The planarization of rough polycrystalline diamond films synthesized by DC arc discharge plasma jet CVD (chemical vapor deposition) was attempted using KrF excimer laser pulses. The effects of laser incidence angle and reaction gases (ozone and oxygen) on etching rate of diamond were studied. The temperature change of diamond and graphite with different laser fluences was calculated by computer simulation to explain the etching behavior of diamond films. The threshold energy density from the experiment for etching of pure crystalline diamond was about $1.7J/cm^2$ and fairly matched the simulation value. Preferential etching of a particular crystallographic plane was observed through scanning electron microscopy. The etching rate of diamond with ozone was lower than that with oxygen. When the angle of incidence was $80^{\circ}$ to the diamond surface normal, the peak-to-valley surface roughness was Significantly reduced from $20{\mu}m$ to $0.5{\mu}m$.
Residual stresses are introduced in aluminum cylinder head during quenching at the end of the T6 heat treatment process. Tensile residual stress resulted from quenching is detrimental to fatigue behavior of a cylinder head when it is overlapped with stresses of engine operation load. Quenching simulation has been performed to assess the distribution of residual stress in the cylinder head. Analysis revealed that in-homogeneous temperature distribution led to high tensile residual stress at the foot of the long intake port, where high stresses of engine operation load are expected. Measurements of residual stress have been followed and compared with the calculated results. Results successfully proved that high tensile residual stress, which was large enough to accelerate fatigue failure of the cylinder head, are formed during quenching process at the end of heat treatment at the same critical position. Effect of quenching parameters on the distribution of residual stress in cylinder head has been investigated by choosing different combination of heat treatment parameters. It was demonstrated that changes of quenching parameters led to more homogeneous temperature distribution during cooling and could reduce tensile residual stress at the critical region of the cylinder head used in this study.
This paper investigates the change of mechanical properties and thermal shrinkage in commercial multi-filament PET(polyethylene terephthalate) , namely, regular yarn, POY, DTY and composite yarn. To determine changing the effects of processing steps, these were examined at three steps process simulation conditions. The first step is sizing simulation$(S-1\;step\;:\;130^\circ{C}\times2\;min$., hot air treatment under 0.1 gf/d load), the second step is scouring simulation$(S-2\;step\;:\;100^\circ{C}\times20\;min$., boiling water treatment under free tension)and final step is setting simulation$(S-3\;step\;:\;180^\circ{C}\times2\;min$., hot air treatment under free tension). Regular yarn in multi-step treatment showed higher shrinkage at S-3 step and DTY showed higher in at S-1 step. While POY was relaxed at S-1 step, composite yarn showed different shrinkage properties depending on composite yarn type. Mechanical properties showed good relationship with shrinkage : high shrinkage makes initial modulus decrease and bleating strain increase. It also makes decreasing yield strain and yield stress decrease.

A circularly rotated array for a dual polarized applicator in a superficial hyperthermia system is proposed. The applicator has a wider effective treatment area due to the $180^{\circ}$ phase shift. The dual polarized circularly rotated array (DPCRA) suppresses overheating at the center of the array and helps evenly distribute the heat. This array provides a more effective treatment area than a lattice array when a $2{\times}2$ dual polarized array is fitted to the treatment area. The treatment area is 71.5% of the aperture, whereas the effective treatment areas of the $2{\times}2$ dual polarized lattice array (DPLA) and the single polarized array (SPA) are 57.2% and 38.6% of the same aperture, respectively. The measurement matches the simulation results without blood circulation effects. In a $2{\times}2$ array applicator, the proposed DPCRA has more heat uniformity than the DLA and the SPA.

This paper investigates the effects of inlet turbulence conditions and near-wall treatment methods on the heat transfer prediction of gas turbine vanes within the range of engine relevant turbulence conditions. The two near-wall treatment methods, the wall-function and low-Reynolds number method, were combined with the SST and ${\omega}RSM$ turbulence model. Additionally, the RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$, SSG RSM, and $SST_+{\gamma}-Re_{\theta}$ transition model were adopted for the purpose of comparison. All computations were conducted using a commercial CFD code, CFX, considering a three-dimensional, steady, compressible flow. The conjugate heat transfer method was applied to all simulation cases with internally cooled NASA turbine vanes. The CFD results at mid-span were compared with the measured data under different inlet turbulence conditions. In the SST solutions, on the pressure side, both the wall-function and low-Reynolds number method exhibited a reasonable agreement with the measured data. On the suction side, however, both wall-function and low-Reynolds number method failed to predict the variations of heat transfer coefficient and temperature caused by boundary layer flow transition. In the ${\omega}RSM$ results, the wall-function showed reasonable predictions for both the heat transfer coefficient and temperature variations including flow transition onset on suction side, but, low-Reynolds methods did not properly capture the variation of the heat transfer coefficient. The $SST_+{\gamma}-Re_{\theta}$ transition model showed variation of the heat transfer coefficient on the transition regions, but did not capture the proper transition onset location, and was found to be much more sensitive to the inlet turbulence length scale. Overall, the Reynolds stress model and wall function configuration showed the reasonable predictions in presented cases.

In shipyards hull forming is performed by the line heating method using a gas torch and by cold treatment using a roll-press. However, this forming process has some issues, such as difficulties in controlling and accurately estimating the amount of the heat input, as well as a harsh working environment due to exposure to loud noises and air pollution. The induction heating method, which is introduced in this paper, exhibits good control and allows for the estimation of precise heat input. Also, workers can carry out the induction heating in a comfortable working environment. In this research, the induction heating simulation, which consists of electro-magnetic, heat transfer and thermal elasto-plastic analysis, was developed and modified through induction heating experiments. Finally, the effective heating coil was designed for the automatic hull forming system based on the results of induction heating simulation. For the purposes of a future study, if an algorithm to obtain optimal working conditions is developed, automatic systems for hull forming can then be constructed.

The expiration date of high energetic materials(HEM), such as HMX, RDX, TNT, is important. If the expiration date is violated, the expected specification of HEM would not be satisfied which may cause a different conclusion in an urgent situation. As a result, this HEM should maintain fresh conditions which cause the accumulation of waste HEM. If HEM is landfilled during demilitarization, the impact on living organizations is serious. Additionally, landfilling HEM has a possibility of explosion. In this research, the process flow diagram of the demilitarization gas treatment process was simulated while satisfying the law of the environment in Korea. After validation of simulation, it was optimized thermodynamically using Heat Exchanger Network Synthesis(HENs). This study is expected to enhance the energy efficiency of the original facility by suggesting developed designs. This research was supported by Agency of Defense Development NE32 Korea. The purpose of this paper is to define criteria to be used as part of the engineering design for an oil sands plant equipped with the steam assisted gravity drainage process. In this effort, the oil treatment process of an oil sands plant on a pilot scale was focused for detailed investigation. The thermodynamic properties of the process fluid, which is mainly composed of bitumen and water, were estimated with the CPA model. The commercial tool aspen HYSYS was used for the analysis throughout this work along with the provided input data and some necessary assumptions. From the simulation results, the heat and mass balances for a 300 BPD plant were established in order to define standard data for its modular design. In particular, the basis of design for equipment size, heat transfer areas, capital cost and operation cost was extensively discussed.
Heat treatment is an important step for tool manufacture, but unavoidably generates dimensional distortion. This study investigated the continuous dimensional change and the anisotropic behavior of STD11 tool steel during austenitizing and tempering heat treatment especially using quenching dilatometer. Dilatometric results represented that the dimensional change along longitudinal direction was larger than that along transverse direction. Anisotropic phase transformation strain was produced in forged STD11 tool steel during heat treatment. Anisotropic dimensional change increased with increasing austenitizing temperature. After tempering, anisotropic distortion was partially reduced. FactSage thermodynamic equilibrium phase simulation and microstructural observation (FE-SEM, TEM) showed that large ($7{\sim}80{\mu}m$) elongated $M_7C_3$ carbides could be formed along rolling direction. The resolution of elongated carbides during austenitizing was found to be related with the change of martensite transformation temperature after heat treatment. Anisotropic size change of STD11 tool steel was mainly attributed to large elongated carbides produced during rolling process. Using dilatometric and metallographic examination, the possible mechanism of the anisotropic size change was also discussed.

We investigate the mechanical behavior of a pre-heat treated steel of ESW95, which is being used for automotive parts including tie-rods to save manufacturing cost and enhance product quality. SCM435 is also investigated to reveal the characteristics of the pre-heat treated steel tested. AFDEX/MAT is used to extract the true stress-strain curve over the large strain with higher accuracy. It has been found that ESW95 has very week strain-hardening behavior which can be negligible compared with SCM435 and that the initial yield strength is quite high and the toughness of ESW95 reaches nearly 75% of SCM435. ESW95 is characterized by the weak strain-hardening behavior and high yield strength that can be lead to minimization of post-processing including heat treatment and straightening. ESW95 and SCM435 are also compared by applying them to ball-stud forging by computer simulation. It is expected that a great deal of change may take place in production as well as in service if the pre-heated steels are adopted.
