  • Because ships and offshore structures have very large dimensions and complicated shapes, it is difficult to determine the deformation or internal stress in the structure by simple lab tests. Thus, a rigorous analysis by using the computer simulation technology is essential for obtaining their distortions by considering the entire production process characteristics. The rapid development of computer technology made it possible to analyze the heat transfer phenomena, deformation and phase transformation in the welded joint. For large shell structures, shell elements modeling contributed primarily to this development. But if a welding is done by multi-pass, shell elements whose thickness are unchangeable can hard to describe the local situation. Recently, it was researched how to introduce the imaginary temperature for V grooved multi-layer butt welding in strain-boundary method (a kind of shrinkage methodologies). In the present study, we formulated the imaginary temperature for the double bevel and double V groove by considering the thickness change of each pass through the bead and the thickness directions simultaneously and also demonstrated the feasibility of the formula by applying it to the thermal distortion analysis of the erection process of crane pedestal.

  • An integral crank driven Stirling cryocooler is solidly based on concepts of direct IR detector mounting on the cryocooler's cold finger, and the integral construction of the cryocooler and Dewar envelope. Performance factors of the cryocooler depend on operating conditions of the cryocooler such as a cyclic mean pressure of the working fluid, a rotational speed of driving mechanism, a thermal environment, a targeted operation temperature and etc.. At given charging condition of helium gas, the cyclic mean pressure of helium gas in the cryocooler changes with temperatures of the cold end and the environment. In this study, effects of the cyclic mean pressure of helium gas on performances of the Stirling cryocooler were investigated by numerical analyses using the Sage software. The simulation model takes into account thermodynamic losses due to an inefficiency of regenerator, a pressure drop, a shuttle heat transfer and solid conductions. Simulations are performed for the performance variation according to the cyclic mean pressure induced by the temperature of the cold end and the environment. This paper presents P-V works in the compression and expansion space, cooling capacity, contribution of losses in the expansion space.

  • Recently, UV pulse laser is widely used in micro machining of the research, development and industry field of IT, NT and BT products because the laser short wavelength provides not only micro drilling, micro cutting and micro grooving which has a very fine line width, but also high absorption coefficient which allows a lot of type of materials to be machined more easily. To analyze the dynamic deformation during a very short processing time, which is nearly about several tens nanoseconds, the commercial Finite Element Analysis (FEA) code, LS-DYNA 3D, was employed for the computitional simulation of the UV laser micro machining behavior for thin copper material in this paper. A finite element model considering high strain rate effect is especially suggested to investigate the micro phenomena which are only dominated by mechanically pressure impact in disregard of thermally heat transfer. From these computational results, some of dynamic deformation behaviors such as dent deformation shapes, strains and stresses distributions were observed and compared with previous experimental works. These will help us to understand micro interaction between UV laser beam and material.

  • Premixed combustion within porous ceramic media is numerically studied to understand burning characteristics and to find best configurations for burner implementations. Among many parameters, critical to burner performance, flame location and extinction coefficient are selected as major parameters for this study. The flame structure and burner performance with respect to these two parameters are observed. In the study, it is found that the location of flame is the most important in porous burner operation since it affects the rate of heat transfer and flame structure. Stability of the flame within the porous ceramic burner is discussed with respect to the flame location. It is found that to obtain high radiative output, the flame should be located downstream section of the burner. But the flame is to be unstable at most of downstream section except near the exit plane. To overcome this problem, new porous ceramic burner, using different ceramic properties in one burner instead of single property ceramic, is made and tested. With a combination of ceramics of high extinction coefficient at upstream and another material of low extinction coefficient at downstream of the burner, the flame can be stabilized at wider region of the burner with higher radiative output compared to the original burner configuration.

  • For the target goal of Zero-energy House construction in 2025, the government announced that the insulation regulations will be continuously enhanced. It has been predicted that high-performance insulation materials, such as vacuum insulation panel (VIP), should be used to decrease the thickness of outer walls. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of adhesively fixed external insulation and finish system (EIFS) with VIP. The energy performance of a base model with conventional internal insulation system and three alternatives of EIFS with VIP were analyzed by three-dimensional heat transfer simulation. Construction cost and convenience of each alternative were also evaluated and compared. As results, effective alternatives in terms of each performance as well as overall performance considering the weighting factors of each performance were suggested.

  • Energy and environmental concerns accelerate the interest in passive solar heating in buildings, which utilizes solar energy through natural heat transfer. Moreover concerns about environmentally friendly materials were also increased. This study aims to evaluate the thermal performance of a Trombe wall built with earth. The thermal performance of the Trombe walls was analysed with results from computer simulations with TRNSYS 15. The thermal performance of the three types of Trombe wall was compared.: concrete. rammed earth. adobe. It was found that Trombe wall with the thermal storage wall of earth performed better than that of concrete. Rammed earth and adobe Trombe walls gained 4.7% and 12.8% more solar energy. respectively. than the concrete Trombe wall. In earth-applied Trombe walls. the energy gain by natural convection released from the airspace was about 75% of the total solar gains. that took 15% more than concrete Trombe wall. Rammed earth and adobe Trombe walls seem to be more suitable for buildings that use mostly in daytime. such as school, office and so on.

  • This study analyzed the performance of passive solar system for office building. A unit model of the passive solar system was proposed in order to predict its performance under varying parameters and Seoul weather date. Steady state heat transfer equations were set up using a energy balanced equations and solved using a inverse matrix method. Numerical simulation program to analyze system was developed by using MATLAB. As the results, the passive solar system performance of office building was determined by the insolation and the outdoor air temperature. Also the passive solar system indicate 6.7~16.2% of annual average efficiency. In the comparison with other systems of the conventional wall, mass wall could reduce the heating loads of 7.1% and trombe wall could reduce heating loads of 11.5%. Through this study, performance of passive solar system for office building was verified by numerical method. Consequently, the passive solar system could operate an important role as the alternative for saving energy consumption of office building, and the additional studies should be made through the experimental method for the commercialization.

  • Water mist fire suppression systems which use relatively small droplets of water with high injection pressure are increasingly being used in wider applications because of its greater efficiency, low flooding damage and low toxicity. However, the performance of the system significantly relies on the water mist characteristics and it requires better understanding of fire suppression mechanism of water mist. In the present study, computational fluid dynamics simulations were carried out to investigate cooling performance of water mist in heated chamber. The gas phase was prepared with natural convection heat transfer model for incompressible ideal case and then the effects of water mist injection characteristics on cooling capabilities were investigated upon the basis of the pre-determined temperature field. For the simulation of water mist behavior, Lagrangian discrete phase model was employed by using a commercial code, FLUENT. Smaller droplet sizes, greater injection angles and higher flow rates provided relatively higher cooling performance.

  • Flexible forming technology has advantages in sheet metal forming, because it can be implemented to produce various shaped molds using a single apparatus. Due to this advantage, it is possible to apply it to the manufacture of an aircraft winglet mold. Presently, most aircraft winglets are manufactured from composite materials. Therefore, the mold for the curing process is an essential element in the fabrication of such composite materials. Compared to conventional mold forming, flexible forming has some advantages such as reduced manufacturing cost and uniformity of mold thickness. If the thickness of the mold is consistent, then the heat transfer will occur uniformly during the curing process leading to improved formability of the composite material. In the current study, numerical simulations were performed to investigate the possibility of flexible forming for manufacturing of the winglet mold. In order to match the size of the actual product, the shape of objective surface was divided to fit the dimensions of the apparatus. The results from the numerical simulations are compared with the objective surface to verify the accuracy. In conclusion, the current study confirms the feasibility and the potential to manufacture winglet molds by flexible forming.

  • A multiphase CFD analysis is performed to investigate the effect of near-wall grid for simulating a subcooled boiling flow in vertical tube. The multiphase flow model used in this CFD analysis is the two-fluid model in which liquid(water) and vapor(steam) are considered as continuous and dispersed fluids, respectively. A wall boiling model is also used to simulate the subcooled boiling heat transfer at the heated wall boundary. The diameter and heated length of tube are 0.0154 m and 2 m, respectively. The system pressure in tube is 4.5 MPa and the inlet subcooling is 60 K. The near-wall grid size in the non-dimensional wall unit ($y_{w}^{+}$) was examined from 64 to 172 at the outlet boundary. The CFD calculations predicted the void distributions as well as the liquid and wall temperatures in tube. The predicted axial variations of the void fraction and the wall temperature are compared with the measured ones. The CFD prediction of the wall temperature is shown to slightly depend on the near-wall grid size but the axial void prediction has somewhat large dependency. The CFD prediction was found to show a better agreement with the measured one for the large near-wall grid, e.g., $y_{w}^{+}$ > 100.
