$, tensile strength determined as the value of 961.6MPa, respectively.

  • In this study, we investigated effect of Mo addition on mechanical properties of Cu added ADI. Ductile cast iron specimens were austenitized at $900^{\circ}C$ for 150 min and then austempered at $380^{\circ}C$ for the various time periods from 15 min to 480 min. Mo added ADI had a higher volume fraction of retained austenite, and the volume fraction of retained austenite was determined by XRD analysis. As decreasing volume fraction of retained austenite, the elongation was also decreased as expected. But the UTS and yield strength were not decreased.

  • The variation of the mechanical properties, microstructures and the formation of retained austenite with heat treatment conditions in austempered ductile cast iron has been investigated. In the case of austempered ductile cast iron below 25mm diameter, it has been found that a pearlite structure are not obtained under a super cooled condition at range of $0.05^{\circ}C/sec{\sim}10^{\circ}C/sec$, and the matrix is precipitated in graphite, bainite and retained austenite. After austempering treatment the retained austenite is increased with decreasing cooling rate. The elongation increases with decreasing super cooling rate, and the optimum result has been shown to be the elongation of 15.6% at super cooling rate of $0.05^{\circ}C/sec$. The optimum result has been shown to be the tensile strength-elongation balance of $1656kgf/mm^2.%$ and it is more than doubled to as the casting state and continuous cooling condition.

  • Ductile cast iron has a good ductility and ductility and toughness than those of gray cast iron, because the shape of graphite is spheroidal. It has been reported that the strengthening and toughening of the ductile cast iron was resulted from the good modification of various matrix structures obtained by the heat treatment or addition of alloying elements. This study aims to investigate the effect of various special heat treatment(Cyclic Heat Treatment, Intermediate Heat Treatment, Step Quenching), austempering and alloying element(Ni) on the strength and toughness of ductile cast iron. The results obtained from this study are summarized as follows. 1) With addition of Ni, the amount of pearlite or bainite were increased and the morphologies of pearlite or bainite became finer by special heat treatments. 2) As the Ni added and not added ductile cast iron were treated by austenitizing at $900^{\circ}C$ and $840^{\circ}C$, in the latter the austenite was mostly formed in the vicinity of eutectic cell boundary, but in the former on the whole matrix. 3) In cyclic heat treatment, the volume fraction of pearlite was increased and the shape of pearlite was fined with increase of the number of cycle. 4) The shape of pearlite was mostly bar type in the intermediate heat treatment, but spheroidal type in step quenching. 5) The mechanical properties of ductile cast iron containing 1.5%Ni austempered at $400^{\circ}C$ for 25min. after austenitizing at $900^{\circ}C$ for 15min. were a good value of hardness 105(HRB), impact energy 12.5(kg.m), tensile strength 112($kg/mm^2$) and elongation 6.8(%).

  • Grey iron containing a small amount of Cu and Mo to improve the effect of heat treatment and microstructures were poured in to the mold and them austenized at $900^{\circ}C$. After austenitizing the specimens of castings were austempered $210^{\circ}C$, $250^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$ and $350^{\circ}C$. The effects of matrix structures, mechanical properties and wear characteristics were investigated by austempering temperatures. Tensile strength and hardness of austempered grey iron are increased and the amount of retained austenite is decreased as austempering temperature is lower even though the amount of retained autenite in it only 4%. The amount of rolling wear loss are increased as rolling revolution is increased and wear loss of austempered grey iron under dry rolling condition is characterized by three models; initial wear, stationary wear and abnormal wear. It has been found that the amount of wear loss was increased with increasing maxium compressive stress and rolling revolution.

  • The variation of the mechanical properties and the formation of retained austenite with heat treatment conditions in austempered Si bearing carbon steels has been investigated. In the case of a steel containing 0.35C-1.48Si-0.95Mn, it has been found that a feather shape bainite structure of lath are obtained under a isothermal treated condition at just below the Ms temperature, and the martensite, bainitic ferrite and retained austenite of second phase particles on the ferrite matrix for a isothermal treated steels after intercritical annealing are precipitated in a linked shape. The retained austenite with $2{\mu}m$ size induced as TRIP is found to increase with increasing the formation rate of retained austenite for the intercritical annealing and high Si containing steels. The tensile strength is increased as austempering temperature increases in all isothermal treatment temperature, whereas the elongation is shown to roughly decrease as the tensile strength increases. The values of tensile strength-elongation balance have showed a marked dependence upon the elongation rather than the tensile stregth, and their values are increased for high Si containing steels and intercritical annealing condition. The most optimum result has been shown to be the tensile stregth-elongation balance of $2882.4kgf/mm^2.%$ and the elongation of 33.3% for a "B" steel in the heat treating temperature range of $780{\sim}370^{\circ}C$.
